New drama starts sun and mon for 1&2

then 3&4 following week on Sunday and Monday

the lovely Nicola Walker and Sean Bean

The acclaimed British actors play Ian and Emma, who are a couple navigating the ups and downs of their 30-year partnership.

They are parents to Jessica (Chantelle Alle) and are dealing with their fears and insecurities as the drama explores the risks and gifts of a long-term relationship.

Marriage on BBC1 sees married couple Ian (Sean Bean) and Emma (Nicola Walker) negotiate the ups and downs of their 27-year marriage. They've dealt with all the insecurities, the ambiguities, the hopes and the fears that are part of all marriages. The drama explores the risks and the gifts of a long-term intimate relationship.

When we first meet married couple Ian and Emma they’re in a Spanish airport returning from a lovely holiday — and bickering over a baked potato! By the time they’re on the plane it’s a full blown argument, setting the scene for what’s to come in this four-part series.

looks good

It was pretty much what I expected after reading the previews. I found it intriguing and agree that there is a lot still to come out- however slowly and obliquely.

Jojoanna · 14/08/2022 22:46

I enjoyed it ,, weirdly

Onacuctustree · 14/08/2022 22:46

I am both interested and bored.
Bits were so true to life.
The gym stuff was painful.
I will watch the next one.
But anymore, younger person catching the eye of one of the characters... Boring.

Welshgal78 · 14/08/2022 22:50

I'm finding it quite slow, boring and confusing on parts

Mammyloveswine · 14/08/2022 22:52

What is the awful music "to the left.." Jesus

What is the awful music "to the left.." Jesus

Part of a composition by Caroline Shaw. She won the Pulitzer prize for music for it.

Not my taste, but it's certainly original.

Lessofallthisunpleasantness · 14/08/2022 22:58

Painful, awkward, boring, depressing. Too close to real life. Like listening on the neighbours or something always wondering if you might hear something interesting, but you don't.

They obviously lost a son. I was surprised the daughter was black so obviously adopted or fostered. So maybe the son died as a baby then they adopted.

FunkedUp · 14/08/2022 22:59

I have chronic insomnia, I'll probably be up at about 1-30am, start the 2nd ep on iPlayer and be asleep by 1-42

cakeorwine · 14/08/2022 23:01

Well the Daily Mail and the Guardian loved it.

The Daily Mail were pleased because it portrays 'ordinary working people' - the backbone of Middle England in a normal house going on holiday to Spain.

SapphosRock · 14/08/2022 23:02

Surprised at the negative comments!

Slow start but then I think it got really good, and left us with lots of questions.

Has Emma had an affair with her boss? Why was that meeting so weird?

What was the awkward leisure Centre conversation about? Was it just clumsy flirting or something more?

What happened to Maxine (leisure centre girl) in the pub toilets? We never found out?

Have the couple lost a child?

Why is the couple's daughter black and they are white? And she called the Dad 'Ian' so he must be her stepdad.

The weird, controlling boyfriend was intriguing. Why does Jessica have terrible taste in men?

Definitely has potential.

God its depressing its like its written by someone who only imagines what life is like after 27 years of marriage. I've been married 24 and christ I'd slit my wrist if we lived and talked like that every day 🙄

😂🤣 This 👆 I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt until I’ve watched episode 2. I wonder if the daughter and controlling partner story line might make it “buck-up” as Sean Bean might say!

DianaBarry5 · 14/08/2022 23:12

It felt like they were improvising but couldn't think of what to say!

bluebellinthewood · 14/08/2022 23:16

Very disappointed as they are both great actors. Slow and plodding and a waste of an hour imo.

Darkness22 · 14/08/2022 23:17

Yes, I don't want to judge until episode 2. I'm intrigued at all the tension. Yes, it's morr like a play. Wardrobe was great but depressing.

purplewolfie · 14/08/2022 23:18

It felt mean spirited. Like a groucho club member sneering at the suburbs.

Lunaduckdrop · 14/08/2022 23:20

Strangely cringe-worthy and patronising. Felt like ordinary people being observed by someone who considered themself "better". Many loose ends- dead baby, girl in the loo, creepy boyfriend, poorly communicating couple, hostile father, bloke hiding away There are only 4 episodes so a lot of stuff to be revealed. Let's hope it is and we don't have to watch the dishwasher being stacked again!

Magpie18 · 14/08/2022 23:22

I love both main actors, but so far - dire. I’ll persevere for one more (or part of) hope it picks up

Upwiththelark76 · 14/08/2022 23:23

Boring 🥱. Switched off . Thank god I’m not married .

UrsulaPandress · 14/08/2022 23:24

😂

LemongrassLollipop · 14/08/2022 23:25

I was drawn in by the actors, usually love everything they are in but this was so dull.
Meant to watch wow but must have fallen asleep
Not sure whether to waste another hour on this tomorrow. Rubbish.

UrsulaPandress · 14/08/2022 23:25

Sorry. That was meant to be a response to the poster who asked if their daughter was adopted.

LemongrassLollipop · 14/08/2022 23:25

Ep 2, not wow

midsomermurderess · 14/08/2022 23:30

To the poster writing that it felt like someone looking down on the ordinary characters. The writer isn’t posh, he comes from a pretty ordinary background and he has spoken about writing about the lives, the world he knows, rarely seen much now on tv.

I'm on the fence. Intrigued enough to watch episode 2, but not until tomorrow. If I love something I always binge but I felt relieved when the episode finished. Hard work to watch and hope it gets easier
