i enjoyed this .Anyone else seen it ? A bit different to the norm and brilliant acting . Not enough action for my DH though. It’s on Netflix.

Yes, I really enjoyed it too! I read the book about a year ago and liked it but found it dragged a bit, so I preferred the film.

Inkanta · 01/12/2022 18:59

Yes was a bit different! Enjoyed it.

I enjoyed it too

Can anyone please explain a couple of things as I had to keep turning up volume as it was quiet so didn’t follow everything ,but whose were the booties ? Did she have a baby that died and what exactly was the sleeping medicine she took.If it was sleeping medicine ?

@kerstina she had a babe that died at 3 weeks old. From what I can make out during that time period the medicine she takes is opium. Which would be very very strong.

kerstina · 01/12/2022 20:05

Thank you . Yes they portrayed the potency of the drug well.

I really loved the book, but was really disappointed by the adaptation. It didn't have the vibe I was expecting.

Has anyone read the book? It sounds like I might be alone in my opinion!

SoyMarina · 02/12/2022 10:44

What was the medicine she took at night?

kerstina · 02/12/2022 11:04

Fifteenohfour said medicine of that time would be opium.

I agree with you.

I loved the book and was looking forward to the film. It disappointed me; details (concerning the dead brother) left out.

I loved the book (I don't remember the opium bit tho). I liked this adaptation. They skim over a lot of the nuance of the book.

emilydickinsonscat · 04/12/2022 14:29

What details about the brother @rosegoldwatcher (I've watched the film, but not read the book)

What details about the brother @rosegoldwatcher (I've watched the film, but not read the book)

When he was dying her parents made her share a bed with him, to keep him warm.

When he was gone she told her mother about the abuse and mum refused to believe her - that she was slandering her brother. She went to her priest on many occasions too; he told her that her sins were forgiven and she should never mention it again.

Thanks rose 😢

rookiemere · 04/12/2022 18:35

That background would have made the whole thing make a lot more sense - watched it but gave up concentrating much about half way in.

OldTinHat · 04/12/2022 18:44

The drug was laudanum. An opiod.

And yes, she lost her baby.

Willmafrockfit · 27/04/2023 23:45

Enjoyed this film very much, although the eerie music was a bit off putting, it was very visually appealing
