Happy Valley query

I'd never seen HV, but today I binged the first series. Love it.

I grew up in London and Sussex, but have lived in Huddersfield (next big town to Halifax) for more than 20 years, via a few years in Sheffield, where dh is from.

Here's my query - I called my grandmothers "Granny" ; my dc call their southern grandmother Granny, and their Yorkshire grandmother Nanny.

I'm never come across a Yorkshire grandmother known as "Granny", but that is what Ryan calls Catherine. "Granny" doesn't feel regionally right for the Calder Valley. My colleague from Hebden Bridge definitely calls his GM "Nan". Granny feels very southern in my experience.,

Is it just my experience, or are Yorkshire GMs also known as "Granny"? I'm genuinely curious.

I live in the Calder Valley, born and bred- and I had two Grannies. My mum and MIL are both Granny X and Granny Y as well.

Sally Wainwright comes from Sowerby Bridge, so I don't think she would write something inauthentic, or completely unheard of.

Saying that though, I do think Calderdale varies quite a lot from the rest of W Yorks, in terms of accents, sayings & phrases etc

Thanks @Telephome. I was sure Sally Wainwright wouldn't have been inauthentic, but you are right - it's funny down the Calder Valley 😉!

It must be something in the water or all the weed 😂

We are a bit different though- for example I personally don't know anyone local who uses the term 'mam'. But friends from other places in West Yorks use it all the time. many of us use 'mom', which people tend to think of as a Brummie only thing (or american of course)

Well, the first five episodes so far. I'm on Covid Day 4. Still in bed, but able to watch tv on the laptop rather than sleep. I'm confined to my bedroom so I don't infect anyone else.

Oh I see. I needed a full day to recover after episode 4!

hope you recover asap.

GiltEdges · 06/02/2023 18:37

W Yorks here and both DMum and DMil are “grandma” or “granny” to DS. Growing up I knew my Yorkshire grandma as “granny” and my Welsh grandma as “nan” or “nanny” 🤷‍♀️

Mummyme87 · 06/02/2023 18:40

I’m from Newcastle and I have two grandmas. Live in London now, my mil is in Devon and she’s ‘nanny’ which I notice more down south, and my mam is a granny , she lives in Northumberland

spanieleyes · 06/02/2023 18:46

West Yorkshire, my two grandmothers were both Nanna, both were called Ellen so one was Nanna and the other Bobbie's Nanna- after the dog!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/02/2023 18:54

@EmmaEmerald I had to have a break after episode 4!

we called my grandmother "nana". She lived in the Calder Valley.

GlasgowGal82 · 06/02/2023 19:01

Granny isn't just southern. It's very common in Scotland too. Far more common that Nan etc.

MarthanotMarfa · 06/02/2023 19:02

West Yorkshire to the core here and Calder for much of it. 1 grandma, 1 granny. Nan or Nanny is certainly a commonly used name but my Grandma would tell you it was common 😳

Tallisker · 06/02/2023 19:32

I'm from just over the Pennines and I had a Granny and a Nana

BebbanburgIsMine · 06/02/2023 20:10

NE Scotland here,

My paternal grandmother was Granny, my maternal one preferred Gran.

My own mother prefers Grandma

OttersMayHaveShiftedInTransit · 06/02/2023 20:19

My son's northern (Newcastle) grandmother is grandma and his southern one (London) is Nanny. Mine were both Granny (Northumberland and London) my Mum's were both Nanna (both Northumberland). It's definitely not a straight north south divide.

Tinkeytonkoldfruit · 06/02/2023 21:03

My Granny was from North Yorkshire and very much a Granny. My DH is from that bit further North (Durham) and my MIL and is a Nanna to our DD.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 06/02/2023 21:07

Ds's grandmother is a Nana.

VirginiaQ · 06/02/2023 21:27

I was born and bred in Halifax. My mother is 'Granny' and my Dad's mother was 'Granny' to me (and she would be 135 if still alive so not a new thing).

My Mum actively hates, 'Nanny'. As she says,' I'm not a goat'!!
