The Amazing Mr Blunden - SPOILERS

TheLadyofChristmasPast · 24/12/2021 12:06

This was my favourite book and film as a child.

No one else seems to have heard of it, though it must be sufficiently famous for Sky to make an adaptation.

Anyone else looking forward to watching this?

I’ve put spoilers in the heading so hopefully we can come back and discuss it.

Yep l downloaded it and we watched it earlier today. I enjoyed it as a child but confess l wouldn't really remember the story.

I thought it was OK. Not amazing.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 24/12/2021 20:56

I would like to see this but not sure if I can- we don’t have Sky.

I saw the original film/tv adaptation when I was a child and it made a great impression but I didn’t know what it was, and it was only a few years ago when I was hoovering up kids’ ghost stories that I read it and realised.

purpleme12 · 24/12/2021 20:57

I clicked on this thread thinking it was old adaptation that we loved when we were little!
I got my dad to tape it when it was on a few weeks ago

I don't have sky so can't watch this one!

Tommika · 24/12/2021 21:16

It was quite good, not as good as the previous version - but if you’ve not seen the ‘original’ 70s version then it’s a fresh story

Anyone spot the original Bella, Madeline Smith making an appearance ?

MordenLarch · 24/12/2021 21:32

I love the original - so incredibly spooky,, and with Diana Dors as the villain. Lawrence Nesmith (I think) is amazing as Mr Blunden. I’ve never understood why it wasn’t as big as The Railway Children

It was one of our favourites when we were little As well as The Railway Children Oh and The Wolves of Willoughby Chase too!
maddiemookins16mum · 24/12/2021 21:53

I liked it but adore the original. Loved the ‘goodbyes’ at the end and the nod to Diana Dors in the bit where the puppet show showed Bella in the theatre (it had Miss Dors as one of the advertised acts).

MordenLarch · 25/12/2021 17:09

Ah yes TWoWC is great!

TheLadyofChristmasPast · 25/12/2021 19:24

Just finished watching it and really enjoyed it. It was pretty similar to the original, just more modern.

The only thing they didn’t do was explain why Jamie was late getting back. On the whole I thought it was great

It was on every year when I was little. 1970s. I still watch the original if it's on.
purpleme12 · 26/12/2021 09:07

I was born mid 80s and me and my sister watched it loads when we were little
But no one else seems to know about it when we ask them!

Mydoghealsmyheart · 26/12/2021 17:21

I loved the original. Even bought a dvd as it never seemed to be shown on tv but now we’ve got no DVD player so am thinking of watching this new version. But the original cannot be surpassed I reckon.

QuietFlame · 26/12/2021 20:10

I first watched this film in the late 70 s I think? Then in the late 80s.
It has been shown on tv every few years or so but never seemed very well known I agree.( the girl who played Lucy in the original went on to marry Peter Sellars and then died young herself )
I actually enjoyed this remake but prefer the ‘present’ to be in the 1920s rather than 2020s, if that makes sense!
I loved how they actually used the original script though, and both Simon Callow and Tamsin Grieg seemed to play their roles exactly as they were played before.

You don't need Sky. We don't have it. It's also on Now TV Entertainment. We signed up for a 7 day free trial to watch it. The original 1972 version is on Now TV Movies.

They should have thought the generations through for the bit at the end. Needed a couple more greats to make sense with it being set now. And I'd have preferred it to be more serious, the daft pantomime style baddies sort of spoilt it a bit I thought. But it was an ok watch.

MrBlunden · 31/12/2023 02:56

It was on channel 4 this week.

MrBlunden · 31/12/2023 03:00

Both directed by none other than Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Lionel Jeffries!

purpleme12 · 31/12/2023 11:52

Was it? When was it on?

EnjoyingTheSilence · 31/12/2023 12:00

Ooh will check our All 4

notawittyname1954 · 31/12/2023 14:20

Love the amazing Mr Blunden, especially the original film

Umanresources · 31/12/2023 14:42

I loved the original and would watch it if it was on TV. It always made me cry, like the Railway Children. I did see the remake but didn't enjoy it as much.

purpleme12 · 31/12/2023 17:55

It's not on 4od when I search. And I didn't notice it when I looked through radio times this week.
Are you sure? Can you give a link to it on 4od?
