Is anyone else really angry at the WaterAid ads on Boomerang?

I know why they do it and I fully support their cause but why put it on a children's channel? My kids are probably younger than their target audience and maybe that's the problem, I understand that you can't protect them from the evils of the world forever, but mine are 4 and 5 and get really upset at the information being given that every 17 seconds a child will die. Does anyone else think that this is a little innappropriate?

My DSs are 4 and 2 and I believe it is quite right that they appreciate just how lucky they are to live in England where they have food, water, education, doctors and relatives who spoil them crazy with gifts that weren't delivered free of charge by Santa but purchased with hard earned money.
Children in the 3rd world have to face the harsh realities of life so why should our children be so closeted?
My ?home truths? attitude does not distress DS1 or plague his dreams with nightmares, he asks questions and I explain to him as best as I can but I?m always truthful.
Whether it is famine, drought, disease or governmental corruption as to why people suffer, I feel strongly that my DC should know the world they are growing up in, its never to early for education.

hm...if you don't want your Kids to watch that add, then don't let them watch that channel? There are so many channels that are aimed at your Kids agegroup...

3Ddonut · 31/01/2008 18:08

I know there are other channels but the kids choose their own TV and they like watching Scooby Doo and other Boomerang shows.

I am not opposed, whatsoever, for children to be informed about these issues and my children are happy to, and have in the past, had their gifts for Christmas and Birthday's be charity ones. They would be happy to give up a gift to give to WaterAid and I will ask them if they would like me to do this for them. My real problem with this is the fact that it's on at time when it's difficult to discuss it properly and at a time when they're winding down and the fact that the ad is very distressing and uses emotive words in very simple language. 'children will die' etc.

so would you rather they lied and said children won't die..
if you don't like it turn it off.

TheHonEnid · 31/01/2008 18:13

god turn the blinkin tv off

they dont have to sit rotting in front of Boomerang

TheHonEnid · 31/01/2008 18:14

no tv on schooldays here [stern]

3Ddonut · 31/01/2008 18:15

Yes, I would really, the ads are aimed at the parents rather than the kids so they could be a bit more subtle about it and most of the time the ad is on before you get chance to turn the TV off.

DS has seen these ad's. i didn't think he had taken too much notice until we were talking about a boy in his class called Pujan (poo shan)

he said his name was rude because he was called poo.
i explained that in the country pujan was from it probably doesn't mean poo at all and that maybe George meant someting silly instead.

he contemplated for a few seconds and said "yeah well his country is a bit wierd. they h ave to eat rubbish and drink water with bugs in it"

it took me a few seconds to work out what he meant. obviously he has seen those wateraid ads.

i did have to

tbh im more annoyed at the constant toy ads

agree with treadmillMom

They are using emotive language because it is an emotive subject. Kids ARE dying, and they are dying every SEVENTEEN SECONDSS fgs. And all because they have no clean water.

That is utterly and completely bloody shocking and terrible and if it gets in the way of our cosseted kids watching Scooby Doo...well I can't get THAT upset, really, sorry.

Life is tough sometimes, but its a lot harder to grow up without clean water than to have to watch an advert about it...
