We are in Melbourne! We have been for nearly a week. We flew out - unexpectedly via Baku in Azerbaijan for a medical emergency (walked off, though, so presumably an okay prognosis,) so we had the quickest transfer possible in KL. Our bags didn't transfer with us to Melbourne, and it was two days before they caught up with us.
Today, we got the number 75 tram to South Vermont and walked round to Pin Oak Court. It is smaller than I expected- they seemed to have way more room for cars and stuff. But I liked that the trees round the street are fruiting lemons. Then we got back to the tram just as the rain started.
Otherwise, we have been very touristy - Great Ocean Road (it rained, even the bit that wasn't temperate rainforest in the Otway area,) also Phillip Island, a wildlife sanctuary and then the parade of little penguins up the beach at dusk. Also art galleries and museums and a new silk jacket.
Food has been fun - my sister is coeliac, so that has been challenging at times, but very good generally when we have ou d places that are happy with gluten free. Had a great night out with a former colleague of mine (we worked together in England - he moved back some years ago.)
Hotel is fine, very comfortable and fab breakfast.
Half mast flags everywhere, and buildings that have decorative lighting outside have gone for purple. TV full of black-clothed news presenters, so we know all about King Charles III being proclaimed King, the Queen's last journey from Balmoral, the prime minister here signing the Australian book of condolence, etc. It's almost like having the BBC.
So a few more days and then we fly back Friday.
