IHi all, watched a series many years ago (maybe 2000's), on Channel 4 I think. It was about songwriting and music, and showed how the effect and feeling of a piece of music could be changed by altering a few notes, or, say, changing the key from major to minor. It had a male presenter who would demonstrate using popular songs from the Beatles etc., that he would play or sing himself (he didn't sing very well, I seem to remember, but the points he made were very clear and interesting).

I would love to find it again but haven't the faintest idea what it was called or who presented it. Anyone?

It may not be what you are referring to but the comedian Bill Bailey does lots of routines where he changes music from major to minor key with great effect. A quick YouTube search can find them.

I vaguely remember something like that but I think
It was BBC

It would have been Howard Goodall. He did a number of programmes explaining the structure of music called How Music Works on Channel 4.

God, this made me laugh at myself. I looked at the title and thought maybe it's the old grey whistle test, that was many years ago.

Only to discover you mean early 2,000's which in my mind is about 5 minutes ago!!

I'm getting old.

I thought Howard Goodall as well but it could also be Charles Hazlewood.

Well done lovely people, it's Howard Goodall and "How Music Works".

Yeah, I'm old, 2000s is not that many years ago really...

DD is interested in songwriting, and I remembered watching this series and finding that even a musical numpty like me could learn something from it.
