A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

I liked Seo In-guk in Doom at Your Service , there was some excellent snogging and sexual tension 👍 <shallow>

In case anyone's not seen this iconic Seo In Guk clip...(his mother honorary Filthy Noona)

I love this clip!! I rewatched it recently, so so funny. His Mum looks v not bothered 🤣

Me too. I rewatched it too. He has great screen chemistry with Park Bo Young. Mind you, she is great with most MLs (Abyss one of her misfires sadly).

That Seo In Guk clip is just as funny every time it resurfaces on this thread. 😂

My favourite bit is when the presenter says "wasn't your husband shocked when he found out" and she just says "well it was too late by then" 😂

AmVa · 18/04/2023 21:53

That clip was hilarious 😂😂

Agreed - Seo In Guk has amazing chemistry with all his costars. I loved the two of them in Doom At Your Service although that show did go off the rails a bit. I've had shopaholic louis on my radar for a while so will check it out maybe when I need a cheer up after SHLYE

MigsandTiggs · 19/04/2023 08:40

When I looked at that Seo In Guk clip on YouTube, the next one was of his flat.😳The mess!!!! It was what you would expect of a 10 yo living alone!

Saram13 · 19/04/2023 12:27

I hadn't seen that clip before (and am sorry to say I don't think I've seen the actor in anything either 😬). I like her attitude 😁

Anyone else looking forward to The Good Bad Mother? Very promising cast. And I keep seeing adverts for that programme with the guy from Suchwita episode 2 I think it was, Shin Dong-youp - Risqué Business: Japan. Can't decide whether to avoid it at all costs or bump it to the top of the list 🤔😂

polkettle · 19/04/2023 17:29

Looks like an idol from ASTRO has committed suicide. Desperately sad and further evidence of the intolerable pressure of that lifestyle.

TheLoupGarou · 19/04/2023 17:55

Oh shit pol really? That's horrible news, so sad.

TheLoupGarou · 19/04/2023 17:58

Only 25 years old?! God, that poor lad. May he rest in peace

DD just came downstairs upset to tell me the news. So sad for him and his family 😢

Saram13 · 19/04/2023 19:24

Poor young man. I feel so sad for his family and friends. I know the group by name but am not that familiar with their music. Friends of mine are and are pretty upset. They had just had a 'comeback'. Looks like he had previously taken a break for health reasons, whether or not related who knows. Child model and actor from a very young age. (Apparently he played a child version of one of the leads in Boys Among Flowers).

Saram13 · 19/04/2023 20:13

Sorry, *Over. Cooking while typing fail.

Metheven · 19/04/2023 20:28

Oh, that breaks my heart, that poor young man.

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 19/04/2023 21:16

That is so sad. The poor man, and his family and friends x

GoldenFarfalle · 19/04/2023 22:39

I just finished watching home town cha cha cha. Love it! Can I have recommendations please for a similar Kdrama? This was my first one and I'm surprised by the great actors and the great story.

polkettle · 20/04/2023 06:18

Oh welcome down the rabbit hole Goldenfarfalle and be prepared that you may be some time down here. Pack sandwiches and a thermos. SO many more where HtCCC came from. I think check out our Romance recs at the beginning of the thread and also the Slice of Life recs if you really liked the ensemble warmth aspect and off you go. Would suggest Crash Landing on You as your next watch because it's sort of the goat from a swoony epic story point of view. But if you want something more grounded and again focused on a small town community, then Our Blues, which weaves lots of different stories is exceptional.

TheLoupGarou · 20/04/2023 07:44

Welcome @GoldenFarfalle I was going to suggest the same as pol as good starters.... There is Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol as well or Maybe I'll Go To You When the Weather is Nice..... Ooo you have so much to discover!

Rowdythree · 20/04/2023 08:15

Welcome to the thread @GoldenFarfalle 👋🏻 you have so many amazing dramas to choose from! Good suggestions from Pol and TheLoup. Enjoy your journey into Kdrama land 😁

Andante57 · 20/04/2023 08:19

Welcome GoldenFarfelle

GoldenFarfalle · 20/04/2023 08:21

Thank you all. I'll start watching crash landing on you x

Saram13 · 20/04/2023 08:30

@GoldenFarfalle 🙂👋 you've had some great recommendations already. Crash Landing On You is 👌 I also loved Our Blues for the reasons Pol gives.

AmVa · 20/04/2023 09:27

@GoldenFarfalle welcome!! I second Crash Landing on You as an amazing watch - it is still possibly my #1 and certainly is my most rewatched show. I also started with HtCCC and became well and truly addicted. I would also recommend Romance is a Bonus Book for a pretty straight forward romance story.
Once you've been watching k-drama for a bit you'll soon realise that genre bending abounds - you'll think you're watching a romance and then bang! Serial killer plot line. Enjoy!

Cobol · 20/04/2023 14:14

Welcome to GoldenFarfalle. I agree Crash Landing on You is probably your best bet to watch next if you enjoyed Hometown Cha Cha Cha. I tend to prefer the more bonkers romances with supernatural elements such as Strong Girl Bong-soon but of the more straightforward romances I particularly liked Rain or Shine. There's loads of great ones listed on page one, so you'll never run out of recommendations!

Really sad about the singer from Astro. Is that the band Cha Eun Woo is from? There do seem to be too many of these sad stories from the world of k-pop. I hope this prompts some soul searching among those who are raking in the money at the top of the business, but the cynic in me fears nothing much will change.
