Just saw some of it on the BBC Newsday programme on BBC News Channel.
Iām aware John Cleese seems to have grumpy advancing age man syndrome and this is a long standing thing with him. But it was a cringe fest for me watching that, I felt sorry for the interviewer. I wouldnāt exactly call it a hard hitting, no holds barred barrage of inappropriate questions. Alongside asking about his tour she was asking him things about cancel culture for example which he has spoken about many times before. As far as I can tell he was just annoyed that the whole time wasnāt spent publicising his latest tour. But surely you donāt do a BBC interview expecting to solely talk about your latest money making ventures? And not only that but only answering questions which you deem suitable and even complaining about a question about touring in a pandemic which I would think is standard fare in these times.
As for his comment that the BBC need to retrain her, how bloody patronising is that.
Apparently the BBC hadnāt aired the interview prior to John tweeting about it. Maybe he had the news on 24/7 waiting for it to appear and it hadnāt so itās entirely possible he was thinking no publicity is bad publicity letās give this a whirl.
I used to like watching re-runs of Fawlty Towers but not anymore now I know more about him. Iāve had a guts full of miserable sods like him moaning about anything and everything. Is his life really that awful?
The trouble is he purports to be a comedian but every time iāve heard about him in the past few years he is complaining about something. I donāt remember him actually making any jokes or even smiling for that matter. I think he is tarnishing his back catalogue by being so unnecessarily combative in interviews. Maybe he would be better booking a slot on QVC if theyād have him, that way he can do the hard sell and only talk about what he wants to talk about.
Anyway I think he came across badly and I wouldnāt pay to see him but I expect there are enough people out there who still will which is what heās banking on.
