This is a 4 part factual drama

on Monday 17 and Tue 18 , then mon 24 and Tue 25th

all will be on iPlayer but this is tv paced !!!!

The BBC has released first-look images for The Sixth Commandment, a brand new four-part true crime drama which explores the deaths of Peter Farquhar and Ann Moore-Martin in the village of Maids Moreton, Buckinghamshire, and the extraordinary events that unfolded over the following years.

The images show Timothy Spall as Peter Farquhar, Anne Reid as Ann Moore-Martin, Éanna Hardwicke as Ben Field and Annabel Scholey as Ann’s niece, Ann-Marie Blake, alongside Sheila Hancock as Liz Zettl and Ben Bailey Smith as Simon Blake.

The Sixth Commandment tells the story of how the meeting of an inspirational teacher, Peter Farquhar (Timothy Spall), and a charismatic student, Ben Field (Éanna Hardwicke), set the stage for one of the most complex and confounding criminal cases in recent memory.

It also focuses on how suspicions around Field’s relationship with Ann Moore-Martin (Anne Reid), Peter’s deeply religious neighbour, unlocked a series of chilling revelations.

The Sixth Commandment explores the way in which both Peter and Ann were manipulated by Field, capturing the extreme gaslighting, the gripping police investigation and the high-profile trial, while poignantly highlighting the devastating effect of isolation and loneliness, as Field closed in on them.

It also celebrates both Peter and Ann’s lives as cherished mentors, much loved relatives and adored friends.

How is Éanna pronounced? I'm guessing nothing like I say it in my head...

JaneJeffer · 28/07/2023 14:48

Ay-Anna @CrossPurposes

RaraRachael · 28/07/2023 15:34

I (and many others) consider people from the island of Ireland to be Irish whether they are from north of south of the border. I had a work colleague from NI and we always said "Mr X is Irish" and it didn't seem to bother him.

I know it's incorrect but that's how I think of it.

MC's character in LoD isn't from Nottingham. There os dome backplot in series one to explain away a London accent ( apparentlybecause thus was an accudent MC could do). Have always wondered why they just didn't allow him to be Scottish!

i can't understand why he can't be scottish either

Ay-Anna @CrossPurposes

Thank you. Definitely not how I was saying it.

Theblacksheepandme · 28/07/2023 16:50

It's actually pronounced ay-na and not ay-anna..

That's an anglicised pronunciation

It most certainly is not. I lived in England for a while and always thought it was funny how people actually gave their children Irish names that they couldn't pronounce properly. I am originally from a Gaeltacht area in Ireland and should know. The below is how to pronounce it properly. I also have a friend with this name. I love the name.

Me too. Like Ian but with uh on the end.

JaneJeffer · 28/07/2023 20:13

Yeah sounds completely wrong. It's Éan - which is Irish for bird - pronounced ay-an + na at the end so ay-anna

I think Éanna might be said a bit differently depending on dialect?
Éan seems to have a second subtle syllable in Munster but not in Ulster, so it would follow that Éanna has that extra sound in some places not others.

What Gaeltacht are you from @Theblacksheepandme ?

(The youtube link doesn't sound anything like Ian as said in my accent I have to say, but accents vary so much. It appears maybe Ian is like Éan in some accents? )

I'm from the west and to me éan sounds like the Connacht pronunciation here www.teanglann.ie/en/fuaim/%c3%a9an but the Ulster pronunciation is different

LizzieAnt · 28/07/2023 20:48

Yes, the Ulster pronunciation of éan seems to have one syllable. I'm in Munster and the Éanna I know (from a Gaeilgeoir family) also says it AY-an-na. I think it's just dialectal. So we can all be right - yay!

JaneJeffer · 28/07/2023 20:53

Well me and you can be @LizzieAnt WinkGrin

Identity in NI is complex. Some NI people would be very happy to be considered Irish, but others wouldn't at all.

@JaneJeffer 😁
And here's me trying to pour oil on troubled waters 😅

I'm just waiting for someone to correct my bad Hibernian grammar now Grin

Munster

LizzieAnt · 28/07/2023 21:45

Well, there goes that theory!😁
I've only heard it as AY-an-ah as I said. The middle syllable is subtle, mind. But then I'm not from a Gaeltacht, so I don't know...how do you say éan, by the way? With one syllable or with a subtle second one?

TonTonMacoute · 30/07/2023 16:19

DaisyThistle · 27/07/2023 07:07

You're right. I hadn't thought of it in this way. If Martin didn't have a genuinely wicked mindset then he might has dismissed comments about harming Peter as sick jokes. He was prbably equally skilfully manipulated. Ben's brother was found not guilty too and he was arrested at one point for being involved in the medical money fraud.

DH kept saying that even if you were suspicious about Ben’s motives how on earth could you point to anything as proof that he was bad. No one, even those closest to him, could really imagine he could be that cynically ruthless.

I can only base my thoughts on the drama, but it did seem that Ben was relying on the fact that even if he was suspected no one would ever be able to prove anything against him.

Its been a fantastic performance by Eanna Hardwicke, I hope he doesn’t get typecast as psychopaths though.

My MIL had Alzheimer’s and she went through a very paranoid phase when she wouldn’t let us help her, so was relying on neighbours for help. One lot are fine but there was one I wouldn’t trust an inch, it was a very worrying time.

PriamFarrl · 30/07/2023 16:40

As you say, if you were suspicious, how could you prove anything.
Nice young Christian man doing good work by helping out the elderly people of the community. Who would suspect anything? And if you do say anything then he had enough people fooled that they would stand up for him.

Sugarplumfury · 30/07/2023 20:47

I’ve just finished the first episode but was so sad and terrified for Peter I can’t face the rest. If it was a drama I could, but knowing it’s true, it’s just horrific. Poor, poor man and Anne .
