America, 1890 - two strangers are drawn together in a violent landscape built on dreams and blood. An epic tale of love, revenge and power starring Emily Blunt and Chaske Spencer.

(Not hopeful as BBC2 seems to have clever clever dramas that are just frustrating rather then enjoyable)

Sorry if thread already created but didn't come up in search

I'm looking forward to it.

Looks good!

a violent landscape built on dreams and blood
That sounds a bit crap but I like Emily Blunt so I'll record and see. Thanks @IwantToRetire

Nearly threw up when they where eating 🤮
But really like it so far off to watch the rest of it!

getoutoftown · 10/11/2022 22:03

So far so good.

JellyfishandShells · 10/11/2022 22:09

I almost gave up about 1/4 of the way in but came back and watched all the way through. Excellent cast and now want to see where it’s heading.

getoutoftown · 11/11/2022 12:30

It has some great actors, good cinematography and direction so the main thing for me is if the plot holds my interest. It did slump in the middle a bit with the exposition but I think it will be a good watch.

Nolongera · 11/11/2022 13:00

If you watch it on the iPlayer, it's in UHD, picture quality is amazing along with the cinematography. Thought it was great so far.

IwantToRetire · 11/11/2022 15:30

I have to say the plot didn't really hold my attention, and in fact was expecting more as the director made the Honourable Woman and Black Earth Rising. Both with good story lines but both copout endings. At the moment it is more like some afternoon tv film of damsel in distress learns to fend for herself.

However I just loved the filming, the scenary, the staging of the figures against the sky, on top of boulders! Are skies like that every night, or do they wait for the right one, or is it all trick photography.

I think Emily Blunt is the producer, not quite sure what that means but implies she pushed for this to be made?

Another thread has been started so maybe this thread could be those who are watching week by week and the other for those who have binge watch judging by the op at www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4676034-the-english

Have asked mumsnet to change the title of this to TV Pace no spoilers as there is now another thread where those who have binge watched are discussing.

It had a lot more mindless killing/violence than I was expecting...

IwantToRetire · 14/11/2022 23:04

Episode 1 repeated tonight at 11:40pm on BBC1 for anyone who missed it.

Probably means they will repeat broadcast episodes each week on the following monday.

I think I must be the only one watching an episode each week.

So again in episode 2 the whole landscape and the way it is filmed, and so outstanding I wondered if it was partly enhanced / SGI?

But am still finding the plot a bit corny, and a bit predictable. Nasty upper class english man. Enigmatic American Indian. (I wonder what the Pawnee People think about this.) Delicate female flower learning she has stengths she didn't know. Stephen Rea type cast again.

In many ways I could do without all the what is meant to be deep conversations and just get on with the adventure.

But this is BBC2 so I suppose it has to have this intellectual aspect.

With so little else on I will probably stick with it.

I am watching weekly, always do.
Haven't seen episode 2 yet though, will catch up on iPlayer

IwantToRetire · 18/11/2022 14:53

Thanks purpleme12 - glad to know I am not alone. And interested to know what you think.

I might have to give up on this.
I'm not a fan of the mindless killing/violence

IwantToRetire · 25/11/2022 19:16

Well I am still enjoying the scenery but now feel the plot is so contrived so that Emily Blunt's character can make a statement about how everyone is stealing the land from the American Indians.

Or like one of those school history lessons where they insert an example of different strands of history (in this case a medley or europeans).

I agree the violence is unsettling but it seems again like the director is trying too hard to remind us that the invasion of america by europeans was violent.

I think the film the Homesman was more effective in reflecting the brutality of that life focusing as it did of the impact on mail order brides, rather than a well dressed upperclass woman on a revenge trip.

Well I was totally confused by last night's episode (4).

I am not good with the time jumps and also, although I am sure everyone thinks it is great acting, but if the accent adopted for a role makes the words hard to decipher it rather wrecks the drama.

So Rafe Spall (I think) was so busy acting I didn't really accept him but appreciate he is a key part of the plot, in a very negative way.

@IwantToRetire , I have watched all on I Player but I do not have every character and his/her history quite clear in my mind yet! I sometimes felt the need for the subtitles button.
