Masterchef Australia - why is everyone hysterical?

I am based in the UK and BBC iPlayer has series 10 of Masterchef Australia on it. I love a food show and the UK Masterchef but WTF is this?!

It is so overblown. Screaming, contestants crying before they have even cooked, their families cheering and whooping. It's so noisy and tiring.

Am I missing something? Are contestants acting like a plate of food is a matter of life and death because there is a Hunger Games' twist and they may actually be killed if they cook badly? It's all so overblown and weird.

Also the levels of ego and smugness from the judges make Greg Wallace appear 'not a twat' by comparison which is most disconcerting.

Does it calm down at all or should I give up now?

I have never watched this but your description has me very intrigued ! It sounds ridiculously ott!

FelicityPike · 25/03/2022 17:17

That was the worst season ever of MCA. A terrible bunch.

ILookAtTheFloor · 25/03/2022 18:44

MasterChef Australia is bigger and much more bombastic and lasts for MONTHS. 60 episodes plus for a season!

I normally skip the awful 'audition' episodes and pick it up for the top 24. Although as there as so many contestants you don't get the same level of detailed feedback as you would in the UK one. The narrative focuses on a few good/ bad ones.

There's also quite a lot of repetition eg the inevitable dessert pressure tests.

Also skip the 'master classes' as that's just a bore fest for me, not sure if the latter seasons have that.

My favourite years were 2014-16.

Despite the above criticism I have really enjoyed it, the length means you get very invested in the contestants.

It doesn't calm down, ever. It is an exhausting watch. Also the relentless up speak. Some of them, most of them, go up at the end of ever single ingredient they list. I can't understand how it's possible to speak like that. It can make me feel quite murderous. Top hate watching.

Peridot1 · 25/03/2022 18:50

I love it. Have watched every season. Not keen on the audition stage but really enjoy it as it goes on.

Can’t stand the Uk version.

Different strokes I suppose!

mynameiscalypso · 25/03/2022 18:51

I watched a lot of it when I was on maternity leave at the start of lockdown. It's relentless and there are just SO many episodes in a season. It's bizarre but then you realise that you've become so invested in it that you have to keep going.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 25/03/2022 19:37

I love it. I like the mystery box/elimination/immunity challenges & the teamwork. It's even better on iplayer coz no adverts although repetition is annoying.

midsomermurderess · 25/03/2022 19:40

You can also watch it here southhemitv.com/ Past series, and you can also watch current series as they show.

sweetbellyhigh · 25/03/2022 19:51

I love it. As someone who has worked in film and TV for years, I think of it as television gold, a masterclass in what makes compelling TV. Of course it os pitched at an Australian audience however so understandable if it misses the mark in some other countries.

The thing about television is that the topic is never the point, first and foremost television is about people. Makers want the audience to care about the characters. And MCA strikes a chord with the most positive aspects of Australia, it's rich diversity celebrated in food, the refugee-to-success stories, the vibrancy of its diversity and outdoor living, the positivity of the average Joe.

littlbrowndog · 25/03/2022 20:01

I like it but the fecking music.

Sisisimone · 25/03/2022 20:12

Well, your description is massively overdramatised. It's a bit more lively than the UK version but nothing like the level you've described.
I love the Aus version. So much better than the UK format. Can't wait for the new series to start next month

Nowthereistwo · 25/03/2022 20:29

We only watch the Australian version, but agree there are too many people at the start and the auditions are too much.

But the quality and diversity of the cooking is amazing

MayaWasSackedForGCBeliefs · 25/03/2022 20:33

MC OZ is master chef on crack. I love it

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/03/2022 20:35

I watched for the first time tonight, the shouting really put me off.

Sisisimone · 25/03/2022 20:47

Yes have to say I skip the auditions bit

Staggersaurus · 25/03/2022 20:57

I’ve only seen a few episodes but found it amusing that the woman presenter/judge styled herself more like Prue Leith than the real Prue Leith Grin

ILookAtTheFloor · 25/03/2022 20:58

@littlbrowndog

I like it but the fecking music.
We get that awful song, for copyright reasons we don't get Katy Perry's Hot and Cold like the Aussies do!

However, the intros, especially in the early seasons are just pure cringe! I never skip them on Amazon cos I love to hate watch all the intros!

Beekindbeehumble · 25/03/2022 21:17

I have watched a few episodes. What I found strange was the contestants all cook, but the judges only taste a few!

Davros · 27/03/2022 23:42

I've loved it for years and watched every series. I also live MCUK. You can't compare them because the Oz one is massively commercial with everything sponsored down to the contestants' shoes and big prize money. The UK winner gets a tasteful trophy

Hathertonhariden · 12/05/2022 09:36

It's vastly superior to the UK version. The challenges are much more interesting.
