A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

The Wolf game? Yep that'll do it. I think I sat staring into space in shock for a few minutes after that episode.

I watched Big Mouth and it was nothing special 6.5/7 I think I gave it? The storyline lacked depth, I felt.

Thanks Mig. I’m not a fan of LJS either. Sounds like a swerve for me. 👍

The FL's one dimensional acting on The Real has Come is starting to annoy me, but the second lead couple 💕If this show was Memories of the Alhambra, the warning "an enemy has appeared" would sound.

For the interest of most in this thread.. from my publishing gossip circles I know there is an embargoed book coming out on 9th July which is a music memoir. Rumours are that it is BTS.

Oooooh I don't know how I'd feel about that. With all the themes of freedom in the current solo work....taken with the amount of backstage content etc. already shared over the years....Korean society.....the K-pop industry as a whole....what kind of book could it possibly be? If you see what I mean. A total tell-all extravaganza would potentially be career-ending for the domestic market - and presumably disillusioning for fans - but a carefully worded whitewash wouldn't add anything much to what we already know. In any case, if it's true, PLEASE let the translation be good. Where's Anton Hur when we need him?! (Excellent Korean literary translator who is apparently also ARMY. As he refers to BTS occasionally on his IG and posted his own translation of Namjoon's recent letter 👌).

polkettle · 09/05/2023 09:34

Gong Yoo fan klaxon 🚨 that he is doing a lot of frankly risky but picturesque diving into a pool in his current Insta story.

I did wonder if Anton Hur's RM love - and beautiful letter translation rather confirmed that RM might be known to belong to the Seoul queer community Saram.

TheLoupGarou · 09/05/2023 11:02

Just on my tea break and was going to write a considered reply re potential BTS book, but I'm off to insta first to check out Gong Yoo's diving form 👀 < fist-bump pol >

@polkettle the slo-mo !!! Perfect for admiring... Form as you say @TheLoupGarou

Purely scientific, of course...

Saram13 · 09/05/2023 11:58

Gong Yoo is positively TROLLING us there 😂 I could DEFINITELY be persuaded to put my white legs on show to use that pool. With or without GY 😃

Pol re: Namjoon. That never occurred to me, but is entirely plausible.

Same Saram same. Preference is 'in the pool with GY' though🔥

Rain oppa is in the gym on insta today, fully clothed looking at the weights though, no action shots yet....

Yeah I cried as well - didn't see it coming initially but then had slow, creeping realisation. Mr Loup was genuinely disturbed by it and wouldn't watch any more episodes for ages 😂

boatyardblues · 09/05/2023 14:43

Is Anton Hur easy to find on IG? It feels like I should follow him.

Wow so much slo mo! What excellent fanservice!

polkettle · 09/05/2023 18:33

Three episodes deep into Love Village and weeping with laughter at the awful delusional men. There's a 60 year old picture book writer who's brought her ducks and squirrel monkey with her too. It's like anti-Love Island and I'm hooked.

polkettle · 09/05/2023 18:34

Also Backstreet Boys is the soundtrack and there's two younger hosts who keep being shocked by all the older contestants talking so much about sex 👌 nonsense

I could watch those slo mo dives all day 😂 - living dangerously with all that slippy concrete around though. Careful you don't do yourself an injury GY!

MigsandTiggs · 09/05/2023 20:19

I've been totally entranced by Superband on YouTube (with breaks for Anton Hur and Gong Yoo). Love the concept of putting (random?) singers and musicians together. They are all very talented and so versatile in the genres of music they can play. I'm still watching/listening to the 2019 show and then there's Superband 2!! Found the show via googling Woosung stuff💖

Saram13 · 09/05/2023 21:17

Pol I'm racing through Love Village too. It's bloody brilliant. YES the awful mansplainers YES Backstreet Boys (referencing when they were in their Leeds Era?) YES the ducks and monkey. Genius. And what's the deal with the host's fluorescent teeth???

bettys · 09/05/2023 22:33

Very much enjoying My Perfect Stranger on Viki. It's genuinely gripping at times, and so far I am keeping up with the timey-wimey aspect.

AmVa · 10/05/2023 04:42

Really getting into Lovestruck in the City. Took a few episodes but once they made it clear how all the relationships worked together I started liking it a bit more. Also JCW was a bit sappy in the first few episodes...
I am surprised by how racy it is for a K-drama. (relatively speaking).

On the subject of JCW since I don't think this obsession is going anywhere soon - Talk to me about the K2 - proper action or fun action romance ?? I definitely preferred his characters in healer and suspicious partner who had a bit more of an edge than his lovestruck character.

polkettle · 10/05/2023 06:57

The hosts keep talking as if they're so much younger but they must at least be in their early/mid 30s Saram? Got to episode 5 and new house entrants ast night and then swerved into more delusional wannabe lovers in Jewish Matchmaking. Good telly times.

Cobol · 10/05/2023 08:26

K2 is proper action AmVa. Think Die Hard. I watched it when I was looking for some mindless fun and really enjoyed it but it's not as good as Healer.
