The Surrogacy - Netflix

Anybody been watching this Mexican drama? It was highly rated as popular in the UK on Netflix so I've been looking for somebody in my circle to discuss it with and nobody's seen it.

I really didn't like it at first from a feminist point of view, of the main character being forced to be a surrogate and referred to as a 'walking womb' on several occasions, nor did I like the portrayal of the wife who couldn't conceive as a baby-obsessed hater of other women who wants to steal another woman's baby, this is a stereotype often seen in the media and is so harmful to infertile women. But once the drama got going I was able to accept it for what it is, a melodrama and I ended up quite enjoying it.

One major plothole for me was how they didn't twig that the baby girl was Yeni's as soon as they found out Yeni was pregnant with 2 babies. We are supposed to believe the couple are well seasoned at IVF etc. How did they not figure out that if the embryo that would become Luciano had split, that it would create an identical twin to Luciano, and not a female baby? This is a family who work in the medical industry.

I wasn't sure how I felt about the ending. I was glad to see the racist, nasty MIL get her just desserts (though you could say it was another harmful female stereotype) but it all felt a bit corny.

I kept watching mainly to see what became of the children, and I liked that they got a happy ending at least.

I found the relationship between Yeni and Carlos gross as well, that is Stockholm Syndrome in action. I think we were supposed to see the ending as empowering for Yeni but I didn't see it like that at all, she just remained 'owned' by the Huziar family. I didn't see Carlos as a good man like the show portrayed at all. I'd have preferred the ending to be Yeni making her own way.

I'm half way through. I'm really enjoying it. It's like a slightly more grown up version of telenovelas, but pretty much bonkers in all the same ways. I'm half expecting an evil twin to turn up or a cursed diamond.

Yes it does have those vibes doesn't it? It's a load of shite really but you can't look away from it. As awful as she is, the MIL is a fascinating character. Sadly enough, I found her by far to be the most believable and realistic character. There are a few narcissists in my dad's side of the family and minus the fortune and business, they are exactly like her.

I also find it bizarre how people are just casually kidnapped in the show. Surely Mexico isn't THAT bad?

A couple of my old school friends lived and worked in Puebla for a while and they never mentioned kidnappings, but they did say the racism towards the indigenous comminity was shocking. This was in the late 90s though.
Yes mother in law very interesting, no real commentary so far on how her marriage was, did she off her husband?
She is an unapologetic narcissist and makes no effort to disguise it. My family has a couple of narcissists in it, but they are extremely charming and hide their game well....not that well obviously.

I have just started watching this and am on episode 4. Decent so far but can't believe how active Yeni is just a few hours after her cesarean! 😅
