The first of a three-part crime drama, based on real events. Samantha Stobbart's fears about the release of her violent ex-boyfriend Raoul Moat from prison become justified.

(Cant see a thread on this, so thought I would start one)

@BenCoopersSupportWren yes it was. It must have been after the shooting now I remember, and the police car was parked on there. Just a horrible situation.

BenCoopersSupportWren · 18/04/2023 10:55

I'm simply going by what was portrayed on the programme last night.....that is they way it is being told

Of course, and I can't say for sure it didn't make the difference between life and death for Chris either. But the programme was a drama, and they're going to highlight (or twist) the parts that make for good television, so we shouldn't assume it's gospel truth.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/04/2023 10:57

I think Moat would have gone after Chris anyway. Regardless of wether he thought he was in the police.

CaptainWentworth · 18/04/2023 11:02

I might give this a watch. I drive past that roundabout a lot (live nearby) and I often think about what happened. I remember seeing police cars parked there often previously, but not in recent years.

JenniferBooth · 18/04/2023 13:28

There is only one person responsible for Moats behaviour and thats Moat himself

100% this

Treessquirrels · 18/04/2023 17:39

I can’t bear to watch it. It’s too soon for a drama.
Raoul Moat murdered innocent people. And destroyed innocent lives.

I think it's been a pretty poor programme. It's all a bit disjointed and doesn't capture the essence of the important bits- how bonkers Moat was, the fear that existed in communities, the shock on Tyneside. It's a bit sensationalist over the smaller things- the two men on the road in Rothbury for example, and the programme makers are obsessed with the idiots who championed and praised Moat, to the point where it feels almost like it's a bit of determination to show they don't agree with those people (who play no real role in the story).
The acting is poor, particularly whoever is playing Moat, who looks nothing like him and is physically much less imposing and less of a nutter. Everything is a bit distant/removed from the emotions and psychology of the events. Accents are awful.

I haven't felt at all moved by it, quite detached from it. DH and I had just got togther and I remember it all really clearly but this programme doesn't capture or reflect on it effectively.

I agree it makrs out everyone in the North East loved him. This was not the case at all.

tallcypowder · 18/04/2023 20:05

Oh was annoyed they missed out the Gazza bit.

JenniferBooth · 18/04/2023 21:40

Gazza just got mentioned

Toddlerteaplease · 18/04/2023 21:58

I remember that some people thought he was a hero. But surely people didn't react like the ones laying flowers or coming from miles away?

Yes they did! Moronic chavs

Sodie · 18/04/2023 22:26

I remember this case well. I somehow convinced myself he was coming for me and was terrified (I live in west wales so nowhere near him).

girlfriend44 · 19/04/2023 14:18

feel sorry for the boyfriend he killed, and the PC who was blinded. I think Moat is better off dead obvs had huge issues and thats an understatement.

what does it matter? Sorry you werent entertained enough by this tragedy. 🙄

GOW56 · 19/04/2023 14:43

She made appalling choices in life and continued to do so afterwards.
She was only 16 when she net him. Little more than a child. He manipulated her. I don't think it's fair to say she made appalling choices as they were not informed choices

IwantToRetire · 19/04/2023 17:09

I dont know why I dont remember hearing anything about it, so I watched the programme, and was more caught up in the story but do think some of it wasn't that good in terms of how situations develop during the time the police actually got involved ie after the first murder.

And also the horrible fact that because the prison only got round to sending the information about Moat having made threats arrived after everyone went home on a friday afternoon, Moat had the whole weekend to be at large and without any awareness of the police about him. (which makes one wonder why the police dont have people working weekends on some sort of shift basis - or like hospitals when you are fit to go home but because its late on a friday it cant be arranged until the monday)

I dont think that any blame can be attached to Samantha Stobbart irrespective of age, social back ground, education level. It is utter irrelevant. The only person responsible if the violent man and was please that at the end there was information about support for those suffering domestic violence.

Added to which not only was Moat a violent male, but used steroids, and had too many men friends who were prepared to help him carry out his violent revenge plan.

One day I hope we will have programmes that will show that far earlier on in the life of a man turning into a violent thug, that it will be able to show that not just the community, but family and others intervene at an earlier stage.

It is horrifying to know that there are man like that, walking the streets and worse in homes where women are living.

I thought it was truly excellent and very sensitively done.

I must admit I was very curious as to whether they would feature Gazza's bizarre intervention, and they did but only very briefly!

I think it's tragic that Samantha got blamed by some, and also tragic what happened to David Rathband.

potniatheron · 19/04/2023 17:14

tallcypowder · 18/04/2023 20:05

Oh was annoyed they missed out the Gazza bit.

They did have him. Just before the mention of him on the 'news' programme, you see a shot of a bridge and hear a Geordie shouting "Moaty! I've brought chicken!"

very brief as it would be too bathetic to make any more of it, a case of life being stranger than art.

IwantToRetire · 19/04/2023 17:41

Having posted a serious response to the series, I have to admit I got occassional distracted because of the location and because it was crime. A bit frivilous I know.

First appearance of Lee Ingleby I thought wonder if George Gently is pleased how Bacchus' police career has worked out!!!

Then oh look Joe (from Vera) wife has got a new job.

And there were others.

I think I watch too many crime dramas.

My random 'oh look' was Gervaise from Hebburn as the editor of the chronicle

ScarletPower · 19/04/2023 19:24

Whoever asked if they'd depicted Birtley differently - the location of the estate where Samantha lived was actually filmed in Bradford - I thoroughly enjoyed location spotting as a few local locations were used including by the canal at Shipley.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/04/2023 21:11

Documentary on tonight about the investigation. Feels not quite right that this evil man is getting so much air time.

illbeinthegarden · 19/04/2023 21:28

The program seems to suggest that the police tasered Moat while he had a shotgun held to his head and his finger on the trigger? Surely that's not right? Did he willingly pull the trigger or was it a reaction to being tasered? I don't recall mention of it at the time...

I know it was filmed in Bradford, but the Vigo area of Birtley isn't that different tbh
