Why is the Jonathan Ross show so crap compared to Graham Norton?

JR is perfectly nice, the guests are personable and witty and yet it just doesn't have the warmth of the Graham Norton show. I don't know what's missing. Is it the giant empty blue studio maybe?

A lot of it is how GN makes the guests relax and encourages them to talk to each other and almost interview themselves.

the best Gn shows are when he’s literally sitting back and letting the show run itself. There’s some episodes when I genuinely wish they were half hour longer, because the synergy between the guests is so good. The Matt Damon/bill Murray/paloma faith episode is a prime example of that.

JR is more combative. I think the guests probably can’t let go, because if they do, JR might say something that could trip them up. Like a jellyfish stinger.

Tribollite · 26/03/2023 09:01

I like JR, but don't watch his show much any more because he seems to repeat his guests a lot, or they are just not very interesting. I'll try GN.

NewCarOldCar · 26/03/2023 09:11

The desk.

JR sits behind that stupid desk like he is the headmaster interviewing lesser mortals.
Graham has them all out together chatting with each other. And his laugh is very sweet and "giggly"

RocketIceLollie · 26/03/2023 09:16

Always feel like they somehow strained the fun element out of the Jonathan Ross show when it moved over to ITV.

They've just read out mumsnet comments about Greg Davis to Greg Davis on JR. Hilarious!!

On which show GN it JR?

TangledBlue · 26/03/2023 09:34

I don’t really watch either nowadays, but I prefer Jonathan Ross. The Graham Norton show has too much of a ‘luvvie’ vibe for me, there’s too many film stars (I don’t watch many films), too many American actors I‘ve never heard of or I’m not interested in, too many pre-rehearsed anecdotes. It’s all very glitzy and A list, but I personally prefer the more C list vibe, and the larger number of British guests, on Jonathan Ross.

Allmyghosts · 26/03/2023 09:42

Where does the Jonathan Ross show appear? Didn't know it existed. Graham Norton show is one of very few things I watch on TV, I do think he is very skilled and funny. I once waved to Jonathan Ross and his wife at a pixies gig 😂he had black and white striped suit on.

MsWhitworth · 26/03/2023 09:49

It’s funny you mention the studio actuallu because while everything everyone else has said is true, I do think there’s a big difference between a big black starry sky with a blue sofa and a warm orange and red background and sofa. Sets the mood?

BelindaBears · 26/03/2023 09:51

I haven’t watched JR in the last 15 years (tbh can’t believe it’s still going) but the last time I watched he was still making it all about himself whereas, as others have said, GN sets up the guests to be able to be display themselves at their best.

Crumpetdisappointment · 26/03/2023 09:51

i wouldnt watch JR
just can't enjoy it, he is sleazy
GN is much more personable

Crumpetdisappointment · 26/03/2023 09:53

is JR still have Ricky Gervais on every few weeks?

GN really does make an effort to allow his guests to shine. He sets up the intros to their stories so they can be amusing, and gently takes the piss out of them in a way that makes them laugh as well. Plus he can be really witty.

And every so often he manages to get someone absolutely leathered and it’s always comedy

Crumpetdisappointment · 26/03/2023 09:54

Matt Damon was so happy on GN show

Crumpetdisappointment · 26/03/2023 09:54

was it JAson Stateham who was leathered?

hellswelshy · 26/03/2023 09:59

Much prefer GN. JR seems to favour the male guests, practically ignoring the female ones! Last night when he had Jennifer Anistan and Adam Sandler on he had lots of questions/banter with Adam then asked Jennifer what it was like to work with Adam?! I've noticed this week on week, it's a bit uncomfortable.

GN lets his guests shine. JR only lets himself shine.

HorribleHisTories15 · 26/03/2023 10:15

Love Graham Norton's show. He allows the guests to build up chemistry with one another, and he acts as overseer or narrator. He leads the guests along the route he would like to take.

JR is always the lead showman. He is like the Gordon Ramsay of the show, booming out his opinion, stamping his authority on the show. Ross whips the guests while he rides his chariot of ITV doom. I always think that he is probably friends with Lawrence Lewylln Bowen, and probably Nigella Lawson. They share such similar personality traits.

Oh yes that reminds me of when James Nesbitt was on and JR said something like you like playing detective don't you, and read out a list of detective roles he had played. It was unnecessarily spiteful and just really awkward.

I find JR's gushing over the guests very superficial and a bit wanky, they must think he's an arse kissing twat. I'm not saying he can't be amusing at times but he should shut up and let them speak.

GN is a much warmer, engaging person who sets his guests up to be the star turn, and he can make them laugh at themselves and loosen up without getting too personal. And he gets them a bit pissed.

Crumpetdisappointment · 26/03/2023 10:53

just watching JR
he has changed the format,
he seems to have two on at once, and is sitting with a sofa, no large desk.
but still crude

TheLeadbetterLife · 26/03/2023 10:57

Graham is a brilliant interviewer and never puts himself above the guests.

the brilliance of his show is also the format - all the guests on at once, A listers and lesser mortals alike. All in it together, having a conversation. It helps the guests relax, because it’s not all on them. They also get to meet new people, or their heroes, which is fun to watch. That’s what makes it different, and better than every other chat show.

tothelefttotheleft · 26/03/2023 11:00

Does Graham Norton still do that bit with the ordinary people in the chair that he tips over? I couldn't stand that and stopped watching years ago.

HoleyShit · 26/03/2023 11:06

GN is fabulous - he's so watchable, warm, relatable etc. I just love the vibe of his show.

The one where he interviewed Robin Williams was just brilliant.

No contest between him and JR imo.
