So I binged this. Enjoyed the first few episodes more than the last few (six in all, 24 minutes each) but no subtitles sadly (I am old).
Both leads had chemistry. I know he is not everyone's cup of tea on here, but I like Steve Coogan a lot. There were some good lines but it lost its way a bit, when it went less for social commentary and more for rom-com. I did enjoy it though. Anyone else?

I've just finished watching this. I was the opposite of you - I came really close to turning off at numerous points during the first two episodes. I only stuck with it as I like Steve Coogan and Sarah Solemani and I don't like leaving things unfinished, particularly as it was only a very short series. I didn't enjoy the heavy social commentary or the scenes on the film set and I hated Bobby (up until she ran after Patrick at the end of episode two). It was only when Cameron and Bobby started to bond that I warmed to the show and I ended up really enjoying it. The Q&A session was great and I liked the rom commy bits towards the end.

What was the ending about by the way? I must have forgotten an earlier cake reference!

oh i wanted to see this?
no subtitles did you say?
that is a shame

I've watched the first two episodes and felt a bit cringed and confused 😳Are they piss taking or not?

BracedlnEndIessJanuary · 24/04/2022 20:48

It might be user error - I could not see S for subtitles on my screen but having had gogglebox with captions, when I rewatched an episode of Chivalry, I got subtitles...but when it went to the next episode they disappeared again.

Not piss-taking - whole premise is Coogan is an old-school lothario trying to navigate a new culture on the film set and in life, following #me too, cancel culture and wokeness. Solemani represents the new school, advocates feminism and protection on set (intimacy directors are the norm now).
In so doing, they both clash but also find that it is not always as black-white as all that (e.g. despite her credentials and championing of safeguarding, Solemani still finds the male stand-in's sensitivity prevents her doing her job and her treatment of him/advising him to give up acting, could be considered an abuse of power).
I liked those two episodes more than the rest but Tangled preferred the later episodes when you see Coogan trying to be a better person and empathising with Solemani's past treatment. The cake, btw, was a romantic gesture because she said she wanted to go home and eat said type of cake (persian? pistaccio? I cannot remember the type but she had it for breakfast to her agent's horror). He hurled it at the window to get her attention when he couldn't hand-deliver it. Given she had a kid though and was still married, even if due to separate, whole thing was a bit Dude, what are you doing?
Although I do like Cake myself.

Some bits I think were cringe-humour. For example, Coogan's character compares being Irish to being black when talking about colonialism.
Others were calling out Coogan's character's hypocrisy - for example, claiming to champion women now but not touching transgender issues on twitter with a 40 foot pole.
Sienna Miller's character just wanting to get the job done and not caring about empowerment as a thing (celebration of the vagina pontifications).
What was making you cringe?

SPOILER ALERT

Ugh god I just finished this and thought it was awful. Not funny for a start and the whole romance thing rang so untrue. Older white guy perving on younger woman and going off in a strop because she slept with someone else? The whole situation read as a older bloke's fantasy and seemed to set up exactly the kind of situation it seemed to want to comment on, but because it was steve coogan and he was proclaiming he was a changed man then it was ok?? I mean why couldn't he have just worked with Bobby as a professional and changed as a person? The whole romance thing weakened the character arc and story.

I honestly don't get what the whole thing was trying to say..... I agree, cringe.

Feelinglow27 · 27/04/2022 21:59

Also I find all the overwhelming positive reviews in every paper really suspicious.

LadybirdsAreFab · 28/04/2022 13:06

We have up after 10 minutes. We thought it was awful

I've just finished binge watching this, I liked it. Yes lots of it's cringey, but I took that as intentional, a skit, a piss-take. The scene referenced above Solemani still finds the male stand-in's sensitivity prevents her doing her job and her treatment of him/advising him to give up acting, could be considered an abuse of power) particularly liked this.

JoanWilderbeast · 29/04/2022 20:15

I'm wondering if the message is how confusing/cringe inducing it is now for everyone, content makers and viewers alike, navigating their way through the potential pitfalls of what can seem like constantly evolving social mores and the penalties of getting it wrong?

BrightOrangeOrange · 15/05/2022 17:33

Love Steve Coogan, cant wait to watch it.

fruitbowl · 05/12/2022 00:12

I love both leads & really enjoyed the first couple of episodes. It was sparky, challenging and tackling metoo in an intelligent way. I was disappointed about where their relationship went as it didn't seem to ring true for Bobbie's character & felt cliched. And as a previous poster said, seemed to go against the previous narrative. I liked the fact that the whole thing was riddled with contradictions, as life is like that so maybe that's what was intended? It was a game of 2 halves for me!
