So I thought I'd give The Handmaid's Tale a go and so far I'm enjoying it but only on episode 3. I'm confused though and if I don't understand it, I'll lose interest! I've probably not paid attention but here goes.

Are the married woman all infertile so have the Handmaid's to have babies for them, or do they not want to get pregnant themselves.

How were the Handmaid's chosen, is it single women of childbearing age.

My 16 year old daughter is watching it to, I'm not sure it's appropriate though, is there anything worse to come that she shouldn't see?

Finally is it worth watching all 5 series or is it not that good. Its very bizarre but very watchable!

I'm bored now, s5 is just June raging. I feel it's past it's sell by

I’m 9 episodes into s5 and it does move along from the rage

@UWhatNow exactly. My DD is not 16 yet but God this series is so sick I would advise my DD to not watch it until she's 30.

Offred is a handmaiden because her husband was a divorcè and their relationship started as an affair.
The handmaids have all proven their fertility before.
The book is my favourite of all time and the series just didn't work for me.

Well she actually became one because she and her partner tried to escape to Canada and were caught. Her daughter was forcibly adopted by a Gilead couple , but because she was known to be fertile she was sent to the Red Centre which produces the Handmaids.

Why on earth would you start it now. It’s clearly the new lost. Never ending for moneys sake!

This.

Despite the outlandish premise, it's interesting and watchable to begin with, but from season 3 onwards it just becomes more and more ridiculous to the point whereby it's impossible to swallow due to the total implausibility of the decisions the characters take, the contradictory behaviours, and repeating tropes.

I made it through season 5 through sheer bloody mindedness, but it was utterly predictable, overly-emotional cringeworthy tripe. I won't bother with the final season.

I’m very liberal and wouldn’t let my 16dd watch it. Some of the scenes are explicit and some extremely brutal. It makes for very disturbing tv sometimes which is brilliant but I’d worry that my teenage dd would internalise, overthink and analyse it too much (which is what teenagers do).

Surely a 16 yr old can decide what they want to watch?

I read the book at nearly 17, my dad gave it to me.

Nothing to add except same!! I gave up after 3/4 episodes because I had no idea what was going on

I listened to the book on audiobooks. I wouldn’t watch the film and I unless you like watching rape scenes I wouldn’t recommend anyone else watching it either. I’m haunted by it.

I thought the book was very good but I'm afraid I just didn't get on with the TV series: for me, it wasn't a patch on the book.

I highly recommend that you read the book!

New time dystopia where the females are used for their fertility. Sorry did I say new time?
