Rosie Jones: Am I A R#tard?

purpleme12 · 22/07/2023 00:19

Did anyone watch this?
I'm 6 minutes in and I'm actually shocked at some of things she says people have called her online.
'that she should be in a cage '
'that she deserves to die'
It's disgusting

I haven't seen it yet but why are you surprised?
You only havevto.read some of the threads on here about disabled to.children to.realise a lot of people would rather they were locked away somewhere particularly if their behaviour is problematic
Its horrible to.read as the parent of a severely disabled child.

Eenymeanymineymo · 23/07/2023 18:30

Watching it atm. Who cares whether people like her humour or not?! She's a human being, like we all are. No one should be subjected to abuse like this. About time something was done about it.

Loads of other disabled artists have criticised her. She says she hopes using it and watching the documentary will make people realise how awful it is. But unless you watch the programme where she makes that point, then it's just giving legitimacy to ableist slurs.

Truly surprised by the number of people who still think the r word is ok. Come across them in a surprising and distressing context recently. I really had thought we’d moved on

PriamFarrl · 23/07/2023 18:43

I don’t really like her comedy but the amount of abuse she puts up with is shocking. Why do people, and by people I mean men - let’s be honest, think this is ok?

Billoddiesbeard · 23/07/2023 18:50

SabbatWheel · 22/07/2023 00:38

Can’t stand her as a comedian, she is really not amusing in the slightest, but respect her for getting out there and doing it. People can be absolutely vile, sadly.

This exactly!

CoffeeWithCheese · 23/07/2023 18:54

I don't particularly like her, and I don't find her comedy funny - but the abuse isn't on; however when she's popped up on my Twitter feed she's not been behaving in at all a pleasant way either, and I know a lot of people who are really really upset by the title of the show. I don't think it was necessary to use that particular term as the title for the show and her attitude when organisations raised concerns over it was pretty nasty as well.

purpleme12 · 23/07/2023 18:57

Oh I haven't seen anything on Twitter from her so can't comment on that bit

Scautish · 23/07/2023 19:04

I don’t understand why anyone is even bringing her comedic talents into this thread? It’s just another needless and irrelevant dig.

it’s disgusting that some feel that they can say these things. Piss poor parenting or low intelligence to blame probably.

It’s abhorrent and should unequivocally condemned without irrelevant caveats.

bellac11 · 23/07/2023 19:04

I havent heard that word for years but Im not sure why people are up in arms about her using that as the title

She's raising real issues but is going to be shocking about it, both because thats proabably her style but equally some of the things that have been said about her are shocking.

Like others I dont think she is very funny but this show wasnt really about her comedy.

BasiliskStare · 23/07/2023 19:08

@Anoobis and @purpleme12 I don't find her funny - which as a comedian pretty much the job , but many other people may. She does not deserve those dreadful comments. I don't find Lenny Henry funny either but that is just my choice. I am sure many comedians I like , others wouldn't . The title is punchy to say the least - & she must have known what she was doing - but her choice. But a woman doing what she does and if not everyone likes it I can see that. However I would say if you set out to be controversial , don't be surprised if people disagree.

That said I wish her well

AutumnCrow · 23/07/2023 19:17

I might write to her. I think I can do this through her agent.

I do wish some of these pricks would face arrest for anti-disabled harassment if they do it repeatedly. And I bet Rosie Jones gets a lot more than Adam Hills and Alex Brooker. Funny that. Absolutely steeped in misogyny.

Simonjt · 23/07/2023 19:30

“I havent heard that word for years but Im not sure why people are up in arms about her using that as the title”

Probably because so many people think they know better than people with disabilities, the same people who speak loudly and slowly to people with disabilities no doubt.

No it isn't. You don't have to enjoy the work of someone purely because they have a disability/are from a minority group/whatever. To pretend that you do is patronising and disrespectful to them.

You don't have to pretend to like someone because saying you don't might lead to people thinking that you're being ableist/racist/whatever. That too is dishonest.

People are people, and equality means that you treat them the same as anyone else. Which includes liking or disliking an individual's work or personality.

Scautish · 23/07/2023 19:51

Of course everybody needs to get held to same standards

if the topic was “is Rosie holt funny?” Then yes of course she gets held to same standards as any comedian.

but the topic of this thread is deeply ableist and personal attacks on a woman with a disability. Her career choice is irrelevant. So I stand by my original post. There is passive aggressive ableism on display on this thread.

purpleme12 · 23/07/2023 19:51

I think perhaps @Scautish was trying to convey that it didn't feel necessary for people to post saying 'i don't like her comedy but...'
Because it wasn't necessary to bring that into this really

Its absolute rubbish!!!

Her job is in the public eye, her job is a comedienne, so of course people are going to comment on her job role, she isnt presenting the show as a bog standard member of the public, shes on the show only because she is a comedienne who happens also to have had these awful attacks on her.

People commenting that they are not fans of hers are not making digs for gods sake. Its a fact

Truly surprised by the number of people who still think the r word is ok. Come across them in a surprising and distressing context recently. I really had thought we’d moved on

I was told by a very well educated man I do charity work with that not being able to use the r word was a step too far. He saw it as harmless for his children to use, and apparently they use it regularly. Obviously he wouldn't let them use the n word, racism is abhorrent, but disabled people don't deserve the same protections and respect as other minorities according to people like him, despite many of them WAY more vulnerable.

PriamFarrl · 23/07/2023 20:17

It would be just the same if she were a politician of different political views to me but making the same program. I’d likely say that I don’t agree with her politics but feel for her about this. Or if she was an artist whose work I didn’t like. Or a clothes designer who’s clothes I didn’t like.

She has been given this platform as she is a comedian.

Blankspace4 · 23/07/2023 20:23

Tbh kudos to her for reclaiming the word if it’s been thrown at her as an insult.

Will be giving it a watch.

MrsSquirrel · 23/07/2023 20:46

Also bear in mind that the decision to use the word in the title was not hers alone. The show's producers would have agreed. Knowing it would be controversial, they probably also got approval from Channel 4.

namechange998 · 23/07/2023 22:19

I don't find her consdy funny but she was amazing in casualty as an alcoholic who had her children removed. I was really moved by her character. I haven't watched yet but will. It's disgusting what these awful keyboard warriors think they should be able to say to people.

Jaredy · 24/12/2023 17:15

What the doc failed to mention is that people are complaining about her "comedy", not her disability. She's lewd, unfunny & crass. That's all. And her revisiting her "Greta Thunberg" "joke" again on "Unforgivable" was, actually unforgivable - you don't say stuff like that about a 16 year old girl.

Justleaveitblankthen · 24/12/2023 18:05

SabbatWheel · 22/07/2023 00:38

I'm with you on this.

She told a "joke" once about 16 year old girls should be going out and getting fingered (instead of doing boring stuff) it was so crass and beneath her IMO.

But yeah, bloody hell some people are Vile.

MidgeFragnets · 24/12/2023 19:01

It doesn't surprise me she has had that said about her. Even MN is full of people who are vile towards disabled children, blaming the child and parent if their child is disruptive in a school because theit needs are not met - when local authorities refuse to fund specialist places and we have a government who is contemptuous towards disabled people and won't fund the LAs. But it's the disabled person's fault they are born with a disability or acquire one, not them.
