It is good but quite odd as the casting is strangely similar to the film version, ie they all look and sound very alike.

apart from the Willoughby character who looks like Jamie Callum

Yes, I've been noticing that - even down to the intonation on some of the lines of dialogue. Willoughby is the exception (and Mrs Dashwood seems more sensible than the film version so far).

Shannaratinger · 01/01/2008 22:09

Haven't seen the film but willoughby is v. cute and really enjoyed it. couldn't get on with the book though

constancereader · 01/01/2008 22:11

yes, I thought that they sounded like they were doing an impersonation of the film actors.

janeite · 01/01/2008 22:13

Just watched it and came straight on here to complain about it! Totally derivative of the ET version, Willoughby and Marianne both look like pugs, Elinor sounds just like Emma Thompson and it's totally lacking in style or passion. Blah!

choosyfloosy · 01/01/2008 22:13

God, where to begin

It does look remarkably like the film version

and seems to be aiming for a very 'filmic' feel as they are all on the move all the time

only as they have multiple episodes, it all seemed to move like treacle, i thought they would never leave norland

mark thingy as sir john is excellent

the small stuff bothers me
like i really don't think that marianne and elinor would be out of mourning for their father within 3 months
slightly more hats than usual which is good
colonel brandon would surely only have called marianne 'miss dashwood'
and to have a scene where mrs dashwood, elinor and colonel brandon are sitting not talking to each other is pure hokum

but i do think elinor and edward look a lot more like a couple than emma n hugh ever did

choosyfloosy · 01/01/2008 22:14

LOl at pugs

i thought they looked like twins, quite weird

chonky · 01/01/2008 22:18

ooh no, this Willoughby is most unattractive (agree with pug description). However, David Morrisey is swoonsome as the Colonel.

Jazzicatz · 01/01/2008 22:18

Prefer Colin Firth!!!!!!!!!

janeite · 01/01/2008 22:20

And what's with all the charging around in carriages with over-excited music? Very strange indeed!

Threadworm · 01/01/2008 22:22

I missed this unfortunately. For some reason I have fallen in love with choosyfloosy's comment,

'slightly more hats than usual which is good'.

I think I will stay away from all future episodes so that I can preserve that comment as my exclusive perspective on the adaptation.

fishie · 01/01/2008 22:23

i like this mrs d. the marianne is less petulant. elinor is suitably goofy.

janeite · 01/01/2008 22:27

Yes Mrs D is good; she was fantastic in "East Is East" too but I don't think I've seen her in anything else.

Saker · 01/01/2008 22:28

I thought that about it being really similar to the film as well! And agree Willoughby is not attractive enough - and already they are flagging him up as a "baddie" whereas in the book you get swept along with Marianne in thinking he is almost too good to be true. There is no reason for antagonism between him and Brandon at this point. I know it's minor really but I don't know why they have to change it.

I thought Sir John was good, but doesn't Mrs Jennings look like someone in drag? John Dashwood and his wife were good too though she's got a good part to get her teeth into.

Hard to beat Alan Rickman as Brandon, but David Morrisey is good.

Overall I thought it was quite good and faithful to the book in general, but still somehow it didn't have quite the right feel to it - can't put my finger on it - somehow the characters aren't really gelling with each other.

EightRustyMaidsAMilking · 01/01/2008 22:29

Only Elinor is Miss Dashwood, Miss plus Christian name is correct for younger sisters.

There was a certain deja-vu about the title sequence - DH & I have been working our way through the Bleak House DVD since Christmas.

janeite · 01/01/2008 22:30

Sorry Mrs J is Linda Bassett I think - I quite liked her - she is a cartoon figure in the book too, so needs to be overplayed I think.

PeachesMcLean · 01/01/2008 22:31

but I thought that was right, that Brandon couldn't abide Willoughby cos he knew what a cad he is, and that there's some sort of history? Sorry, can't quite remember the book...

Saker · 01/01/2008 22:32

Don't want to spoil it for anyone who doesn't know but I think at this point Brandon doesn't know that although he does find out during the time he is staying in Devon; might be wrong.

saadia · 01/01/2008 22:33

It was so utterly similar to the film I don't actually see the point of making it. I thought Edward was doing a Hugh Grant impersonation and yes Elinor sounds exactly like Emma Thompson and the evil wife's comments were almost exactly like the woman in the film. And the jovial Sir Middleton's family was much more fun in the film. There is definitely something missing - hope Andrew Davies is not losing his touch.

Yes Mrs Jennings isn't how I expected them to play her but I don't necessarily think it's wrong.

wessexgirl · 01/01/2008 22:35

Even before I saw it I wondered why they were bothering, tbh. I love the Emma Thompson version and can't imagine it being beaten for a long time.

Saker · 01/01/2008 22:35

The evil wife's comments are directly from the book so I suppose both the film and the TV are following that.
Is Sue Birtwhistle involved in this one? I'm beginning to wonder if she is the genius rather than Andrew Davies, since Cranford was so good...

Lio · 01/01/2008 22:37

Willoughby was in The History Boys (stage and film). I am liking this adaptation.

PaperChain · 01/01/2008 22:38

I watched it, and agree about teh casting. Especialy Elinor - she sounded so similar to Emma thomson!
