New police drama. 6 episodes. Shown weekly. Sure all will be on iPlayer (blondes yawns and sighs) but this will be tv paced and weekly and no bingeing !!!

Blue Lights on BBC1 follows three rookie cops trying to fight crime and navigate the tricky politics of Belfast.

Blue Lights follows Grace, played by Siân Brooke, who is mum to a teenage boy. In her 40s, she’s decided to leave her stable job as a social worker to join the police force.

It’s the biggest gamble of her life, especially as she finds herself making countless mistakes in her first few weeks on the job. Joining her are fellow rookies Annie (Katherine Devlin), who must leave behind everything she’s ever known to follow her dream, and Tommy (Nathan Braniff) who is desperate to prove himself despite being seriously inept when it comes to frontline policing.

The odds are at least one of them will fail the probation period and, to make matters worse, just being a cop in Belfast is a dangerous business.

Siân Brooke, Katherine Devlin, and Nathan Braniff as new recruits to the police force. All three are in the probation period with the PSNI, the Police Service of Northern Ireland, and must deal with immense pressure in order to make it. Added to that, they must navigate the complexities of being police officers in Belfast, which means they sometimes have to hide their true selves from those closest to them.

The trio must work out whom they can trust and who wants them dead simply because of the uniform they are wearing. "I am so thrilled to be playing Grace in Blue Lights," says Siân Brooke. "There is something incredibly special about the scripts and I was hooked from the very first page. Belfast is the beating heart of this piece and it’s a city I’ve been wanting to work in for a long time."

I missed last weeks but watched tonight! Is the guy with the grey beard working for the police as an informant? Were the undercover cops watching and taking pics going to swoop after the event? Jerry was the best his friend shouldn’t have mentioned the card from the south and their registrations that led Jerry to his end 😞

Did you notice on Happy's notice board there was something like, "Idle Talk Costs Lives" or something to that effect. If only he hadn't said anything.

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/04/2023 23:04

I did fancy Gerry

I quite liked Stevie

But it wasn't very clever to confront the Dublin gangsters all by himself, was it? Did he really expect them to surrender to him?

Yes I agree, it was a bit stubborn/daft of him to follow up the southern cars thing. Plus coincidence happy mentioned it and they were there at the exact time.

LadyEloise1 · 25/04/2023 08:04

So what happens now with the bungled M15 operation ?
Coincidence that we learn that the criminal head honcho in the series James Mc Intyre Silver Fox is working with M15 in a week that IRA enforcer and spy for the British Freddie Scapaticci died.

Poor Gerry never got to hear that Tommy passed his shooting exam. 🙁

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/04/2023 09:55

I'm hoping Gerry isn't dead

Grasps straws

The ambulance will screech to a halt and save him

@Blondeshavemorefun that's what I am hoping too!

martinisforeveryone · 25/04/2023 13:24

I was struck how some of them did the unexpected. Jen knowing Happy and being sensitive and kind to him. Tommy overcoming his problems at the range.
Stevie confiding in Grace at the kitchen table. It was all so personal and revealing and I was lulled into a false sense of security. Then 🫣

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/04/2023 15:06

Well as it was said above he wouldn't about IN A FUCKING SPOILER - blondes heaves bosum

I knew something would happen

And who goes in for a cuppa with a well known alcoholic

LadyEloise1 · 25/04/2023 16:02

Weren't some of Happy's family blown up in a fish shop blast, with Happy and Gerry waiting nearby ?
What side were responsible for the blast ?
If the IRA, both Happy and Gerry would be very conscious of the implications of a southern ( Republic of Ireland ) registered car being in a Loyalist particular area.

I have experienced getting lost in Belfast in a Southern registered car back in the day. Scary. Dad couldn't drive out fast enough.

Gothambutnotahamster · 25/04/2023 19:30

They never said who was responsible @LadyEloise1 & I must admit, I assumed they meant the IRA given they used to do that, although I also assumed Gerry was Catholic because of his name, so perhaps it was loyalists. Although then, a Catholic in the RUC was very unusual, so perhaps it was the IRA and the bombing was what convinced him to join the RUC in the first place. Basically, I have no idea but assume IRA.

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/04/2023 18:35

@bizzey you are on it anyway

I think he's probably just fed up of all the secrecy and it reminded him of the old days and he wanted it to stop?

Useless girl suddenly became someone you felt sorry for instead of irritated by!

Absolutely loved this! Season 2 ..Spring 2024 🥹

Gilmorehill · 30/04/2023 12:19

I absolutely loved this too. It’s a shame there hasn’t been a real buzz about it.

uhtredbebbanburg · 30/04/2023 14:05

I am binging (one a night) but started late so I'm now caught up with you guys and just watched the one where Gerry was shot last night. Considering I've only watched 5 episodes of a new drama, I'm so invested. I knew someone would get shot but I thought it would be scared girl after she semi-redeemed herself in Gerry's eyes by being nice to Happy. Who I think is not an alcoholic right? Didn't Gerry get him to pretend to be drunk so he could spend a night in the cells so as not to be alone. I think he's suffering from untreated PTSD from seeing his brother and father blown to pieces. Gerry was my favourite so still holding out hope that he will survive. He needs to know his police partner passed his exams! And he has such a nice relationship with his life partner. He can't leave her! I like all the police people except the one going through the midlife crisis and shagging the scared one and thinking it's true love 🙄. Long haired baddy doesn't do it for me at all but quite fancy Gerry. I'm in late 40s so quite like an older guy. I also like the same music as Gerry! DH was laughing at that because he puts up with my music taste.
What really strikes me is how some communities are stuck in these terrible circumstances. I have the education / money to get the hell out if I need to but I really felt for the knee capped boy's family and Gordy's (?) mum who are just stuck there. It's an eye opener and so sad. I'll have to go over to spoiler thread now because I am watching the last one tonight and will be back in a week!

LadyEloise1 · 30/04/2023 14:30

As @uhtredbebbanburg writes so succinctly ".....What really strikes me is how some communities are stuck in these terrible circumstances. I have the education/money to get the hell out if I need to but I really felt for the knee capoed boy's family and Gordy's who are just stuck there. It's an eye opener and so sad....."

This 💯
Heartbreaking.
But it's not just in NI.
All over the world people are stuck where they really don't want to be because of finances. 🙁

Ilovetea33 · 30/04/2023 15:05

Richard Dormer is 53, he's not that old.

Gilmorehill · 30/04/2023 15:13

Omg when that poor boy was kneecapped I actually screamed! It woke the dog up! It was horrifying. To think some people have to live like that 😕.

Gothambutnotahamster · 30/04/2023 15:36

No one has to live like that @Gilmorehill - they are choices that they make and they know the risks when they get involved.

There are plenty of decent people on both sides of the religious divide who live and work in those areas and don't get involved with drugs or terrorism. Those that do are choosing to and if you play with fire, then you may get burnt.

What is the same as in England is the scourge of middle class drug takers who think they're not doing anyone else any harm, when in reality it's this sort of situation (& the horror that is county lines) that they directly cause to happen.

toomuchlaundry · 01/05/2023 21:23
