Anyone watching?

I'm only on the second episode and am finding the main character so unlikeable which is really making me sway towards believing him.
Which I guess is the idea but now I'm sat here contemplating my internal misogyny 😭

Not watching! Is it good? Might give it a go… i love it when you don’t know who to believe

heartofgoldcoins · 01/05/2022 19:47

Yes I'm enjoying it, I recommend!
Plus there are two seasons, I'm fed up of getting into a series and it stopping after one season lol

I'm also watching and am in the same boat as you. Dont believe her but don't know why unless its just I actually hate women.

Dont know why they wouldn't search his house though, if she's accused him of rape. Wouldn't they look for evidence?

burnoutbabe · 01/05/2022 22:17

This the one itv showed a few years ago? Or the Italian/Spanish remake?

Blipped · 01/05/2022 22:19

Think it’s the ITV one.

heartofgoldcoins · 01/05/2022 22:25

Yes, must be ITV one

I'm binging it so am on ep. 5 now. No spoilers but I still don't like her 🤣

I've watched it all this morning, (don't judge, period from hell!), just starting S2 now.

IcedPurple · 03/05/2022 19:50

The first few episodes were OK but it all went a bit bonkers, and not in a good way, after that.

Don't think I'll bother with Series Two.

midsomermurderess · 03/05/2022 20:37

I haven’t seen series 2, didn’t even know it was on Netflix, so thanks for the heads up. I find Joanne Froggatt a bit cold in much of what I’ve seen her in but she’s good in a show on Channel 5, The Commons.

SmileyClare · 03/05/2022 20:53

I watched this recently and agree Op the main character played by JF is hard to warm to!

I think the writers deliberately led the viewer to switch from believing him to believing her several times in the first few episodes. I thought that was quite a clever way to debate issues of consent. Agree with ppl, it went a bit bonkers after that! And become very unrealistic.

I do quite like watching flawed characters playing lead roles. I still don't particularly like JFs character development in series 2.

She seems to view her ex and her family and friends as vehicles to help her end goal, with no regard to their feelings or how their lives/jobs are seriously impacted by helping her.
Sorry if that sounds cryptic, I'm trying to avoid giving away spoilers.

carefullycourageous · 03/05/2022 20:58

IMO you are not supposed to like her - one of the most misogynistic things of all is that on some level some women deserve it, this programme is challenging because she isn't all lovely and nicey.

But also if that had happened to her in the way she describes it, why should she be lovely and nicey? Is she supposed to be crushed by it, would that make the viewer like her more?

carefullycourageous · 03/05/2022 21:00

It's a classic catch-22 - if she is manipulative enough to pursue 'justice' in the way she does, then surely she is manipulative enough to have made it all up.

Lol no. Process is to investigate the victim first - her entire life, her lifetime medical records, therapy records, phone content, social media every inch of her private life and every mistake she has ever made... and then maybe conduct a cursory investigation of the rapist. But not in the same intrusive depth as the victim.

Most victims don't get past the victim-blaming investigation of themselves ("do we think a jury pulled from a misogynistic victim-blaming culture will believe this victim? If not, no further action") to ever see their rapist even questioned much less arrested or having his house searched.

Sadly pretty accurate IMO Sad/Angry

SmileyClare · 03/05/2022 21:20

Wow yes really interesting points, particularly about society's perception of a rape "victim" or perpetrator and expectations of how a victim should react or behave.

Manipulative was the word I was looking for. I found JF's character manipulated those close to her in quite a cold way.

I think this was by the same writers of The Missing (also on Netflix) which I enjoyed.

carefullycourageous · 03/05/2022 21:39

I know I enjoyed The Liar because I still think about it quite often. Of course the plot is pretty mad but the central thread is good IMO.

I also liked JF in Angela Black recently on iplayer. I think her ability to be inscrutable is brilliant.

I also enjoyed The Missing.

thebellagio · 04/05/2022 14:25

I remember being gripped by Liar when it was shown on ITV. I agree, JF's character was very dislikable.

I loved the initla concept though, the idea of who is right/wrong, can it be rape in the eyes of one party and not in the eyes of the other. That's a hugely important societal conversation to have to help change behaviours and perceptions. Yet towards the end of series 1 and definitely in series 2, it changed to be something completely different.

Its really hard to discuss it without giving away spoilers.

DaisyQuakeJohnson · 04/05/2022 17:05

I've just watched the first season. I didn't like JF's character and I did question whether it was internalised misogyny or because she wasn't acting enough like a victim. I remember thinking she was a fab actress when she started in Corrie but ever since there is a detachment about her performances that I find difficult to engage with.
Like a PP, I thought this was going to be a serious exploration of consent but then it turned into something else entirely. It's almost like two different shows spliced together.
I can't decide if it's worth watching Season 2 or not. Is it?

ReallyReallyReallyAm · 05/06/2022 18:16

I'm halfway through episode 1, I had no idea what it was about, I did one of those Google's of 'What drama should I watch?'

I agree about the main character, I'm not sure about her so far. But I don't like him. Smarmy he comes across as, to me. Going to see her like that just made my blood boil. (Trying no to give away anything!)

Anybody else watching?

KittytheHare · 05/06/2022 20:45

Just finished watching the whole thing. I suppose the fact that I stuck with it says something, but it does become fairly fantastical.
I do find her unlikeable, possibly that's intentional? My other bugbear is the fact that she and her sister look nothing alike - one has non-existent lips and the other has hugely generous full lips!

ReallyReallyReallyAm · 05/06/2022 20:59

KittytheHare haha, I havn't noticed the lips!

I watched 3 episodes, I am really enjoying it so far. Man seems to be showing his true colours at the end of ep3 so maybe I was right!

ReallyReallyReallyAm · 09/06/2022 13:20

Just finished season one... What a disappointing ending! How frustrating.

ReallyReallyReallyAm · 16/06/2022 08:46

I've watched the whole thing now... It was ok. Season 1 better than 2, agree 2 becomes a bit far fetched & I'm still confused about a certain part even though I watched that part againGrin

maisieandvicks · 18/06/2022 08:15

There’s a Spanish version of this show? Anyone know where I can watch it? I enjoyed this version but also found the main character quite unlikeable too.

ReallyReallyReallyAm · 18/06/2022 09:07

maisieandvicks Lies and deceit is the Spanish version I think. It's available on Netflix (so I won't be able to watch it)

I would like to watch something kind of similar though If anybody knows of anything?
