In dreary postwar Manchester, Annie Roberts is at her wits end when husband Terry spends all his wages down the pub. Desperate for a better life for her children, Annie responds to an emigration advert that promises Brits a prosperous new life in Australia for a tenner. Expecting whitewashed houses and sun-soaked adventures, the Roberts family arrive in Sydney to find life down under isn't quite what they've been sold.

Ten Pound Poms is the new original drama series created by BAFTA-winning Danny Brocklehurst (Brassic, Ordinary Lies) produced by Eleven, the team behind the award-winning Sex Education. A co-production between BBC and Stan, the series will premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK and as a Stan Original Series in Australia.

The six-part series follows a group of Brits as they leave dreary post-war Britain in 1956 to embark on a life-altering adventure on the other side of the world.

For only a tenner, they have been promised a better house, better job prospects and a better quality of life by the sea in sun-soaked Australia.

But life down under isn’t exactly the idyllic dream the new arrivals have been promised. Struggling with their new identity as immigrants, we follow their triumphs and pitfalls as they adapt to a new life in a new country far from Britain and familiarity.

At the heart of the drama are Annie (Faye Marsay) and Terry Roberts (Warren Brown). They try to make the best of the situation for their family, but the poor living conditions at the hostel and local attitudes towards immigrants test them in ways they couldn’t have imagined.

They aren’t the only people at the hostel avoiding the truth. Kate (Michelle Keegan) is a young nurse who arrives without her fiancé and will do whatever it takes to try and rewrite her devastating past.

Bill (Leon Ford) has lost his family business back home and is so desperate to prove he’s living the Australian dream that he’ll stop at nothing in order to get a lifestyle he can’t sustain.

Teenager Stevie (Declan Coyle) comes from a troubled background and hopes to use this new adventure to escape his oppressive father.

Meanwhile Ron (Rob Collins), an indigenous Australian war veteran, struggles with feeling like an outsider in his own country.

I would imagine the Peter getting lost storyline was a ploy to bring Terry and wife closer together?

Also Peter made friends with the aboriginal boys.

bizzey · 12/06/2023 14:43

I think they should have had the aboriginal community joining with them to look for Peter.

How are they going to find their way back out again ?!

I watched episode 4 last night and episode 5 tonight. Am liking it slightly more now that (1) Pattie has finally told her parents about her pregnancy, (2) Terry has a business opportunity which will take him away from that awful job digging tunnels and (3) Terry has been able to share his WWII flashbacks with two friends.

I'm not altogether sure what the future holds for Terry and Annie. Annie got cold feet about her date but that doesn't mean he won't pop up again in a future episode (or series 2?). She seems to really resent Terry and I'm not sure if they can make a go of it, especially given the lack of marriage counselling services in the '50s.

I can't believe nobody has questioned why Pattie is wearing a big coat in Australia! And surely she wouldn't get away with wearing it at school?

I don't understand why the guests at the party were so welcoming and friendly to Annie but so antagonistic and unfriendly to Terry. If they had an issue with Terry being a pom, surely that would apply to Annie too?

I agree that it was ridiculous of Kate to tun up at her son's house. At first I assumed (like most of you) that she would kidnap him and run off with him (where to?). But she turned up at the house and rang the doorbell. What was she hoping to achieve? Did she think she could tell the adoptive parents that he was her son and they would let her walk off with him? Also, surely she'll lose her job now after her fight with the matron? What will she do then?

Sheila's awful husband is bound to get his comeuppance and then Sheila will be free to take her girls back to England.

I'll watch the last episode but I'm not sure I'll come back for Series 2. There's just been too much drama and misery. I'm sure life as an immigrant wasn't all a bed of roses but I would have expected the setbacks to be things like homesickness or difficulty adjusting to a different climate (none of the characters has mentioned the heat at all and there would have been no air con in those huts) or encounters with wildlife such as snakes and poisonous spiders. Instead we've had a hit and run, an unplanned pregnancy, alcoholism, PTSD, marriage problems, domestic abuse, a missing child etc. All in the space of five episodes!

Also, there's no mention of family or friends back home. I know long distance phone calls were effectively impossible due to the cost. But people would have written letters, even if they took a long time to arrive. In one of the episodes, Kate said that she was worried about her mother's illness and I was thinking, "Well, why don't you just write to her and find out how she is?"

purpleme12 · 13/06/2023 23:04

Is the aboriginal man Terry's friend though? (Sorry can't remember his name)

bizzey · 13/06/2023 23:14

They were sort of friends as in they were both the outsiders....but then Terry confessed to him about knocking the child over so the friendship soured .

Terry had been trying to make amends.

bizzey · 13/06/2023 23:14

I think his name is Rob ?

martinisforeveryone · 14/06/2023 14:44

The actor's name is Rob, the character is Ron Mahoney. I wouldn't have thought Mahoney was a name you'd usually associate with someone of Aboriginal origin,
He lives in his own community, so there isn't any appearance of his mother having 'married out' as you might term it, but there you are.

I'm not clear who the man is who's got the big plans for the boat house on the beach? but I'm really hoping they make a big success of it and it's a way off the building site or whatever it is, for both Terry and Ron. Is it a building site? are they pipe laying or something? I only ever seem to see trenches and the dunny.

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/06/2023 15:49

The job was laying pipes. The man with business plans was the one selling alcohol from his hut.

martinisforeveryone · 14/06/2023 17:10

Thanks @CaptainMyCaptain for some reason I seem to have missed the selling of alcohol. Well, there's such a lot going on with everyone 😁or more likely I zone out from time to time.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/06/2023 21:28

I’m watching it purely to drool over Warren Brown (Terry). He’s absolutely gorgeous. 💕

martinisforeveryone · 17/06/2023 18:24

If any of you like Rob Collins (Ron) he's in the second series of Secret City on Netflix and so is Doris Younane who plays Heather in Five Bedrooms. I enjoyed both series if anyone is looking for something else to watch. I think Five Bedrooms was a BBC showing.
