Anyone watched the Glee documentary?

I appreciate it may not be on a lot of mn radars. But I watched all of the seasons of Glee with my teen dd's so was very aware of the deaths of Cory Montieth and Naya Rivera. The arrest for child pornography and subsequent suicide of Mark Sailing. And the racism/bullying accusations aimed at Lea Michelle.

It's an interesting documentary with lots of content exploring how a third of the main cast died so young.

Where can you view it? Loved Glee back in the day.

autienotnaughty · 26/01/2023 21:18

Bit random actually it's on Discovery +. I signed up for 7 day free trial just to watch it.

I loved Glee when it first was shown over here and watched the first five series. I would be v interested in watching this. Need to check if I can get it on Now

XanaduKira · 26/01/2023 21:49

I'd like to watch it too - thanks for sharing - will have to try to find it.

autienotnaughty · 27/01/2023 06:36

Yeah I don't think it's been well advertised in UK. It's called The Price of Glee and it's on Discovery Plus. I signed up but cancelled the subscription so I got it free for a week.

I loved Glee, have watched all series 3 times through. Will sign up to that channel and have a watch.

If anyone watched it let me know what you thought.

I am on episode 2, I am wondering if its true re someone from the cast told him that he should have a drink if he wanted to not long before he died. Not sure who that would be or even if it was true.

It's so sad, I am not sure I'm keen on how they are speaking about Lea either, it seems quite unfair when they are using it in the context of Cory's death. Fair enough that she allegedly wasn't that nice to everyone but I dislike how some of the extras are talking about her but those who knew her well are saying she was good for him. She may have been awful to some people but it feels like to put that stuff in around the time they are talking about his death is wrong IMO.

autienotnaughty · 29/01/2023 16:27

@PugInTheHouse
I got the impression they were implying it was Lea who told him to drink. But why would anyone tell someone with an addiction problem that? Yeah if someone's saying she was awful to me then that's fair enough but it's abit like Chinese whispers.

Did you see the interview with Maya when she was a little girll? Very creepy.

OP posts:
PugInTheHouse · 29/01/2023 16:34

@autienotnaughty yes I was thinking it must be her, but if it was then it could have been in an argument where he was wanting to drink and she said 'well if you want to drink then just drink'. I find it extremely hard to believe anyone would genuinely tell someone they cared for to seriously drink. I, sadly, have had lots of experience with alcoholics and it is so so hard being a family member. You don't always do/say the right things but it's heartbreaking to know that they can't not drink even though they have lots of people round them who love them.

There are lots of people who have said she was unkind to them but I just don't like how it's discussed within the section talking about Cory's death, people will relate it to her being awful to him etc when it's not actually been said she was.

Just watching the episode with everything about Maya now.

autienotnaughty · 29/01/2023 16:44

I agree there was never anything to imply he was unhappy in his relationship with her.

I am not sure how to take the comment from Jane Lynch about Mark Sallings death. I think she probably should have said anything at all.

PugInTheHouse · 29/01/2023 17:24

Just googled and seen a few more things said about Mark Salling. It must be awful having such mixed feelings but most people were quite careful about what they said. I vaguely remember them being criticised for their tweets.

autienotnaughty · 29/01/2023 20:37

I agree it seemed to be justifying his actions and obviously there's no justification

PugInTheHouse · 29/01/2023 20:42

I thought it was a good documentary, I really felt for them all. They clearly loved Cory and Naya, obviously Mark too which must have been all kinds of difficult in a different way.

I really loved the series so found it quite interesting watching this. They went over the Mark Salling stuff quite quickly which is probably appropriate but also part of me felt they were possibly trying to brush it under the carpet a bit.

I also found it interesting that they didn't actually interview main cast members at all, this makes me wonder about some of the stuff that was said as it basically means no one was there to give another view about the events.

autienotnaughty · 30/01/2023 06:02

Yes whilst there was a lot of interviews there was no main cast/production team. I'm guessing they declined. It wasn't repetitive which some documentaries can be. I agree they didn't focus on mark much. Or the accusations against Lea, but I guess they have to be careful as she hasn't been charged with anything so it is just opinions technically. It is sad how difficult some of their lives clearly were inspite (or maybe because) of their huge success.

PugInTheHouse · 30/01/2023 10:47

Yes it does make you think that when relatively unknowns are thrown into fame like they were at such a fast rate, and they were still pretty young that the production teams, agents etc have a big duty of care that perhaps is partyl forgotten about. I am not blaming them but it just feels these young performers need more support.

I can see the logic. It's not anybody else's responsibility to tell an alcoholic not to drink, it's the alcoholic's alone - that sort of response to 'I want a drink, you're stopping me drink but you're making me want a drink and it's all your fault if I drink' makes it clear that the other person is not responsible for the alcoholic's sobriety or drinking.

maddiemookins16mum · 30/01/2023 13:00

We binge watched the whole of Glee during lockdown. Loved it. It reminded me of why I also loved Fame in the 80s.

60smusic · 30/01/2023 13:32

I seen your post last night and watched it today.

Wow, very good, I'm sure there's a ton of stuff we still don't know about. This seemed to just be the tip of an iceberg. I was shocked at a good bit of it. Didn't realise how hard they worked, those long, long days without days off.

You could tell that a couple of those speaking knew more than they were saying, the hairdresser and the stage decorator.

It was such a huge programme, I only watched a few seasons when it came out, I remember loving Mark Salling, thought he was gorgeous, was shocked at the time of his arrest what he really was, dirty bastard.

OMG, The amount of deaths, so many crew, so many strange deaths and so many suicides.. It does seem like it's cursed.

I guess the makers just ran with it when it took off, no one even them thought it would, everyone was surprised how well it did and I'm guessing when they seen that money coming in they worked them to the bone not giving a shit about their health as they didn't know how long it would last. The poor cast and crew.

Willynuts · 30/01/2023 13:45

A couple of them clearly wanted to say more about Lea but were probably worried about the legal ramifications. One of them went so far as to call her a narcissist which sounds about right.

Poor Cory. He seemed so lovely.

PugInTheHouse · 31/01/2023 01:30

Cory did seem like a genuinely lovely person. So so sad.

I saw that Lea got married eventually and had a child. She got a tattoo that says Fin 😥
