Blondeshavemorefun · 25/07/2023 17:26

This is tv paced. Sadly all will be on iPlayer - really wish they didn’t do this till all have been shown

Sighs

It’s 6 parts - on Monday and Tue x 3 weeks

Wolf is BBC One’s latest crime thriller offering, and we couldn’t be more excited.

From Happy Valley and Better toInside Man
and Crossfire,
the BBC has wowed us consistently with its recent
thriller (https://www.stylist.co.uk/tag/thriller)
output.

Now, another meaty new drama is on the way and it looks like one we’ll have no problem getting our teeth stuck into.

Wolf is set to be BBC One’s major new crime drama and it’s based on Mo Hayder’s bestselling Jack Caffery novels.
Ukweli Roach (The Midwich Cuckoos (https://www.stylist.co.uk/entertainment/tv/the-midwich-cuckoos-keeley-hawes-sky/513967)) will play DI Jack Caffery, and now that the BBC has unveiled first-look images from the show, we can’t wait for this adaptation
to unfold on the small screen. With that, here’s everything you need to know about
Wolf

The upcoming six-part series will be based on the novels (https://www.stylist.co.uk/tag/novel) of Mo Hayder, who rose to prominence within the crime thriller genre for her terrifying tales and shocking twists.

The BBC drama will blend a cold case (that has a personal connection to the lead detective) with some sinister parallel storylines.

“DI Jack Caffery is a young man searching for himself,” according to the BBC synopsis. “Obsessed with the neighbour he believes murdered his 10-year-old brother in the 90s, Jack finds himself trying to right the wrongs of others, but at what cost?

“In an isolated house in Monmouthshire, the wealthy Anchor-Ferrers family find themselves the victims of a psychopath’s cruel games, trapped and terrorised.

When the two narratives collide, it’s a thrilling, nail-biting and
deeply disturbing race against time.”

As well as Roach leading the cast as Caffery, the cast is jam-packed with familiar faces.
Sacha Dhawan (Doctor Who) and Iwan Rheon (Game Of Thrones (https://stylist.co.uk/tag/game-of-thrones)) will star as Honey and Molina, a pair of mismatched professionals who are forced together on a job.
Sian Reese-Williams (Line Of Duty (https://stylist.co.uk/tag/line-of-duty)) will star as DI Maia Lincoln, a woman with a case to prove; Juliet Stevenson (Bend It Like Beckham) will star as Matilda Anchor-Ferrers, an intelligent yet neurotic housewife; and Owen Teale (Line Of Duty, Game Of Thr
ones) will play Oliver Anchor-Ferrers, Matilda’s wealthy and well-connected husband.

Good point @Rollergirl11 tho he obv isn't a famous actor

I'm loving the comical bits in this ~ when Honey and Molina were being questioned by the real police and Honey called Molina his boyfriend and was corrected by Molina 'Fiance' 😅

I' m waiting to see how this ends , think it'll be good .

butterpuffed · 15/08/2023 16:00

Is Becca , the housekeeper, the same woman who Honey found dead in the scullery , the one who was murdered when moving the furniture ? 🤔

faffadoodledo · 15/08/2023 18:06

I assume it is @butterpuffed

Just finished.

Wow.

I think the series is based on actual existing novels. Anyone read them?

Also. Probably being dim. But why 'Wolf'?

Good question, why was it called Wolf.

Yes.
And who was the man who lived alone in the forest? He mentioned a missing daughter, so was that Becca the housekeeper? I don't actually think it was.

GreenShadow · 15/08/2023 20:15

"I think the series is based on actual existing novels. Anyone read them?"

Yes - all her books are on the gory side but if you can cope with that, they are all excellent reads - she was a good story teller (now sadly deceased at far too young an age).
Wolf is actually one of the later ones in the Jack Caffery series, so I'm surprised they plumped for this one.

I've read all Mo Hayder's books a few times. The man in the forest, also known as The Walking Man, is a mysterious character who appears in most of the Jack Caffrey books. In the books TWMs daughter was murdered and he searches continuously for where her murderer buried her.

fluffiphlox · 15/08/2023 22:04

Well what a pile of pants that was. It couldn’t decide what it wanted to be and I thought there was no tension or real jeopardy. Very disappointing and a waste of a good cast.

@faffadoodledo I've ordered all 7 off eBay. Think was £20/21 for Al so less than £3 per book

Wow that was unexpected

So they met in the mental institution? And became a couple

Who then terrified friends and killed Sophie and Hugo

And daughter wanted to Kill her parents and get their money

I did feel a bit sorry for honey getting killed

Molina def had a few mental issues his self as well

He seemed to enjoy killing

And the dad Oliver 🥲

But yah that Tilly survived

Glad their daughter didn't

Tho how will Tilly live with the fact her daughter killed her husband /and was the donkey pitch killer

Was surprised that DI maia was happy to
Put the wrong (tho pervert) man inside knowing the donkey fields killer/s were still at large

Meant to say about last nights / so usually jack doesn't drink. He's always said no but he was knocking back shots

Is he in recovery or just doesn't drink

And last think I didn't quite understand about jacks brother - might have to rewatch that bit again

So he was taken but not by next door neighbour

All in all I really
Enjoyed this. Kept us on our toes and didn't guess the ending

I think it’s one of few things that are better for binge watching. It’s such a complex storyline I wouldn’t have been able to follow otherwise.
I really liked the plot didn’t conform to the usual troupes.

And his brother didn’t die as he thought. So there’s series 2 I guess?

daffodilandtulip · 15/08/2023 22:49

Just wow. That was all a big bonkers. I kept wondering why I was carrying on watching but (I think) I'm glad I did. Nice to watch something a bit different.

I didn’t get the relationship between Jack and the woman running the investigation. I just didn’t get why they were shagging. Also, if she was in Wales then why did she know so much about the investigation into the missing brother which was in London.

PriamFarrl · 15/08/2023 22:58

He was taken but not murdered. The toy that was delivered was made after he was taken but it had his fingerprints on it. That means he must have been alive touch it.

SabrinaThwaite · 15/08/2023 23:12

So … another series then?

I’ll miss Honey and Molina though.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/08/2023 23:15

Thanks @PriamFarrl

And the shoe ?

I thoroughly enjoyed it, so glad I saw this thread as the trailer made it look a bit silly like a farce, but it was such a good story with lots of twists and turns I didn’t see coming.

I liked that everything wasn’t totally spelled out. I think in the flashback scenes to the Donkey Pitch murders when Jack was in uniform & met Maia for the first time, they started getting very flirty, so it seems likely they had a fling then but it was just a physical thing - so easy for them to pick that back up when they met in the present day?!

I don’t think Tilly will find out the truth about her daughter - Jack destroyed Oliver’s written confession. I think he decided it would be best to leave the other guy in jail because he seemed almost certain to act on his thoughts if he was released, it would also maybe wreck Maia’s career. Lucia and Molina were dead anyway so maybe Jack thought there was nothing to be gained by telling the whole story?

I think the neighbour (Penderecki?) did take Jack’s brother Ewan, didn’t he confess when he was beaten up in prison … or was The Walking Man making that up to try and give Jack closure? It was seemingly the neighbour who was taunting Jack leaving the toys that were Ewan’s (or similar to what he’d had). That’s until the last robot toy, which Jack knew wasn’t even made until years after Ewan had disappeared. Jack had always assumed the neighbour took his brother, murdered him and his/buried the body somewhere. The twist at the end was them finding Ewan’s fingerprint on the robot toy - which means he was still alive years after he’d gone missing, and may even still be alive now.

I think it’s a bigger mystery why the neighbour would give him a clue like that? Why did he keep the robot toy, and why give it to Jack now? I think there’s a lot more to the story of what happened to Ewan. I imagine that might be an on-going story arc through hopefully a few more seasons of this, seeing as there’s a few books that can be adapted?

RainySummer · 15/08/2023 23:22

Jack thought he was having dreams/nightmares about going into the neighbours house to look for his brother when he had gone missing, he went down to the basement and could see someone moving about behind a door, maybe Ewan? But then he heard the neighbour was coming downstairs, so got scared and escaped out a high level window, one of his shoes got caught on the broken grate outside but he ran off leaving it behind.

That was the shoe that was left on his doorstep in the present day - that meant it actually happened and wasn’t just a dream/nightmare.

HopefulSeller · 15/08/2023 23:30

That was a very strange, bonkers series! I hate gore, and not a fan of horror, and it had a completely silly ending (no ‘satisfying oh I see I should have known’).

BUT I quite like it and can’t wait for the next series!

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/08/2023 06:17

Ok I rewatched the last 10m

Forest man told him that Penderecki was always going to kidnap his brother , had planned to grab him on the way home via an alley that ran past the park but the fight gave him the opportunity to grab him earlier

The shoe was jacks and probed wasn't his imagination thinking he went knot the house - he did a almost his shoe and Penderecki kept it and put on doorstep to taunt him ?

Yes maybe if Jack had told parents he went in his house they may have found his Brother and Penderecki gone to jail

But that's a big thing to put onto an 8yr

The toy made 6/8yrs later had his brothers finger print on it

So didn't die then. Possibly is alive now ? Tho why hasn't he come forward - unless memory has gone from all these years ago who he is ?

I really enjoyed this and regulars know I love the wait each week , how we can discuss theories and can't do that if binge and watch all in one night

Molina kept telling honey the family deserved all they got and a big boss wanted revenge - obv the boss was the daughter and down to Oliver and Tilly sending her away ?

Is that it ?

I will finish the book im reading then start on book one of these series

Im entrigued about forest /wandering man and his daughter as someone posted about

But shame we won't ever know what happened to jacks brother as this is book 7 and then the author sadly died

Unless she had notes and someone writes under her name ?

OP posts:
faffadoodledo · 16/08/2023 07:03

My big question (which kept me awake last night was at what point did it dawn on Oliver that his daughter was behind his situation? Was it right at the end when he had heart failure? Or sooner? Since we now know he knew (or strongly suspected) she was involved int he Donkey Field murders.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/08/2023 09:07

I think he knew @faffadoodledo early on hence the letter

The fate of Jack's brother is comprehensively covered in another of her books.
