What a patronising crock of shit.

He's a middle aged man FFS, if he says
" veggies" one more time my head will explode.

I thought it was alright.

He did seem quite excitable.

I learnt how to make rice in the microwave from today’s episode.

Daisypod · 31/10/2022 21:42

I learnt quite a lot tonight 🤷‍♀️ very informative and didn't find it patronising.

Rummikub · 31/10/2022 21:58

I also liked the tough lasagne ides.

I think a lot of cookery shows have gadgets or expensive ingredients. So I did forgive him the use of curry powder in the veg curry. It made me chuckle though whenever he mentioned the ‘humble’ box grater.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 31/10/2022 22:00

Really enjoyed it. Will definitely be trying out the frozen veg lasagne, looked delicious.

TheFlis12345 · 31/10/2022 22:02

I thought there were some useful ideas and information in it.

Blueberrycreampie · 31/10/2022 22:03

He was quite annoying but it doesn't take away from the fact he cooked some tasty, healthy meals cheaply and used the microwave instead of the oven, hob etc for some of them. Might try that pudding when the weather gets colder👍

meateatingveggie · 31/10/2022 22:03

Poor bloke can't win. If he cooked fancy stuff with fillet steak he'd be shot down, if he tries to be helpful he is too.

Some things aren't new ( my mum wouldn't have ever considered putting the oven on for one thing) but he had some good ideas

gogohmm · 31/10/2022 22:10

It's just how he talks, always has. His recipes vary in cost depending on the series but they are generally easy enough for the more novice cook and the ingredients lists don't tend to be too long. Last week it wasn't budget recipes per se but still pretty affordable compared to many cooking shows and everything can be bought in a fairly small supermarket usually.

By the way I used curry powder tonight - Lidl's brand, makes a tasty meal

cobblers123 · 31/10/2022 22:24

I really liked the recipes but his constant use of "beautiful, kiss of oil, veggies" and the worst one of all bloody "gnarly" are very irritating over the course of the episode.

I'll still watch next week though.

Yes that was what I found most annoying; his overuse of beautiful etc!

Not sure people have the necessary pots and pans, even the cups for making the sponges in a microwave might be an issue, for some. Some people dont have pan lids, for example. It's a tough one for him, putting a spin on poverty and making out everything is fine and dandy. When really, this is (supposedly) aimed at families, who have sod all.

Once people have stocked up on the garlic, the dried herbs, various other bits and pieces, stuff will be left over, for other meals, it's just that initial outlay.

He used Parmesan, he used balsamic vinegar, yes people can use cheaper, shit alternatives, but the outcome is is not the same.

Overall though, the bloke done ok, I liked the 50/50 bolognese, and the meatloaf, might try it, always found pork mince to be a bit rubbish, taste wise, his meatloaf looked moreish.

Nolongera · 01/11/2022 09:33

It's possible I lost objectivity the 18th time he said " veggies". 😉

OP posts:
BodenCardiganNot · 01/11/2022 09:35

He used Parmesan

He also used cheddar, saying it works really well in dishes where cheese is nice.

PNDoula · 11/11/2022 12:54

I made the meatloaf…..never had it before

It was actually really nice (although my children weren’t quite as keen ☺️)

TheChosenTwo · 11/11/2022 16:43

He always gets a lot of stick on here but I have always liked a few of his recipes here and there, i think we had a collection of his books (to be fair we did get rid of pretty much every recipe book we owned a good whole back now, so much is available online, i snipped out and saved favourites from books), and I always remember him using those exaggerated words in the early naked chef stuff so at least he’s consistent!
I haven’t watched him on telly for years but if he’s trying to come up with meals to feed people for £1 and people are watching - there’s obviously a demand for it!

Kite22 · 11/11/2022 17:51

Once you've decided you don't like someone, then everything they say grates see what I did there?

However, I think it was a great programme.

Tasty looking, easy to make things that don't need fancy ingredients or fancy gadgets. The meatloaf looked really tasty - not something I've ever tried.

Lots of tips too - some of which were obvious to me, but clearly aren't to everyone, and some others that might be new to people.

As someone else said, he can't win can he ?

ChocolatSouris · 11/11/2022 17:53

I’ve just watched it while cooking tea. I thought it was a really good programme and I’ve taken a photo of each recipe ingredient list. Going to try them all.

darisdet · 11/11/2022 17:59

Sounds interesting. Must have a look.

alphasox · 11/11/2022 18:06

He’s a telly personality - that exaggerated way of talking is his brand (he doesn’t talk like that all the time!) I agree it’s not for me either, so I choose not to watch his programmes, but I have used his recipes before.

Clymene · 11/11/2022 18:08

He's really good and can actually cook unlike that utter charlatan Jack Monroe

darisdet · 11/11/2022 18:09

I was just wondering if Jack had mentioned this new show. I remember she's been less than pleased before about him doing things related to her niche.
