I hadn't remembered any vilification in the press, it must have passed me by.
It is a joyful documentary but l also think, having seen it described as an "origin" story for George, that it explains a lot: be careful what you wish for. He was an ugly duckling turned swan. A lad who was not initially confident, who faked it til he made it, with Andrew and Shirlie's support throughout those four years.
Massively talented, razor-sharp focus, knew what he wanted. Difficult father.
Achieved his ambitions.
Now imagine getting older, putting on weight, facing demons and addictions. That's tough for all of us, let alone when you're in the public spotlight. It's tragic.
I am not sure how much of a recluse he became in that last year but heart breaking that he died the way he did (I should add here fatty liver is one of my own fears, given my own lack of self-care/diet) and of course, Melanie later. Last Christmas finally becoming no.1 here but George not being alive to see that happen remains bittersweet.
