This is a 4 part factual drama

on Monday 17 and Tue 18 , then mon 24 and Tue 25th

all will be on iPlayer but this is tv paced !!!!

The BBC has released first-look images for The Sixth Commandment, a brand new four-part true crime drama which explores the deaths of Peter Farquhar and Ann Moore-Martin in the village of Maids Moreton, Buckinghamshire, and the extraordinary events that unfolded over the following years.

The images show Timothy Spall as Peter Farquhar, Anne Reid as Ann Moore-Martin, Éanna Hardwicke as Ben Field and Annabel Scholey as Ann’s niece, Ann-Marie Blake, alongside Sheila Hancock as Liz Zettl and Ben Bailey Smith as Simon Blake.

The Sixth Commandment tells the story of how the meeting of an inspirational teacher, Peter Farquhar (Timothy Spall), and a charismatic student, Ben Field (Éanna Hardwicke), set the stage for one of the most complex and confounding criminal cases in recent memory.

It also focuses on how suspicions around Field’s relationship with Ann Moore-Martin (Anne Reid), Peter’s deeply religious neighbour, unlocked a series of chilling revelations.

The Sixth Commandment explores the way in which both Peter and Ann were manipulated by Field, capturing the extreme gaslighting, the gripping police investigation and the high-profile trial, while poignantly highlighting the devastating effect of isolation and loneliness, as Field closed in on them.

It also celebrates both Peter and Ann’s lives as cherished mentors, much loved relatives and adored friends.

What I found particularly horrifying was just how easily two obviously incredibly intelligent individuals were sucked in by his persona.
He is a narcissistic psychopath.
A compelling watch.
Well done BBC.

I've seen how these type's operate, they have a great deal of charm and a magnetic personality and can get inside peoples heads . Don't go as far as Ben did obviously. It's so frustrating when you know what they are doing but everyone thinks they are wonderful . You can see It in Anne's niece , the frustration.

Martin was actually Peter's friend first as he was living in his house

R.E.M. Ben tried to get rid of him

He felt guilt at the £10k

I don't think he had anything to do with it

And was cleared of stuff

At end of no 2 last night - looked like Ben was trying to score /woo her best friend where martyin was living

Another single elderly lady

Not sure what the next 2hrs of 3&4 will show

Court dealing. Maybe ?

Sure the brother feels awful
As he knew something wasn't right but didn't push it

But in the end - th only one to blame was Ben

Pure evil

And scary that this is actually based on real life

Seems to real to have ever happened

Scary how quickly go downhill when being drugged

Martin got the room with Peter through Ben, though

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/07/2023 11:59

These were the drugs he used

Oh. Missed that

I thought Peter knew Martyn before ben

He looked very uncomfortable on the bench over the letters and knowing he was 'with' Peter then Ann

Yes Ben recommended him as a lodger. I'm undecided whether Martyn was involved. Maybe it was just 'Ask no questions ...'.

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/07/2023 12:06

Reading articles I am still shocked I don't R.E.M. this case at all

Another one here saying what happened and pics of Peter , Ben , ian and his wife

Maybe it was. He said he had no idea Field was planning on defrauding Peter and also that they were in a relationship even though he was Peter’s lodger.

@Roussette sorry to hear about your fil

Thank you. The thing is... my DH and his sibling are just nice people ... bit like Peter's brother and wife. It's sort of... don't make a fuss, I'm sure it's alright, don't want to upset anyone... I felt uneasy about it all but it's not my parents, I couldn't make DH and my SIL do anything, and then it's too late!

DaisyThistle · 19/07/2023 15:03

@Roussette what a tragic story.

Is anyone else intrigued by Field's childhood? There's almost nothing about his parents online beyond their jobs and that his dad too was a vicar. But I am intrigued as to whether they spotted something in his behaviour as a young child, or whether something happened to him in childhood - an accident or fever that caused inflammation of the brain. Or if beneath the respectable exterior, the family home was disturbing. Or even if there is a hereditary element and one of them is a dormant psychopath - feelings nothing for others but doesn't act on it maliciously because that could be inconvenient. I find it very hard to believe a psychopath just pops up in an ordinary family, and he comes across as a textbook psychopath.

I wonder if he was made to feel superior and special as a child because he was so clever . Therefore he felt he was intellectually above most people and thought he was some how invincible , superior and entitled. I wonder too if he was never said no to by his parents

Hmm I wonder if this woman has form for this ! Try digging into her background . Free BMD could throw up any past marriages.

@kraftyKitten I can imagine how that might make him insufferably conceited and selfish but what makes someone so very cruel and calculated?

Also, he wasn't exactly a genius. Two As and a C at A level and a 2.1 from Buckingham is not stellar academic achievement. The poems he wrote really were not that impressive, either. Farqhuar must have been blinded by love to think they were.

Gloxinia · 19/07/2023 16:50

This poem certainly isn't great

It's actually worse than that.

He used to do them as rap

SilverSpringss · 19/07/2023 17:51

Martyn Smith was DH's best man at our wedding. Obviously I've named changed as this is VERY outing. All I can say is he is traumatised by it all and his life will never be the same thanks to Ben Field.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 19/07/2023 18:08

oh, i believed martyn smith, he seemed such a naive character.

Yes, I believed him as well. And I’m glad he has friends. He just seemed such a quiet man who lacked confidence but perhaps were wrong.

lazymum99 · 19/07/2023 19:23

I believed that Martyn Smith was innocent. He seemed a very vulnerable man with little self esteem who was also manipulated by Ben Field. He had a lovely relationship with Lizzi, the lady played by Sheila Hancock who also
seemed broken after finding out what was happening.
