I think I probably saw this play when it was first shown on the BBC in 1987. We watched it again last night and absolutely loved it. Set in the late 1950s, family seaside holiday from the days before most British people could afford to go abroad, reluctant 17-year-old boy staying in guest house with his parents. Excellent performances all round, and very evocative for those of us of a certain age. (The teenagers in the play are nearly 20 years older than me but the UK hadn't changed that much by the time I was growing up.) Filmed in Southwold.
Written (beautifully) by Michael Palin, drawing on his memories of similar holidays. Apparently he met his wife on holiday in Suffolk when they were both 17. They were married a few years later. Very sadly, she died earlier this week.
It's his 80th birthday today but I don't expect it's a very happy one. I hope in time he can look back on 57 years together and find comfort in having had a very strong and loving marriage. https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2023/may/02/the-bedrock-of-my-life-michael-palin-announces-the-death-of-his-wife-helen
