Watching on a delayed start... Surely Black Forest Gateau was big in the 1970s not the 1980s???

My ancient MIL says she never saw that dry looking cake that the programme said was the pudding of the 1950's.
I think the trifle will be quite easy to replicate using pre-made bits so that will encourage me to give it a go at least. I don't usually like trifle though and thought the crown cake really looked the part.

I'd make that dubonnet jam though

I'm disappointed They said ( on the one show with people 'in the know ' ) that the Queen likes chocolate and yet this is a trifle..
Plus it looks a bit meh.

I was rooting for the rhubarb and chocolate one to win but I thought they all looked amazing. None of them were particularly novice-friendly though.

Does anyone know when they are going to release the recipe?

I would like to make it, not necessarily for the jubilee.

The full recipe (very long) for the trifle is already on the Telegraph app with a cheat sheet of buying everything apart from making the Swiss roll and mandarin coulis.
I thought some of the other options looked to complicated to make, esp the rhubarb.

The rose cake and the bundt crown one both looked amazing but I think would have been hard for most people to make at home. Also slightly challenging flavours and ingredients for the rose one, and the bundt needed a special mould, I would have been awkward if the nation's stocks sold out and not everyone who wanted to could make it for their party.

I liked the lemon trifle, but was slightly suprised it won, it didn't seem massively ground breaking or unusual. But I would eat it definitely, and could make it, and I think most people could.

Also: thyme has No Place in a pudding.

TooBigForMyBoots · 13/05/2022 01:04

The queen loves lemon desserts.

sashagabadon · 13/05/2022 07:35

I think the requirement for a cake mould is what did it for the crown cake and I think the millions of flowers is what did it for the flower cake. Alternative universe if either had won, fights in Waitrose for the last crown cake mould as they didn’t order enough and sad face children everywhere as they can’t get to make it followed by loads of really crap versions on social media OR sad face gardeners as half their flower display had been nicked overnight by neighbours to stick on their cakes then said gardeners seeing their flowers on said cake on jubilee day and a massive street falling out and punch up. Daily mail would have loved it either way 😂

it says preparation time over 2 hours. Of course 🙄
I may use Cointreau to the soak the sponge.

Very disappointed with that one winning! Loved the flowery cake (but hard to replicate) and loved the Crown Cake too. That trifle was just a big dollop though really. And very difficult to recreate if vegan or dairy free as no really good whip cream vegan alternatives out there. You'd also better hope it's not a hot day as that cream sitting in the sun.... 🤢 Ah well, no street party here anyway!

I think elmlea plant is a pretty successful whippable cream substitute, have you tried it?
