Sex and violence tv with teen - Buffy, Angel, Veronica Mars, Alias etc

I look forward to watching some old favorites with 13yo son.

Trying to figure when he is old enough for Buffy, Veronica Mars, Alias and similar. Buffy probably ok now (possibly too dated, we will see!) but rape is a big storyline I think in Veronica Mars and quite a bit of violence in all of them.

At 13 does pretty much anything go? A few of his friends have watched things like the Scream films which I think he is too young for.

The first couple of seasons of Buffy I'd have thought were fine, the violence is almost cartoony.
Just stop before Spike rapes Buffy (I don't think I'll ever be old enough to be okay watching that episode).

Veronica Mars while the violence is less on screen the themes of rape and grooming and child abuse are a lot for a thirteen year old.

Alias has some torture scenes that are rough.
Chuck is a good alternative for a spy type series.

We've really enjoyed Star Trek TNG and Voyager with DS1 who is 12 this year. He found Buffy a bit boring but maybe just isn't quite old enough yet.

I might try him on Clarissa Explains It All Smile

Is it cool for kids to be watching tv shows from their parents time? I'd be getting him to watch something more current.

I watched buffy at 13 and it wasn't even a thought that it might be inappropriate.

We watched all the seasons of Buffy with younger DC during the pandemic. As others say, you just need to know where the really upsetting Spike/Buffy storyline gets gritty and skip that. It actually doesn’t ruin any enjoyment or understanding. Angel, however, seemed not to grab them at all - from the get-go it’s quite dark so we didn’t keep going.

Veronica Mars - we also tried this and I hadn’t seen it before and I got more and more uncomfortable with it, so we stopped after season 1. They’d have carried on watching but I exercised my veto.

Useful feedback thanks, I have forgotten much of the detail like torture in Alias. I remember loving Veronica Mars but again sketchy on detail.
I think we'll start with Buffy and leave the others.

Is it cool for kids to be watching tv shows from their parents time? He enjoyed Schitts Creek, Superstore and other recent series. Buffy is amazing TV though, others I mentioned weren't pivotal in the same way.

(Things which DS has been into past couple of years...Oasis, cassettes, retro earphones, 80s synth music... Retro seems to be the thing!)

Buffy was amazing but I tried to watch it again recently and gave up after one episode as it was so disappointing compared to what I remember.

We watched Buffy up until the rape and Dark Willow arc. We started Angel too but the Cordelia/Connor storyline is so uncomfortable and awful that DS gave up around there. We're currently watching Doctor Who from the reboot.

To flag on Buffy, I don’t think I even noticed first time through, but Xander in The Pack is definitely on for sexually assaulting Buffy and it’s glossed over.

We have the exact same taste in TV. My son is 1 so imagine how dated they'll be when he's ready 😂 but I'm sorry Buffy is a must! I think 13/14 is probably okay. It's difficult isn't it but I suppose you can't keep those themes away from them forever and it could offer good discussion points. I started watching Buffy at 12 but I watched all sorts 🤦🏻‍♀️

PS. The Angel boxset season 1 was always an 18 in the UK. No idea why! But maybe a bit dark for now.

I liked watching shows my parents had liked, if you can ignore how grainy and weird everything looks pre 2004 then a lot of them are still good, even if they definitely wouldn't be made today
I watched buffy at about 12 or 13 it seemed pretty age appropriate
Also liked veronica mars but a bit older, maybe 15 or 16
Also liked Jonathan Creek at about 11
