Thanks for the heads up, I’ll definitely be watching it. I’m partially deaf, the result of meningitis as a young child, so this is very close to my heart.

Elderflower14 · 26/06/2023 20:12

Bumping this ready for 9pm.

About to watch this but a bit behind.

Elderflower14 · 26/06/2023 21:22

In tears already... I know exactly how Roses Mum feels. Ds2 wasn't diagnosed until he was two and a quarter. He had his baby hearing test.. He didn't turn round so they said they would test again. We got to my Dads. DH got out of the car and banged on the window and ds2 turned round. He then had an ear infection and didn't get tested again till I chased it up.

Watching

Rummikub · 26/06/2023 21:32

Her lip reading is phenomenal
Does Rose have any hearing?

purpleme12 · 28/06/2023 21:54

I know this isn't the point of the programme but I love her top she's wearing when she does the reading test.
Does anyone know where it's from??

She does , well definitely in one ear.
But it said she had significant loss

purpleme12 · 28/06/2023 21:58

Her mum didn't know if she'd ever say mummy that got me 😢

purpleme12 · 28/06/2023 22:27

He said 'because my speech isn't that bad'
His speech was completely normal!

They get people comment about selective hearing too 😠

purpleme12 · 28/06/2023 22:48

She's right. She said sign language should be free. Sign language is really expensive to learn
That is the only reason I haven't learnt it 😔

I wasn't going to watch this but actually I found it quite insightful and informative

Rummikub · 28/06/2023 23:27

I learnt bsl at college. I can’t remember what the fee was.

And now im using an app called bright bsl which I quite like. But I agree it should be taught in all schools.

purpleme12 · 28/06/2023 23:29

I just don't think there's any substitute for person on person learning ie with a teacher there with you.
And it's all cost 😔

Rummikub · 28/06/2023 23:34

I do agree. Receiving sign is difficult to learn. And best done face to face. Try bright bsl in the interim though- it’s been good to update.

I wonder if makaton is cheaper and more accessible. If so why isn’t bsl.

Adarajames · 29/06/2023 00:45

Makaton is a limited number of gestural signs, not a complete language and so it’s far quicker / easier and cheaper to learn. Level 1 BSL is often available at relatively low cost at adult Ed type classes, the higher the level the more it costs however. I got stuck when it was going to cost me around £1500 just for the portfolio / assessment, couldn’t afford that or higher levels sadly

Rummikub · 29/06/2023 08:18

Yes I found that with level 1 bsl- it was affordable.

Level 1 should be more accessible for schools. Wasn’t that the plan- that there would be a bsl qualification for schools?

dollybird · 29/06/2023 17:24

I think she said that BSL should be free for people who need it, so not necessarily taught to everyone in schools. I did a five week course at a local college that cost £5. It was a good course, but I didn't have someone to use it with, and I very quickly forgot a lot of what I learned (and I picked it up pretty well compared to some of my classmates). A bit like other languages, I guess.

I was really cross about the man who shouted during her Shakespeare performance, saying it was discriminating. I really felt for her, she was do upset. But happy to see she was nominated for an Olivier award, so 🖕to that man. Does anyone know if she won?

Yes the problem is keeping it up if you don't have the opportunity

REP22 · 29/06/2023 17:45

I watched this on the iPlayer last night. It was excellent. Really well put together and presented. The footage of old tv programmes about deaf children (particularly about how they "were likely to be retarded") was truly grim. I hope things are better these days. I think Rose has done a lot to change things for the better. Our local schools am dram put on a musical recently, where the whole cast signed their way through two of the main numbers, though none of them were deaf.

I was also sickened by that utter tool who disrupted Rose's performance in 'As You Like It', glaring right at her and yelling that he was being discriminated against (I think he shouted “you're discriminating against hearing people” at one point). I hope he saw the programme and feels some remorse for his ignorant rant (sadly I doubt it). Sadly she didn't win the Olivier, but she has so much talent.

In a world of increasingly vacuous and interchangeable celebrities and "reality stars", Rose really shines though with genuine talent and charm. I think the world of entertainment is a much better place with her in it.

Rummikub · 29/06/2023 17:56

I think they should go further and offer it in schools. There have been attempts to get bsl recognised as an official language of the U.K. but with out luck.

Things like deaf awareness should be routinely offered too.

I believe it has been officially recognised. I remember Rose posting about it on her Instagram www.itv.com/news/westcountry/2022-05-06/were-finally-recognised-british-sign-language-gets-official-status

Rummikub · 29/06/2023 18:06

Long time coming!

Elderflower14 · 30/06/2023 15:26

Ds2 took his last Level 3 BSL exam last night. It's cost me.......... £900!!

Well done to your ds!

It is a lot of money.

purpleme12 · 30/06/2023 16:04

Wow that's a lot!
