The Great House Giveaway Series 3

Love this! Any watchers?

It's so hard for them to make a profit with the interest they end up paying for the loan. It just goes to show how difficult it is to make money flipping houses unless you have your own cold hard cash, contacts and a decent level of skill.

Last week there were some great pairs and some half decent profits, but yesterday's pair, although they looked excellent on paper and started off so well with getting a lot of freebies, spent a ridiculous amount of money and ran out of time - incurring more fees!

I do think six months isn't enough though. They have to do the whole renovation AND sell within that time. These people have full time jobs and lives. Just getting trades organised can take weeks. Nine months would be more realistic and give the extra time for finishing off properly, staging etc.

Yesterday's pair (the plasterer and the banker) were a shambles! I cannot see where the £20k overspend on the original £10k budget actually went and it was never properly explained.

Playplayaway · 11/05/2022 22:31

It got worse today!

I think that one was the worst outcome I’ve ever seen! Shocking, taking a sledgehammer to all the walls!🙈

rosegoldwatcher · 12/05/2022 18:10

You would think that, when one of the pair drops out before they have even started, Ch4 would draft in another participant. I'm sure they did that in one of the earlier series.
A second person might have been able to dissuade him from such wanton destruction.

I'm watching this series too, but haven't watched this episode yet.......it's recorded. However i do agree with you on people dropping out, or not pulling their weight due to work commitments. It's happened a fair few times and they should have spares in the wings ready to zoom in and help with the mountain of work that such houses need .

Playplayaway · 17/05/2022 12:07

The main drop outs seem to be the ones with trades. If a big job comes up that they can earn guaranteed money for I don't blame them. Especially if their partner doesn't bring many skills themselves so the person with the trade is having to pull in favours all over the place. Yesterday's pair worked flat out for 6 months for 8k each. A decent plasterer (BIL is one) could earn more than that doing over time working weekends. Sometimes the project isn't that close to where they live either, so evenings aren't always possible. There was one guy in the past series who lived over a hour drive away - that must get very tedious very quickly.

The pair, yesterday, the structural engineer and the painter/decorator, could not have worked better or smarter. The final result was impeccable; it even impressed the estate agent. And yet, presumably because of the time limit, the presenter accepted an offer of £20k below asking!
The pair went away with less than £5k each for so much hard work.

I've remembered why I gave up watching series 2 halfway through!

Oh my god yeah ! This guy was awful
how was he allowed to have such a large overspend

the tv production crew must be mad - that one episode basically cost them over 40 k just in the loss on the house !
He was idiotic ripping it all down - how could he have no concept of the costs of putting that back together again !

Playplayaway · 18/05/2022 13:08

Yes they did a cracking job on the bungalow and it was nice to see a lot of attention paid to the outside as it was lovely and a huge selling point.

I think the blue kitchen, the funky tiles in the bathroom and the odd indoor bifolds may have put buyers off though as it's not cheap or easy to change those. Shame she chose the bright blue paint as white would probably give a cleaner finish and it wouldn't look so obvious that it's a refurbed kitchen. The wrapping looked ok but again, I think white would have looked a lot cleaner.

However 5k each was an absolute joke for the improvements they made. They looked really gutted. I'm sure they'd have nearer the asking price if they had a bit more time.

Oh, I’ve seen it, Andrew landscaped my garden last year so I specifically wanted to watch this one.

rosegoldwatcher · 18/05/2022 19:22

Ok - well - the two men were excellent; skiiled, professional, put in the hours. No dramas, even when the building inspector demanded a whole heap of remedial work on the beams. (Oh yes SIMON - should this have been picked up in the survey that you insist everyone gets before they bid on a property at auction?!)

The house and garden looked fabulous when they had finished. Again, an asking price of offers in excess of £200K resulted in a selling price far lower and very little profit for the workers. I felt so disappointed for them.

Playplayaway · 18/05/2022 19:31

Cracking job again today. Both lovely blokes and very hardworking.

So the £195k sale fell through but there was no update which was annoying. The whole point of the show is the final profit/loss.

OP posts:
rosegoldwatcher · 18/05/2022 19:40

The sale fell through? I missed that bit.

I would assume, then, that it went back to auction and was sold for a pittance.

I wonder if prospective buyers of the improved property sometimes get a 'heads-up' from the EA; "Channel 4 need to sell this in two weeks time - why not make them a cheeky offer."

Essexexile · 18/05/2022 19:40

I was really impressed with Andrew & Michael today, they did a great job. I know what a hard worker Andrew is, he did my entire garden on his own and he did a fantastic job.
I was also very disappointed for them, I did know a few things ahead of the programme being shown today but I don’t know if the house has now sold. If it has, I hope they made a better profit because they deserve to.

Someone on twitter linked the rightmove listing. It said offers over £185k and waa sold STC. They probably ended up with barely anything.

Ooooh look, a similar show with George Clarke starts next Wednesday at 9pm channel 4. They have competing teams on this one. The Great House Giveaway meets The Apprentice!

I like his programmes, in the main. For some reason my DH thinks he is a knob so I always have to watch them on my own!

Have added the series to my recording list. Thank you.

This episode is annoying me
The one with the 55 year old housewife - moaning that it’s only her husband earning so can’t get money to buy their council house … don’t do this show - just get a bloody job
Shes clearly not got any kids at home - get a job and stop moaning you can’t afford stuff
I think this episode is going to make me grrr 🙈

Yes she was first described as a housewife but then Simon said she was a 'Painter & Decorator'.

Yes those interior bifold doors were weird !
They should have just left that area open.
Also agree regarding kitchen - to me a bungalow is a retirement property so colours should be kept neutral for the older generation buyer.

caringcarer · 20/05/2022 14:30

I just can't believe the young lad of 18 who was given this fantastic opportunity then dropped out before doing any work. And why oh why do contestants book holiday when they only have 6 months? I love to watch it though.

loislovesstewie · 20/05/2022 15:04

Any reason I shouldn't want a colourful kitchen now I am in my dotage?
