MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #34): July brings internal conflict. Make the most of sunshine and the long days, or keep on top of your kdrama? 🤔

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We sometimes resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or favourite actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

I take it it SSK is top of both your ‘free pass’ lists pol and FedUp? What a great start to my Friday morning. 🙌

I think I am going to have to re-do my list. It hasn't been updated since I started watching kdramas.

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 19/08/2022 15:02

Park Eun-bin is a great wee actress.

I wanted to share my new Ahjumma sized Kimchi container and Kimchi stash that I got from Mr Kimchi! I feel like a proper 엄마 now 😍

I've just signed up for a short online course on Gender, family and social change in contemporary SK (Yonsei University).
Covid lockdown and the resulting introduction to kdrama has a lot to answer for.

On our general theme of all things Koean:

‘Shut up,’ Kim’s sister tells South Korean president.

That is mental 🤣

I'd also like to know more about your course Migs!

Here it is. £40 if you want a certificate but free otherwise with full access to course materials. SK course

MigsandTiggs · 20/08/2022 09:43

I’m also interested in many things Chinese, except for cdrama (so far) and last year did an OU international relations one on America/China conflict.

Rowdythree · 20/08/2022 09:44

That sounds really interesting Migs, thanks for sharing

This sounds fascinating and timely. If you can point me in the right direction, I’m interested.

If it’s not too outing, is anyone here able to explain whether or not their personal knowledge of Chinese/Japanese/Korean or SE Asian culture but Western upbringing has helped their understanding of modern SK culture?
I’m honestly thinking of going back to university if I can find a suitable course compatible with my interests.

boatyardblues · 20/08/2022 13:21

I’ve discovered A Cat’s Tale on Manta. It’s brilliant. It swipes right rather than scrolling, so it’s more like a picture book. I’ve attached a screen shot of the description because it wouldn’t let me C&P. It’s like Animal Farm meets Midsomer Murders. 😂

The power of the Korean wave. Even Doja Cat is using the pink Kahi balm in her Vegas video. 😀

boatyardblues · 21/08/2022 10:51

I loved last night’s Alchemy of Souls. It felt like everything kicked up a notch. I am hoping the last 3 episodes are satisfactory in tying up enough loose ends not to enrage me. The Netflix second season is a US-originated pox on kdrama. I wish they wouldn’t do it (though I loved S2 of Kingdom).

Yes I am half disappointed in the decision to 2nd series EAW. It was dead on as is.

Kingdom is the exception of course because the story has so much breadth it can sustain several series. In two minds about Squid Game.
