Penny Dreadful: City of Angels - Sky Sci Fi

I've only watched 1 episode, and its seems to be an interesting crime drama set in 1930s Los Angelos, where there is tension because of discrimination against the Mexican community and trouble on the horizon because of Nazi sympathisers.

And a grisly murder.

But also some strange apparitions.

As it was shown some time ago on Sky Atlantic, did anyone watch, and does it all become very grisly and spooky so not really a crime drama at all.

Thanks

The supernatural element is very central to the show really, as it's a spin off I suppose of the first Penny Dreadful, starring Eva Green. That one was set in Victorian England, had Frankenstein, witches, possession etc. I liked it a lot. There are no recurring characters in PD: City of Angels (well any character appearing in both would have to have aged a lot..).

I also enjoyed City of Angels, and it was interesting knowing what was going on in California in this period, which I didn't know much about. But it is primarily fantasy. Don't let that deter you! There are some good actors in it, Natalie Dormer who was in The Tudors and Game of Thrones, and Rory Kinnear who's been in loads of stuff including at the National Theatre (he also appeared in the first Penny Dreadful, but as a different character).

Thanks yes, I keep forgetting that I am actually quite slow at understanding plots, and having now seen the second episode I am a bit more "in the loop".

Hadn't realised about the earlier series. So far this seems okay.

In my pursuit of proper SciFi series I have watched all sorts of shows I normally wouldn't bother with.

re. SciFi I started a thread about that and have lots of suggestions, but seem like I am going to have to sign up to additional streaming services, or wait years for them to arrive at Sky on Virgin Media! https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4766171-looking-for-real-sci-fi-series

I really enjoyed it and am disappointed they didn't do a second season of it. I loved the Eva Green ones too.

I watched a further 2 episodes and found it interesting with the interlinking stories, and the political context (not sure if it is accurate).

But dont understand or even see the need for the phantom characters.

It seems to me people will behave badly or even well without some supernatural force.

Maybe I need to have seen the original series.

But am enjoying the filming, costumes, music, cars that are as much a part of it. Maybe the filming is a bit too technicolor, for something that is meant to be a bit gritty.
