Watched Sandra Bullock in this film on Netflix last night.

It was gritty and well acted, loved SB in it. Didn't see the twist coming at all. I'm not sure a 5 year old would be able to pull a trigger on a shotgun but DH thinks she would plus she had a mark on her face from the recoil.

The plot developed at a good pace until the ending....so abrupt. Would have liked to see Katie getting to know about Ruth before they meet.

Did Blake from the fish factory tell the colleague whose dad was a cop about Ruth or how else did she find out?!

Whilst watching reminded me no one knows what someone is going through.

Anyone else seen it?

We watched it last night. I fell asleep half way through so that says a lot BlushGrin It was okaaaaay. I thought the story was going to be that she’d been raped by her dad and the sister was actually her daughter or something like that and the dad had tried to attack them and she’d done it in self defence but didn’t want her sister to know the real background so went along with the story… way too much time on my hands to be thinking all this shit up but anyway. The actual story surprised me.

Ubiquery · 12/12/2021 11:15

I watched it yesterday, really enjoyed it. “Gritty” is about right. I saw the “twist” coming early, but mistakenly thought there’d be some kind of rape involved. Very glad there wasn’t as there was no need.
I found the privilege of Katie/Katherine a bit annoying, with her convenient amnesia. Agree that the ending was rushed.

MrsSiba · 12/12/2021 13:30

I'm glad there was no rape involved too.

Why did they need to be evicted if they owned the farmhouse? Couldn't work that out.

I watched it and then remembered that I’d seen a drama on tv with the same story line.
I enjoyed but did feel they rushed the ending a bit.

isthismylifenow · 12/12/2021 14:05

I could not get into it at all.

I don't think I'll give it another whirl.

MrsSiba · 12/12/2021 19:32

@Nospringchickendipper the film is based on ITV drama Unforgiven by Sally Wainwright

We watched it today and loved it

Really well acted by all of them

CovidCorvid · 12/12/2021 19:39

Yeah Blake told a colleague. He admitted it, said sorry but he needed to talk and said it “must have got around”.

I didn’t see the twist coming. Not sure I could have done 20 years in prison for something I hadn’t done. If she’d told people they’d have realised it was true….could have dusted for gunpowder residue. Plus she was on the phone when the shot was fired so if people thought about it they’d have realised she couldn’t have been in the right place.

I like SB. I liked the film. Some of it didn't quite add up e.g. how did the adopted parents turn up so quickly and why did the woman totally accept her account that the sister did it. But I still liked it. Off to see if I can find Unforgiven.

YodaiamsaidI · 12/12/2021 19:59

Is this based on the suranne jones drama from years ago, where she went down for killing 2 policemen sent to evict them?

jewel1968 · 12/12/2021 20:58

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unforgiven_(TV_series) I believe so

PaulRuddsWife · 12/12/2021 22:32

I watched it. Saw the twist coming a mile off, tbh and thought it was a bit daft but watchable.

My main takeaway was that I'm happy prisoners in the US have access to such good skincare and possible fillers and facelifts. No amount of scraggy hair and brushing it over your face could make SB look like she'd just done 20 years inside.

Cheeseandlobster · 13/12/2021 21:25

I don't get why she took the blame. Surely 5 is below the age of culpability? I did enjoy it though

CovidCorvid · 13/12/2021 21:51

I don’t know either. Because when she took the blame it was way too early to realise the kid was traumatised and didn’t remember it. And if you loved your little sister so much you’d do anything to stay with her and help her…..not go to prison for something you didn’t do.

GoodTid · 13/12/2021 22:02

I thought it was okay, DP really enjoyed it.

Good acting

BaconAndAvocado · 14/12/2021 09:02

Enjoyed it.
SB was great as usual.

Enjoyed seeing the young actress from The Fall playing Katie, and John Boy has aged so well, he’s 70 😳

MojoJojo71 · 14/12/2021 22:04

I loved it. I thought Sandra Bullock was great in it, she made me cry several times and I cried buckets at the end.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/12/2021 00:25

I thought it was a load of crap, the kid was 5,she didn't need to take responsibility for it Confused

Seaoftroubles · 16/12/2021 00:28

I enjoyed it too, Sandra B was very watchable, as always, although as a previous poster mentioned l couldn't help marvelling at her lovely unlined face after a 20 year stint inside. Also enjoyed watching Aisling Franciosi as Katie (from The Fall) she is a young actress with a great future ahead of her.

girlbaby85 · 16/12/2021 22:27

I agree! I just watched it with DP and found it so so rubbish. I just couldn't get into it at all and there's a lot of it that didn't make sense. I agree that the ending was rushed also, two hrs just to see them hug at the end ffs
sonsmum · 17/12/2021 12:32

well I loved this film. My DH not so much. The acting was brilliant, and one of the best scenes was when the lawyers wife shouted at Ruth that she isn't a victim, when she tried to find him at the house to advise on the visit with Katie.
The story was so sad. How many of us judged Ruth initially, she's a murderer, cop killer, she doesn't deserve to be happy etc. Yet she had suffered so much trauma unnecessarily. She had tried to do the right thing and paid a terrible price. I hadn't seen the twist, but when it arrived, the amount of empathy I felt for Ruth was unreal!
I didn't want the film to end, so to some extent the ending may have seemed a bit rushed to some, but essentially the ending was clear, that the sisters were reunited and were likely to have a relationship (the adopted parents will be indebted, as Ruth had effectively saved their daughter, who had got herself into the mess by playing truant. Plus the wife did seem to show some empathy at that meeting they had)
I think it is eye opening to how difficult it is for convicts to re-engage with society when their first taste of freedom is that example of a half way house.
Also, Ruth was right: life goes on. You can't treat hate with hate. She had served her time, but so many odds were against her.
I thought the film was very thought provoking, which is the kind of film I like!
The biggest surprise to me is that SB is 57!!

CharlotteRose90 · 17/12/2021 12:59

Oh gosh I must be the only one to think it was crap. You could see the plot twist a mile away. I think they messed up the ending Aswell.

kylesmybaby · 28/12/2021 03:51

Been waiting for this thank you. 😁
