Netflix has made Jane Austen boring. I can't get on board with it. It feels slow. I think the lead guy is really wooden too.

Wentworth was so utterly unattractive it was impossible to believe anyone would spend years pining over him.

CallmeMrsPricklepants · 16/07/2022 19:10

Oh poo. I was so looking forward to this! I'm not sure if I'll bother based on these reviews. I loved the 1995 version and liked the Rupert penry Jones version.

redfairy · 16/07/2022 20:14

What an abomination. I didn't particularly like the latest Emma but it was streets ahead of this drivel.

I tried to watch this steaming pile last night. I turned it off after 15 mins. When 'Anne' was behaving like an idiot with verbal diarrhoea at her dinner with Wentworth. Eek!
Loved the 1995 and 2007 version and I'm the proud owner of a dog eared copy of the book.
Utter rubbish!

Oh god yes! When SHE said Charles wanted to marry her first. Toe curling.

I've been off sick this week, and found this with delight...... which very quickly turned to "Austen would be turning in her grave".

Absolute tosh. Not even the usually sublime Dakota Johnson could save that..... and her accent kept changing which annoyed me even more than the screen play.

She was utterly stunning (which made it ridiculous when they commented she would be a 6 in Bath.) I didn't realise she was beautiful in things I've seen before. But again too beautiful to be Anne.

Ohjustboreoff · 16/07/2022 21:02

@keeprunningupthathill yes toe curling is the perfect way to describe that scene. I turned it off right after that!

Anothernamechangeplease · 16/07/2022 21:39

Fuck, that was bad! I watched it to the end out of stubbornness more than anything, but that's 2 hours of my life that I'm never going to get back!

They completely butchered it! They didn't seem to understand the characters, the plot. It was awful! And so dull. No chemistry between Anne and Wentworth at all.

Shocking!!

jay55 · 16/07/2022 22:02

The hair drove me to distraction. I wanted to reach though the screen with a hairbrush.

Mary was great fun.

thefemaleJoshLyman · 16/07/2022 22:10

I'm an Austen fan and really enjoyed this, thought it tried to give the humour of Austen. I also love the Amanda Root version. I love Henry Golding, which probably helps. Thought Wentworth looked like Andrew Lincoln.

I am amazed that anyone who loves Austen could actually enjoy this. Where was the humour? I didn't find it funny!

Did you not find Anne's complete character transplant disturbing? I could probably have got on board with the nonsense about exes etc if they had stuck to the original characters and the spirit of the book, but it was a million miles away. So disappointing!

What?! No. Definitely not Austen humour. She was much more subtle and witty. This was an awful attempt at Bridget Jones meets Fleabag humour Sad (Don't get me wrong, I loved Fleabag and enjoyed Bridget Jones, but this was a poor imitation to say the least!)

JenniferAlisonPhilipaSue · 17/07/2022 08:19

I hated everything about it.

The awful dialogue, the horrible wallpaper, lady russell as a sex tourist,, the innuendo, the woke casting (I like my Austen dramas to be authentic so sue me), the wooden acting, the fourth wall

I agree, it was Austen meets Fleabag

BluesandClues · 17/07/2022 08:38

It was truly awful, yet watchable at the same time (if only you leave your brain in some unknown location so it doesn’t know what you’re doing).

florentina1 · 17/07/2022 09:36

I thought the casting was inspired with regard to the Elliot family. Such a shame they had to spout such drivel. I loved Elizabeth and Mary, the only two that seemed true to character.

kavalkada · 17/07/2022 14:49

I had watched first third (started before I had to go to work) and so far I ... like it.
But I like it as something that has nothing with Jane Austen, nothing with regency England, nothing with character of Anne Eliott.

Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds adaptation is my favorite (I hated the one with Sally Hawkins), but this has nothing to do with Austen.

But as far as I can see, nobody wanted to do Austen, just monetize on her name, which they did.

I wished they picked somebody more handsome for captain Wentworth, it is really hard to think why would somebody love him for years.

Considering the success of Bridgerton, I suppose there is more adaptations like this on the way.

Signoramarella · 17/07/2022 14:57

So looking forward to this, but, it was painful and shit! Gave up after half an hour!!

BeggyMitchell · 17/07/2022 15:01

I'm an Austen-whore Blush in that I will generally accept and like anything that's based on her much beloved (to me) novels but I'm sorry that is NOT Captain Wentworth, my suspended beliefs have limits apparently.

I think Rupert Penry-Jones ruined me that way we'll not that way.

SenecaFallsRedux · 17/07/2022 15:16

I watched about 30 minutes of it and gave up. They were obviously trying to Bridgertonize it (and I love Bridgerton), but it was a massive fail (at least the 30 minutes I watched.)

As for the 1995 version, I've said it before and I'll say it again, an actor signing on to play Captain Wentworth after Ciaran Hinds's portrayal is just completely superfluous to requirements. Hinds is the definitive Wentworth. For those of you who haven't seen the 1995 version, I envy you your first time with it.

BeggyMitchell · 17/07/2022 15:45

I've seen all of them, Ciaran was too craggy and stilted for me, mind you I was v young 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Seemslikeaniceday · 17/07/2022 15:50

Well you warned me, I now need to watch the 1995 version asap to remove the memory.

ThorsBedazzler · 17/07/2022 22:47

I enjoyed it - loved Mary and thought Wentworth was lovely.

The reason I think I enjoyed is is because I didn't think of it as an adaptation of Persuasion, more of a made up "what would Jane Austen do" type thought experiment.

They did miss out so many storylines. So many. Which was a shame until I reminded myself it was just a pretend austen type story, not really an adaptation.

JanuaryKeepMe · 18/07/2022 17:24

The 1995 version is the best but my God Rupert Penry-Jones is the perfect Wentworth and therefore the 2007 version holds my heart for that reason alone.

I confess I hated the new Netflix version when she started swigging from a wine bottle and then when she dropped her knickers for a wee I was out. I just cannot continue to watch it. Also I don't fancy Wentworth so not worth watching for that part alone. I feel very shallow admitting that but alas it is true.

Crazycrazylady · 18/07/2022 20:19

I'm a huge Austen fan and don't think I've ever watched a adaption I did t enjoy Until this.. did they even read the book, who was that person ? It absolutely wasn't any relation to a Jane Austen heroine .

FeliciaFancybottom · 16/07/2022 19:02

This. It's rare a film has me rooting for the protagonist to shag the 'baddie' but it's the sure sign of a terrible film with awful casting. See: Titanic. I would have shagged Billy Zane any day before Leo. And Henry Golding is vastly more attractive in every way than Cosmo Jarvis, who looks permanently slightly confused and moist.

ProseccoStorm · 18/07/2022 20:26

I quite enjoyed it.

I saw it as 'inspired by' rather than a faithful adaptation. It was fluffy and fun, the acting was decent and the soundtrack was great.

Not a 'great' but watchable and enjoyable.
