Loved first season of Outlander, but now struggling in season 2!

Thread title says it all really. I know I'm very late to the party, but really loved the first season of Outlander. Often binge watched 4 episodes in a row. Downloaded the first 3 books to my Kindle. Even booked a 5 day break in Glencoe for the Autumn.

But just cannot get into the second season at all. Just finished watching episode 5 last night and the thought of watching another one just makes me feel very meh.

Does it pick up again?

Is it because it's mostly set outside Scotland? I remember it being a common issue at the time for viewers - they preferred when it was based solely in Scotland.

I'd say it picks up (well I've watched all of them and can't wait for the next series Grin). But if you're not interested in following the characters to wherever their lives take them on their individual journeys, then it might not be for you.

I wasn’t so enamoured with the episodes set in France either. I persevered though, because, you know, Jamie.

TeamBlondie · 22/01/2022 19:23

I couldn’t finish season 1. I found some of the scenes so barbaric and horrific.

I thought all Outlander had been taken off Amazon Prime just recently and the new series will only be available if you pay for Starz.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 22/01/2022 19:33

I nearly didn't watch 2 because I found the last few episodes of 1 so nasty, frankly. But I decided to give it a go and I enjoyed it. I gave up on the last series though.

Oh no!!!!! I love a binge of outlander.
DockOTheBay · 22/01/2022 19:35

Yeah I have up halfway through season 2. It was a bit boring TBH.

ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor · 22/01/2022 19:37

Same here but I continued because at the time there wasn’t much else for me to watch. Sadly the books are the same, too much of the American revolution in it for me.

Nepenthe · 22/01/2022 19:39

Get through the France stuff and then it gets good again.

peaceanddove · 22/01/2022 19:45

Okay, thanks. I will persevere for a while longer, I think.

The books are the same. I always similar to Harry Potter, once they got successful the editing seems less tight, the books get enormous and there’s massive chunks I think could probably be cut out.

I was hoping they’d do that for the series. Overall the story and plot is still great, but there are bits that are just filler.

I keep going though as I do love the story and the characters.

NatashaBedwouldbenice · 22/01/2022 23:02

If you think the tv series goes off the boil, the books are going to kill you.

^^ this is what’s keeping me going through season 2!!

Otherwise exactly the same as you Op, I think we’re on season 2 ep 4/5 and…. Eh.

Jamie though….

SantaClawsServiette · 23/01/2022 00:16

I thought that none of the seasons were up to the standard of the first. I think the scale of the first season, the political intrigue, really worked. But once it widened out it never had the same kind of credibility. And some of the sexy stuff just gets a bit old.

I like season 3 more than 2, but then season 4 was awful.

Andylion · 23/01/2022 18:27

For me, the whole point of reading the first book was because it was set in Scotland.

Giggorata · 03/02/2022 01:07

Yes, I sort of drifted off from this and haven't even attempted the books.

fridascruffs · 03/02/2022 01:48

I gave up on the books. First three were great, but then one started with 500 or so pages set in a sort of 18th century Glasto and I never did work out why it was germane to the plot, which seems to dissolve around book 4. Agree with pp, some serious editing needed but she was selling so much by then.

octoberfarm · 03/02/2022 03:19

Definitely keep going! We similarly loved season 1, felt very meh (being generous) about season 2 but have been really glad we stuck it out and it did improve again, massively. Can't wait for the next season.

KilledByWitches · 03/02/2022 12:45

I never finished season 4, I hated it and it became a chore to watch. I kind of want to force myself to finish it to see if 5 is better, but I think I'll wait for reviews first.

crumpet · 03/02/2022 13:04

End of season 2 was superb I thought. Worth persevering.
