Brand new episodes of Vera starts this Sunday (9th Jan) on ITV.

I didn't realise it's a new series of Call The Midwife on Sunday as well, or is it just a previous season repeat?

CTM is new series.

DoTheyKnowItsLemonJuice · 07/01/2022 11:33

Would you say a 12-year-old who likes some grown-up mysteries could enjoy Vera?

DD is a big fan of Father Brown, Death in Paradise, etc. but the first time we tried a Vera, the opening scene seemed too dark for her (murdered teenager, sort of posed in the bath I think). We agreed to switch off pretty quickly. However she’s a bit older now, and I’m also not sure how typical it was…

Crowdfundingforcake Thanks for the impressively quick reply Smile

DoTheyKnowItsLemonJuice I enjoy Vera because it's not violent but you have to remember she is on the murder squad. Much of Vera would be more than suitable - lots of landscapes and "talky" bits but there's still the occasional jarring bit, not what I would consider gruesome and at least it's never gratuitous. It's worth giving it another shot.

DoTheyKnowItsLemonJuice
I should have mentioned we are currently watching Johnathon Creek
A enjoyable blend of mystery, puzzle solving and a bit of humour.
Some might consider it a little sexist though.
It's available on the Drama channel and, I believe, some some episodes are are on BBC IPlayer

Hurrah! I love Vera, a lockdown find. Thanks for the heads up, OP!

DoTheyKnowItsLemonJuice · 07/01/2022 18:24

Thanks @species5618. Might try and find time to watch a couple of Veras on my own first. DD is fine with murders if the overall vibe of the programme isn’t unrelentingly dark.

Jonathan Creek sounds promising too.

JeSuis · 07/01/2022 18:26

Yay! Love Vera. Thanks op

I have never watched this, do I need to have watched the previous series or is it like Midsummer Murders where you can watch odd ones. The previous series are on BritBox which I have on offer at the moment but it looks like quite a lot to get through so it would be something that I would probably dip in and out of rather than watch all at once

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/01/2022 06:20

No need to see previous series. Each episode is stand alone.

Gechik · 09/01/2022 06:24

Thanks, will watch tonight then.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/01/2022 15:42

Anybody else see this? I enjoyed it, as ever. Not altogether I followed all the twists and turns of the plot, but don't think it matters.

Good acting from the young lad, I thought.

siestaingsnake · 10/01/2022 17:48

@DoTheyKnowItsLemonJuice try pie in the sky with 12 year old. If they like HP films the detective is Mr Dursley

thatgingergirl · 10/01/2022 19:44

Joe McGann! I don't think I've seen him in anything for years!

Looneytune253 · 10/01/2022 20:04

Call the midwife is a new series but it started last week mind so you've got one to catch up on

QueenofLouisiana · 10/01/2022 20:06

Love Vera and enjoyed the new show. The fairground scene was filmed in my hometown. I spent many days there.

It would probably be fine, I think, but worth a try.

I watch a lot of mysteries with my kids at that age - so far popular ones have been Maigret, Rosemary and Thyme, Lewis, Cadfael.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/01/2022 17:22

Anybody still watching?

siestaingsnake · 17/01/2022 17:43

yes. My friend messaged me that they have started doing day and half day tours of locations

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/01/2022 18:07

Oooh! I'd like to go on a city break to Newcastle, so that might go on the list of things we could do.

So, I am half way through Tyger Tyger and I am finding it awful. They are all standing crazily far apart from each other all the time.

It was VERY noticeable wasn't it? 😂

I have a friend from up that way and went to Newcastle and Northumberland for a break last year. Spotted so many filming locations. Messaged friend when the fairground scene was on as I was convinced it was where she's from, and it was!

I need to go back. Newcastle was a beautiful city and I really need to explore it more.

SantaClawsServiette · 18/01/2022 16:15

Yes. It's not just the being far apart. It's the constant camera switches, because you can't just show two people talking. All with a blurry shoulder in the foreground. In some of the dialogue scenes it feels so jumpy it's very uncomfortable.
