Strike season 5 - thread for those who have binged watched!

IwantToRetire · 13/12/2022 20:28

Just started this thread because I accidently binge watched the whole 4 episodes.

And I am totally confused.

I feel like there should have been another 2 episodes in the middle to explore the plot twists, in terms of the whodunnit (not the tedious will they wont they!)

I suspect this is because I very rarely grasp plots first time through.

If any one wants to discuss have binged please join in.

But would prefer not mentions of in the book they did this or that, want to decide whether in fact it was badly made or I am just to old and tired to understand.

Sad I know.

Joan id Strike’s aunt by marriage. Ted, Joan’s husband, is Leda’s brother.

Thanks for the point about M54 - I didn't grasp that at all. Nor how anyone could spot that holding back the box of chocolates was significant.

By the way, although it was gruesome, I nearly laughed outloud when in a flash back they showed the concrete being mixed in a large pudding bowl. Given the size of the hamper that had to be filled it must have taken a week. And no it wasn't funny, particulary as I thought the Doctor (sorry I am bad with names) was still alive.

And yes on one level Pat looks like she disapproves of all of them, but she is the one who sorts things out, and despite Strike's rudeness towards her, trudges in when he is ill.

And, much as I think JKR is brilliant and has done so much for women, I thought the misogynistic male, was almost a caricature. But I lead a sheltered live, maybe everyday women are having to put up with arseholes like that.

Sadly they are 😔🤬

Brain full of mush here - got the dreaded fluey bug - but I’ve forgotten from previous series about C’s parents / did Joan adopt him?

No, but she raised him and his sister

IwantToRetire · 14/12/2022 17:37

Sorry to hear that.

Also to show how bad I am at pulling clues together, of course there was the box of chocolates that made Strike ill. That made him think along a different line of investigation.

Really wonder why i watch these series, I am so slow, but makes it easier to watch them 2nd time round and find them quite new as I see things I didn't before.

I must be the only person who watched the Lewis series and was totally taken aback when this (to me) annonymous pathologist flung herself at Lewis in a pub and started kissing him! Or was that a totally different series.

@Milly4321 - Joan was married to Leda Strike’s brother, Ted. So was their aunt by marriage. She brought them up from time to time when Leda was going through a chaotic period in her life. Lucy seems indifferent to Leda and considers Joan more of a mother. Coroman possibly did too but was always loyal to Leda so never called Joan “mother” (Lucy did when Coroman was out of earshot…)

Milly4321 · 14/12/2022 17:49

Thanks, Hels20, it’s all coming back now - very slowly!

The bit that puzzled me was when Cormoran worked out who the killer was and said something along the lines of 'if I'm right they've killed at least 6 people'. Who were the 6 people? Was he just extrapolating because he'd seen all the pictures on the wall when he'd last interviewed her or were there 6 people we knew had been murdered and I just missed a couple (definitely was distracted a few times so I could definitely have missed some) - I could only come up with 4: Steve Jacks' girlfriends 1 & 2, Dr Bamborough and Gwylherm Athon.

There were others added to the list after, and a few others he could have worked out had been poisoned but not killed at that point, but I just didn't know how he'd got to 6 had been murdered, based on what he knew at that point.

AnnieSnap · 15/12/2022 00:59

Gwylherm
The Doctor, Margot
Two of Jax’s Girlfriends

I’m missing two others 🤔

At least it's not just me.

I wonder if perhaps the book had covered more deaths that could be tied in and they just lifted the number directly without thinking if it was logical for what they'd actually shown in the TV series. (Although as said before, also aware I could just have missed some references earlier in the series)

Howeverdoyouneedme · 15/12/2022 07:21

In the book there’s a lot about the son Kevin and how he’s always ill, I’m trying to remember who else she killed.

Shortpoet · 15/12/2022 08:41

She didn’t end up killing Kevin although she did try.

I the book she killed Kevin’s father and the woman he left her for. At the end of the book they were going to exhume the woman’s body to see if there were still traces of poison (however Janice had had Kevin’s father cremated to hide the evidence).

Shortpoet · 15/12/2022 08:42

As a young woman she also killed the first boy she fell in love with. He rejected her so she poisoned him.

HeartIsWhereTheHomeIs · 15/12/2022 16:51

I’ve always felt there should be more episodes in each series.

I didn’t realise Janice was played by his mum, thanks for sharing that! Tom Burke was looking quite slight this series - I thought they tried to make him look a bit more padded?
