Anyone else watching this? On episode 3 now and feeling so sorry for this woman!

I thought this show was really good, I was pretty much captivated within 10 mins.

Her lawyer wasn’t very good though, her kids seemed to turn out well!

I watched all episodes. A whole range of thoughts about it, and I would like to think that the same sentence - or trial experience - would not happen in today's world. It was very much of it's time.

Such proof positive that childhood experiences can form a character, for both Sally, and for Ray. And, also SO sadly, that both Shanita and John have had difficulties as well. My heart was breaking for them.

I very much warmed to Sally from the start.

I very much warmed to Sally from the start.

It felt like so much gaslighting - even in Court - before it was truly recognised as a "thing".
I know it's not on the same level , but having re-watched "Monster" (Aileen Wournos) the other night, there just seemed to be some echoes of victim blaming and shaming, and coming from a bad start and repeated behaviour and so on.

I feel so frustrated that within the trial, the defence didn’t challenge the prosecution’s use of the terms “strong woman”, and the connotations that went with that. It’s almost like they thought; a woman can’t be strong and abused.

Really sad to also see the PTSD that has come from these experiences.

Also 100% with you on victim blaming

It did seem that some of the forensic evidence - number of shots, reloading/which room and so on supported the prosecution's case and the jury seemed to have a very clear-cut idea of what happened and why. But they really did seem to view her through a distorted (biased?) lens, based on the persona she had created, when that was just a fraction of her personalty, and her childhood experiences, and low expectations from men whilst investing so much in them heresel, and tolerating so much ---- all led to the terrible events that rippled right through her childrens' lives, as well, of course, as her own.

LoveMyPiano · 06/11/2022 23:17

And of course, she might have been strong - but she was also only 5'3" tall. Willing to bet Ray outweighed her - also his method of choice was choing - which takes no time at all to put someone in a position of being unable to fight back.

It sounded a very toxic relationship, those poor kids.

LoveMyPiano · 06/11/2022 23:24

choking

The children (where was their bio dad I wonder....) - I felt so sad , and also horrified, when John was describing the cruelty they suffered. Their subsequent difficulties are 100% understandable.

I warmed to her too. I can understand her aggressive behaviour to others when her DC were threatened. I think she struggled with the fact she couldn't protect them at home so took any opportunity when she felt able to defend them against people she felt stronger than.

It's all just so sad all round.

We watched it this weekend, found it fascinating. The first episode seemed quite clear cut then episode two turned it all on its head!

I really felt for her kids. Interesting (and sad) that they both ended up in the military and with PTSD.

The prosecution lawyer was utterly repellent. Had some very misogynistic views on women…

Howandwhy · 11/05/2025 18:37

She let her kids down, allowing this man to be her priority and beat and threaten her kids. I think she planned to kill him when he didn't show up for valentine's day. She knew he was with the other woman. She should have been angry enough to shoot him when he beat up her kids.
