I watched this after a mention in a newspaper. I am sure it is a reworking of a french tv series whose name I cant remember but less gritty.

I dont know about photography / filming but it is almost like when they are going for an up market setting everything is almost too shiny.

I wont even bother trying to explain the plot, but the cast and casting is almost over the top. From Dervla Kirwan and Rupert Graves to Grégory Fitoussi (one for Spiral fans) and a whole host of others.

Oh yes, and lovely scenes of the French Riviera (I htink!)

Some parts have sub titles, some scenes quite violent / grizzly.

I haven't seen any other posts about this, watched last night, fell asleep so no idea how it ended but I really missed the reason for the vinca obsessed girls in wigs (other than to scare ioan gruffords character)
Why had she become such an icon?
She seemed very typical beautiful girl of her time and age.
Nothing especially distinctive apart from the hair which of course was a plot device to ebale the weird vinca flash mob.
I really wanted this to be better, especially with all the background sadness and sensationalism, hope he makes enough money to pay the bills, buyer a new small home for his kids and his ex can get back to her business of upcycling designer handbags for the great and good of Hollywood

I fell asleep in episode 3, and all I can remember up until then was that she had become some sort of feminist icon because it was suspect unsavoury men had killed her.

But I thought the body in the concrete was the teacher who had been killed by the student who was obsessed by her. Or rather his friend has killed him.

Not sure I am motivated to watch again.

But might if there is nothing else on one evening!

I keep drifting off watching it.

Anyone know what happened in the end? Had so much potential.

I watched the first half hour, couldn’t get into it at all, I found it a bit ridiculous so switched off.

It's so awful that I didn't bother watching half of episode 4 or all of episode 5 and just went to 6 to get the denouement. Oddly didn't feel like I missed anything and now you've said it makes sense now that it was originally French. Lots of things meant to be deep and meaningful and just aren't.

IwantToRetire · 28/01/2023 18:59

Well I've got to the end. I think I probably slept through some of the episode.

It could have been quite interesting, explorer how our perception of people can be so wrong, and what the consequences are.

But it just didn't work, and in a way too many plot twists.

I am sure they could have made it without that man droning on about how he remember this or that. Maybe just showing the signifigant scenes from different perspectives.

I gave up after the first episode. I thought it was awful. It could have been so bad it's good, but it's just awful.

Peppermintlover · 09/02/2023 19:53

Just slogged my way through this. Jeez it was awful. The narration of Thomas was so cringe and he is so unlikable, I wanted him to go to prison not his sleazy step dad. The whole thing was so far fetched and the cheesy/arty nature was naff. I watched 2 episodes left it a few weeks then thought best finish it but I really shouldn’t have bothered!

IwantToRetire · 09/02/2023 21:24

Do ou think those taking part, whether in front or behind the camera are aware at the time something just isn't quite working. Or does it come as a terrible shock once it is shown. Must be quite embarrassing!

I thought that about The Light in the Hall and Without Sin. Is everyone just having to go through the motions, trying to get through it, once the penny drops are in an utter lemon.

I’m about halfway through and finding it a bit disappointing TBH. The “cult” following of Vinca is rather unconvincing I think (to put it mildly), but I’ll see where it goes.

The cast is pretty high quality though for what is really a bit of hokum. But it is a bit daft that Rupert Graves is cast as Ioan Gruffudd’s father when there’s only 10 years or so between them (and possibly even less of an age gap for Dervla Kirwan who plays his mother). Plus I’m a bit confused why some characters have French names but are not French/speaking French, while others are. I’m probably overthinking it. 😂

I'm only just watching this and I agree about the casting, ridiculous age gap, they look more like peers! Not sure it will hold my attention!
