I looked and couldn't see a thread for this which isn't strange as I doubt anyone from outside of Hull would "get" it or bother watching it

Whilst it was funny in parts I am amazed it's on a mainstream channel (4) and I was mortified with the way Hull was portrayed. I assume Hull City had some input with them using the Roary costume.

Did anyone else watch it?!

I watched it. Quite liked it, but I used to work on the edge of Hull. My colleagues were always very careful to ensure than j knew that we were still in the East Riding though.

WhatICallMyUsername · 12/04/2022 23:32

I technically live in the East Riding Grin

I havent seen it Im almost scared to 😃. Some of it was filmed down my sisters road. Did they get the accent right?

grafittiartist · 13/04/2022 07:21

I thought the accent was spot on!
Loved recognising locations.
I really enjoyed it.

bibliomania · 13/04/2022 07:40

I thought it was surprisingly sweet.

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/04/2022 07:43

It was better than I expected. I liked the way the couple rekindled their relationship and the very end was funny.

LizzieSiddal · 13/04/2022 07:51

I really enjoyed it thought it was sweet and funny. Liking forward to the rest of the series.

WhatICallMyUsername · 13/04/2022 08:18

Would anyone outside of Hull get a lot of the jokes?!

I’m not from Hull! I was born in Cheshire but came down south when I was 11. I don’t think you have to be from an area to get the humour.

WhatICallMyUsername · 13/04/2022 08:46

I guess so. I wasn't overly keen but will watch again before I write it off. I think I'd have enjoyed it more if the main actors were actually from Hull!

Edit to say I know some are from Hull! And I love Taj Atwal but she's from Norwich!

I liked it and didn't think it was meant to represent Hull as a whole. It had some quite funny moments. Mind you I grew up in the East end and live in Essex so I'm used to negative TV portrayals!

nodogz · 13/04/2022 10:34

I was looking forward to this and I'm pleased c4 gave it the slot after Derry girls but it wasn't a great first episode.

I hope it will get better.

It was really jarring that it was clearly filmed mostly in West Yorkshire (HILLS!) but then cut in with shots of Hull (I know both areas) but that's a niche criticism.

It just perpetuated stereotypes of mad, boozed up, chaotic northerners. I don't recognise this except in others prejudice.

Accents were a bit off (but it is a funny accent). I don't think anything funny happened either!

It's got quite a long way to reach standards of Drifters, Motherland, Derry Girls, Alma's not normal, This Way Up (all of which have duff episodes)

rc22 · 13/04/2022 11:57

Great to see Hull locations on the screen but those hills were winding me up!! Lucy Beaumont has already annoyed me on this front in Meet the Richardsons. There was an episode where she went back to Hull with her mum. I got all excited that I would be seeing Hull on the telly but the location they used was clearly in West Yorkshire (even the wheelie bins said Calderdale on them!!!)

Anyway back to Hullraisers. I enjoyed it but probably wouldn't be my cup of tea usually. I enjoyed the Radio 4 comedy she did with Maureen Lipman a few years back more.

EachandEveryone · 13/04/2022 13:10

Its got potential and I agree, why couldnt they film it all in Hull? I saw my sisters house a couple of times. I love how theyve made one of the posh areas of Hull look like its full of ruffians luving there😃

Snoopsnoggysnog · 13/04/2022 15:50

It got a great review in the times today! They said it was a “northern riposte to Motherland” Grin

I thought I’d give it a go but I’m in London and absolutely relate to Motherland so maybe I won’t get it but I’ll still try!

happygertie · 15/04/2022 22:25

I loved it. Makes me miss living in hull. Felt some of the accents were an over exaggeration, the "don't" "know" and "no", but feel it's a northern comedy so I think a lot will get where it's coming from.

PoseyFlump · 17/04/2022 17:50

I've never been to Hull and don't think the series gave a bad impression. The characters were universal and I loved it. Loved the trio of big sis, little sis and sis in law. It did remind me of Motherland and if I'm honest I think I enjoyed it more. By the last episode I wanted to see more of them so fingers crossed for a second series.

Staffordshireknotter · 17/04/2022 18:56

I also loved it more than Motherland (which I really enjoyed), to me it was more relatable. Thought the writing and acting was brilliant, thoroughly enjoyed it. More please!

bibliomania · 04/05/2022 09:08

Ah, it has a soft heart underneath - I found last night's episode quite touching as well as funny.

Doubleraspberry · 05/05/2022 22:52

I want more of this. Loved it.

I loved it! Loved the positive male role models and basically decent people, love Motherland but the characters are such awful people. Found it very funny too

bibliomania · 18/05/2022 10:30

Loved last night's - I thought it beautifully captured that ambivalence around unexpected pregnancy. Funny and touching.
