Anyone NOT a fan of uk dramas any more and prefer well made well written American shows?

I keep trying uk stuff and every time I'm disappointed!

So I'm increasingly reluctant to try new stuff. I find this is particularly true of shows "everyone" raves about!

The main one I thought was utterly shit was dr foster.

I keep getting sucked in by them being touted on chat shows and online (both marketing stuff and family and friends and recommendations on forums like here)

So I get excited at the prospect and then try them - and they're crap!

I much prefer well made, good long series (24 episodes or thereabouts, several series at least 3) American shows

Lie to me, white collar, suits, bull, the rookie, prodigal son (really bummed that's been cancelled!), this is us, lucifer, castle, the mentalist, house, criminal minds, bones, desperate housewives, friends, the good wife, the good fight, charmed (original), elementary, greys anatomy, the practice. ER, ncis, Mrs maisel,

Very very few uk shows come close - not least I think because they aren't given the same investment! In terms of both money and time. Most are 6-8 episodes per series but that isn't the whole story I feel the quality of writing and production is lacking too. Lots of very predictable, non innovative ideas and storylines.

So this thread has 2 aims

1 I'm looking for a new quality show to watch I tend to end up watching old favourites on repeat as I struggle to find new shows I enjoy as much

2 I'm wondering if I'm the only person that feels this way?

I want uk tv and film to do well but it seems to be really struggling at the moment and I'd like to discuss why that may be.

I can't remember the last time there was a genuinely good new uk show that I enjoyed came out. I keep trying ones that get good reviews and good "public" response but when I try them they're shit!

I WANT to support uk tv and film making but I'm not finding this easy to do at all!

Have you tried Scorpion? I like the things in your first post and thought of scorpion as a suggestion. Have you tried the NCIS franchises? I like Los Angeles and New Orleans.

I loved Mare of Easttown escept the ending OMG - just end on the surprise without the utterly overdone suspense, drama, bullshit.
Is it thought necessary so we might all want to watch the follow up series?
So annoying.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 21/01/2022 07:36

have you tried
Giri/Haji
I May destroy you

Martin Clunes in Manhunt on ITV was v good.

MummyWoodentop · 21/01/2022 13:04

The Terror, Peaky Blinders, North Water.
It's a bit unfair to compare anywhere to the likes of Netflix with their multi trillion dollar companies.

Prison drama Time got good reviews

I actually think Netflix dramas are going downhill too. I am finding less that is watchable.

I have given up watching British tv dramas. Mainly because it is the same set of actors just in different roles, over and over again

BobbieT1999 · 22/01/2022 03:10

Not read the full thread but this comes down to taste, surely? Personally I find at least half of the shows you listed terrible and really poor quality compared to much British drama (Lucifer being a great example).

US programmes are usually so formulaic and often weak & repetitive with 2d characters.

Imo, obviously.

You get the odd break out from the US that passes the quality test (eg the Good Fight) but not that much. And when they do create something great they often flog it to death before it finally limps off screens.

Thats not say Brits don't also produce some crap (we do) but US shows with British writers tend to stand out.

MummyWoodentop · 22/01/2022 13:26

I wonder if in a few years we'll all have had our fill of box set dramas and moved onto something different. Apparently Netflix share price has fallen - end of the pandemic fall off. And they're debating the cost of the BBC license fee.

THIS!! I couldn't get past the first episode of "Suits". Such predictable trash. I'm currently watching (the US show) "The Following" with Kevin Bacon and honestly if I wasn't such a massive Bacon fan, I would say it's utter nonsensical trash.

British dramas often have a lot more depth.

I think the trouble with the long series is that they may start really good and then can go down hill.. eg Dexter, though the recent reboot was v good.

Uk drama- Happy Valley is good as pp has said, like broadchurch in genre but actually probably better than Broadchurch.
Dublin Murders was really good, also.

Another uk one: Back to Life by Daisy Haggard, its a black comedy drama . There have been 2 or 3 series.

US drama: I've just finished Mad Men , really good if you haven't seen it.

XelaM · 23/01/2022 16:07

Has anyone on this thread seen "The Victim" (the short British drama)? I thought it was soo good, but now don't know if that's just me? I usually have great taste if I say so myself 😂

CousinKrispy · 24/01/2022 11:06

Ooh yes Giri/Haji was weird but good.

Love Succession, it's one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Detectorists is so well done.

I don't have the patience to stick with a lot of current drama, couldn't get past 1 episode of Show Trial. I loved No Offence, wonder if it will ever come back.
