Did anyone watch it this evening? It was awful, I work in mental health and couldn’t believe so many staff could behave like that!

It was horrendous. How can people treat other vulnerable people so poorly. There is some cruel people in this world

Rainbowcat99 · 28/09/2022 22:44

Yes! It was painful to watch. I work with similar people when they're younger. It's challenging but the way those patients were treated made me feel ill. There were so many situations were a situation could have been managed well and had a completely different outcome.
A lot of the staff need sacking but I honestly think a few should face charges.

GrazingSheep · 28/09/2022 22:45

Awful.

x2boys · 29/09/2022 11:41

I haven't seen it yet but i used to work for that trust and had a placement at the Edenfield centre as a student nurse many years ago it was a grim place .

Runningnewbie · 29/09/2022 12:21

Can’t believe there’s not more of an uproar to be honest in the press!

Well that was a hard watch I have to say, a couple of insights i have ,the Edenfield itself is a mile away from the rest of the hospital down a long lane ,I think it's probably a very insular place ,
Some of those staff though need sacking they were just cruel.

robertpaulson · 29/09/2022 13:07

Watching now it's horrible.

robertpaulson · 29/09/2022 13:08

Why is everyone so overweight too

x2boys · 29/09/2022 13:32

robertpaulson · 29/09/2022 13:07

Watching now it's horrible.

I was an overweight mental health nurse, still am overweight but not a nurse anymore ,for me it was shift work ,not having set meal times ,rushing to eat something ,and it's often unhealthy ,grabbing something quick And easy rather than healthy

x2boys · 29/09/2022 14:13

I hope when there is an investigation they investigate it fully and not just sack a few junior members of staff and say lessons have been learned ,clearly something has gone very wrong here and managers need to be held accountable too,and ime having worked in a different part of the trust ,managers just didn't care about staff and working conditions, as long as everything on the surface was fine
Thats not an excuse though for the actions of the staff.

Runningnewbie · 29/09/2022 14:25

@x2boys i just can’t imagine how this kind of behaviour wasn’t challenged! Such an awful toxic culture, how on earth did management not see it?!

They must have known surely?
If it was one ward with toxic staff ,then maybe not but it seemed rife across the unit the police are involved now so hopefully they can't just sweep it under the carpet
Something similar happened at Ashworth years ago ,I'll have to have a read up as I have forgotten the details .

Rainbowcat99 · 29/09/2022 17:17

@x2boys a close friend is very senior in that trust. She's not directly involved but says the executive team are devastated. They're taking it very seriously and they've all been told that the investigation takes priority over any other work they have. So fingers crossed that they'll do a proper job and things will improve for those poor patients.

I really hope so .

PauliesWalnuts · 29/09/2022 17:24

I have a family member working there - admin, not clinical, and not near the service users. It’s being taken v seriously (and is all over the local paper). It’s shocking.

x2boys · 29/09/2022 17:30

Honestly it's so sad I worked in acute mental health for years ,some staff do like the power, and were not great with patients but I have never seen staff so obviously cruel .

CoffeeWithCheese · 29/09/2022 21:08

I was horrified - I work in a different mental health trust and we've had HOW many of these fucking incidents now? Winterbourne, Whorlton Hall (I will have spelt that wrong)... now this - and still haven't fucking learnt the lessons about treating people like human beings who, however challenging they are (and boy do we have some challenging behaviours), are someone's very loved baby. I always try to keep that in my mind when I'm dealing with a difficult situation.

x2boys · 29/09/2022 21:13

The one thing I didn't agree with in the documentary was them making a thing about patients going AWOL whilst on ground leave ,i had a placement at Edenfield in the mid,90,s so a long time ago I escorted a few patients up to tesco too, leave is granted via the home office as its a secure unit ,if a patient had decided to run off on Me I would nt have put myself at risk and tried to stop them I would have let them go and contacted the ward ASAP to let the police know.

Its so awful I'm horrified as an ex mental health nurse but also the parent of a severely autistic child, who could one day end up at the mercy of " supposedly " caring people it's sickening .

Runningnewbie · 29/09/2022 21:33

I agree about the leave, that didn’t really need highlighting, but the actual abuse with that support worker pinching the patient was just shocking. And the awful nurses and how they spoke to patients 😢

OP posts:
DontKeepTheFaith · 29/09/2022 21:41

I watched it, really disturbing stuff.

I’ve been an RMN more than 20years and have never seen anything like the depravity and cruelty. It upset me a lot.

Im a Ward Manager and consider myself entirely responsible for what goes on on my ward. The senior managers of this hospital are culpable. Their job is to know what’s going on and to maintain standards.

FloorCushion · 29/09/2022 21:43

Utterly shocking and heartbreaking. Absolutely disgraceful health care.
Im sad and frustrated that the junior nurses and health care workers filmed will be the ones absolutely vilified for their behaviour, however that sort of shit care only happens within a culture of toxic and negligent management. No mention of names of senior medical, nursing or management in the documentary and that’s where the investigation should be looking at, as much as the staff that were filmed. Easy to focus anger at individuals, many who will be untrained and (as the film showed) unsupervised. The people who should be ultimately severely punished are all higher up the chain of command for allowing such behaviour to continue and flourish. Where is the fucking governance on those wards?

sadly, my experience of such things is the higher ups are Teflon coated and will just move along into another highly paid NHS management post, whereas those nurse will likely be losing their PINs.

Yes that's awful hopefully they can identify staff? ( shouldn't be too hard ) and charge them with assault .

Yep that's my point whilst the HCA,s and junior staff nurses have acted appallingly, where have they learnt this from?it's rotten from the top and needs a through investigation.

As a parent of a young person who was sectioned and it was such a traumatic experience I can't watch this type of thing anymore. It just brings back the fear of leaving my small child at the mercy of strangers with no escape.
