Wonders of the moon with Dara O Briain

Is anyone else captivated by this series? I was watching tonight's episode on Channel 5 and one thing particularly intrigued me. After a discussion on how the impact of the moon on tides probably led to the evolution of quadrupeds (animal's with four limbs, if you weren't paying attention!), it then discussed if the moon had any impact on the menstruation cycle. The expert's view was that it didn't, or that no studies had shown this to be the case. I somehow think intuitively that it does. As menstruation cycles align more or less with the cycles of the moon and the impact that it probably had on the development of limbs it must have an impact on the smaller issue of menstruation? I'd be interested to know if anyone else wondered about this, or any comments on the fascinating series in general.

I didn’t see the prog but always struggle to imagine how the moon moves round the earth, the earth rotates on its axis and the earth circles the sun .

Tatami · 02/08/2023 10:34

Me too! And apparently the moon is moving away from the earth at the same rate that our fingernails grow. Once, when it was much closer to earth, the tidal forces would have been extreme. Think top of the cliff height high tides. Amazing!

Recorded it, sounds even more interesting now!

It’s on now.

Just saw the last one. The ending about staying on the moon permanently and using it as a launch site to other places...it's really amazing but I just think, like humans always do, we'll ruin it like we have the coral reefs and ice caps etc. Will it become a space 'car park', a dumping ground? A place to pass through and lose all it's own magic?
I don't know why I feel so uncomfortable with it.

I saw it and was surprised that they said they moon had no affect on mensuration. It certainly did for me. I used to check the calendar to see when the full moons were and then to be prepared for bleeding.

I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking this. The moon has to have some bearing on it, doesn't it? It was dismissed as a coincidence on the programme. Have there really been no studies that prove or suggest a link? I would have even taken a theory or two as a crumb for my curiosity.

Anyway, Dara, my theory is this. Hunter gatherer societies would have used the full moon as the best time for hunting. For hunters relying on excellent vision, they could see their prey better at night. Women were less likely to go on hunt and would gather together. They would then experience the phenomenon of going in sync with ovulation. A couple of weeks after the hunters came back with the glorious meat, women would ovulate together being well fed and fertile. It is a total guess and full of assumptions, I realise. If anyone has any better ideas please share them. I can't shake off pondering on this one!

I reckon the moon does have an impact on menstrual cycles.
But either no-one has bothered to study it, or their study proposal was rejected as irrelevant, or someone did and their research never saw the light of day.

Considering how little research there is into Menopause and all menstral issues it does not surprise me that the issue was dismissed.
If it affected men I promise you it would be researched.

Summerswimmer767 · 04/08/2023 06:41

I agree womens health is not a priority to research.
they also dismissed the moon impact on mood or appeared too. I complete disagree with that as my autistic child definitely struggles more with mood behaviour issues the day before a full moon. Someone asked on the send board and everyone was agreeing. Interesting program though.,

Up to 70% of the body is water - and blood (depending what comes up on Google). If the moon is affecting the sea in such a massive way as to cause the tides, how can it not affect humans. Even the Police expect more trouble over a full moon - luna - looney - people going mad!!

I saw two men telling women they're imagining it again. I wonder if the presenter had to take some deep breaths and be brave before saying 'menstruation' on TV?

Precisely. But because that can't be scientifically measured it's dismissed.

@MrsDanversGlidesAgain - spot on.
