Does anyone else watch this show?

I love it, but nobody seems to know about it! Sad

Just caught up.

I really enjoyed this episode - Kevin has grown up.

GastroNuisance · 22/03/2022 12:16

I thought it was a good episode. I do think it's funny where he has those newborn car seats then Nicky leans into the car and pulls out a toddler.

They can stand in their cots so are presumably too old for the carrycots?

LatinforTelly · 23/03/2022 19:15

Agree GastroNuisance - baby anachronisms annoy me!

Also who was looking after them all that time he was at the hospital - Nicky's wife/partner?! Bit of a big ask. I blame tv progs like this and Friends for not communicating how all-consuming having a baby is...as though you can stuff it in a cupboard for a few hours whilst you get on with life!

Just watched this week’s episode which is all about Kate/Toby. Not sure that the decline in their relationship is actually plausible. Be interested to see everyone else’s thoughts.

Sadly no adult Kevin this week 😢

I thought it was really sad but quite realistic portrayal of how a relationship suffers with young children, summering hostilities, different wants. Bad Toby was a bit hammed up a bit, which was unrealistic, but he’s definitely not one to hang onto if he doesn’t change - and we know the writings on the wall anyway. Very sad.
Doodledoop · 24/03/2022 19:38

I thought the KaToby episode was good in showing that nobody is the bad guy here.. they both have reasonable viewpoints. What seems somewhat implausible is how they didnt make any attempt to fight for their relationship on the way. And the earlier Toby losing weight in secret, gym girlfriend plot line was rubbish. This is better.

Not sure I really got the flashback Kates - is it just she never believed in herself until now? It does make all Jack and Rebecca's parenting look like shit - those kids were messed up way before Jack died.

Libertynan · 24/03/2022 20:12

Toby has changed a lot definitely- but people do.

So at least now we know how that ended .

I liked that it was in San Fran as have visited many times and can relate to the gradient of the hills 🤪

Aboutcoffee · 25/03/2022 11:48

Toby must be on the mega bucks in SF based on the house and location of his apartment. They really turned him into a jerk. He went about it all wrong but did have valid points re jacks schooling etc.

Also surprising that Kate and the kids had not visited before now,

I really wonder if Kate makes it! No sign of her in the flash forward. And if they had divorced why would Toby be coming to the death bed?? Unless he had remained close to the family because he was raising the kids?? So many possibilities but we will have to get through a Randall episode first. So much to get through!!

I'd say Rebecca and Miguel's party must be where Jacks accident happens .

EasterIssland · 25/03/2022 14:00

I was surprised how Their relationship had died only after 3months. Feels like they weren’t happy before that.

AnnesBrokenSlate · 25/03/2022 15:09

Maybe the flashbacks were showing Kate doesn't really trust any of the men in her life - not even the ones she completely adores ie Jack and Kevin. Also that she's always been risk averse. In that context, she could never move to SanFran because she can't completely trust Toby and it's a big risk to uproot her family.
Is the moral of this season that no-one changes or grows? That's depressing. And as a PP said, points to Jack and Rebecca being rubbish parents. Are there different writers this season? So much of it feels 'off'.

drwitch · 25/03/2022 15:41

How did they do old toby? - I mean did they film the scenes in advance when the actor was fatter or did they get horrid thin toby to wear a padded suit?

@AnnesBrokenSlate I got that she did not believe in herself until she climbed that hill, that and the phone call was suggested that the choice to stay in LA was her being brave (rather than moving to SF and being safe and unhappy)
AnnesBrokenSlate · 25/03/2022 16:02

I think of the choices she had - staying in LA; moving to SanFran; having a serious conversation about options with Toby - she chose the easiest. It didn't seem brave to me.

Maybe I'm just grumpy but I'm not liking this season as much as the others.

Orpheline · 25/03/2022 16:28

I saw the actor on a show, and Toby wore a fat-suit in the beginning.

dimples76 · 25/03/2022 16:37

I was surprised that it was only meant to be 3 months later too - things went downhill fast. I guess that they had both changed a lot but they did seem to give up quite easily.

AnnesBrokenSlate · 25/03/2022 19:05

I read an article that said the writers always planned for weight to be an issue for Kate and Toby and that's why they cast someone thinner to play Toby in the first place. I wasn't sure if that was true because I'm sure the Kate actress has worn padding too.

GastroNuisance · 25/03/2022 22:51

I have shamelessly been googling whether Kate wears padding Blushshe doesn't really say. She sort of swerves it so I'm none the wiser.

I'm fascinated (as a fat person) that she is so beautiful but really large. Daily life must be so limiting - hence the hill 'success'.

The make up throughout the all the series is remarkable.

Little Kate at the pool is SO cute!

Anyway I liked this episode. As a pp said neither are wrong really just changed as people.

isurvived3under2 · 26/03/2022 00:12

@GastroNuisance the baby seats can generally be used up to 13 kgs so it's realistic that the twins could still be in it (I can't work out how old they are but my singleton used it until 16 months and my twins still got theirs at 18 months). As long as the head doesn't stick out and the weight is within the limit, they're the safest seat (and certainly the easiest to carry onto a plane, especially when you have 2!).

VivienneDelacroix · 26/03/2022 01:41

I loved the Kate episode. I thought the flashbacks were to show that it needed Kate to believe in herself for her to achieve difficult things, and she needed to do this on her own, not with the various men in her life trying to cajole and convince her. (Kev and Randall climbing the fence, Jack swimming, Toby moving to SF). It could have been a depressing episode, but actually at the end it was triumphant and hopeful.

Chrissy Metz wrote the episode and Mandy Moore directed it-and I think it showed a great depth of understanding Kate from both of them.

I don't think Chrissy Metz does wear padding - if you look at her Instagram she is very much Kate's size.

AnnesBrokenSlate · 26/03/2022 01:58

I don't think she wears padding now but I think there were points in the past.

Mandy Moore's direction was fab. It's interesting they've let the actors help 'write' their closing episodes. It was the same for the Beth episode.

XelaM · 26/03/2022 21:41

I still feel sorry for Toby. Kate is so hard on him and she doesn't like the happy, healthy, successful version of him, but prefers him when he is a depressed mess. That's really awful. I'm team Toby

LatinforTelly · 27/03/2022 12:34

I thought this episode was really good and quite sad. I sort of agree with you XelaM but not really on either team, just think they have both grown apart instead of together. Some of the writing was great "you fell in love with a coping mechanism" and when little Kate is in the pool with her dad and he says are you not going to let go and she says no, why would I? Quite moving.

bookish83 · 27/03/2022 18:54

I kinda agree. I'm not a huge fan of Toby but he has clearly bettered himself and doesn't want to be a depressed, heart attack waiting to happen.

I'm not saying moving is the right thing but she is really a whinger!

SapatSea · 27/03/2022 19:49

I thought that was quite a good episode (not looking forward to self righteous Randall next week and more pool flashbacks with St. Jack).

I think Toby has improved. I hated Old Toby. He took control, got his weight down (after his heart attack), addressed his depression but he hated being a SAHD and he should have discusssed the LA job offer with Kate . He also should have put Kate and not his business calls first when she visited him and known he needed to tread carefully and that she had made a big step by visiting. He also shouldn't have blindsided her with a works do and the house - it reminded me of how Jack acted around Rebecca or Randall treats Beth - big decisions and grand gestures made without discussion (e.g. Jack buying the house without discussing it with Rebecca, Randall moving his dad in, changing career, wanting to foster etc) I guess Kate thinks she'd be lonely in SF. She is rooted in LA with her ill mum needing her, a job she finally likes, support for Jack and Kevin is there of course (as Toby pointed out) who probably is a bit of a surrogate dad for her kids.

Was the take away that Kate had finally "gotten out of the way of herself" and was taking control - letting Toby go and asking to be considered for the FT teachers job?

BaconAndAvocado · 27/03/2022 22:38

Thought the Katoby episode was very cleverly done. And, as mentioned above, it demonstrated how sometimes there is no good or bad guy in a breakdown in a relationship.

Agree that Kate conquering the hill and then going for the job represents the end of Katoby.

Regarding Kate’s size, she is that size in RL.

I had no idea that Toby wore a fat suit in earlier episodes.
