I've just started Working Moms - I'm not sure

I've just started this and can't decide what I think. It's funny and clever in many ways, but I also find it harder to relate to then Motherland, for example. Also the main characters are pretty unrealistic and quite selfish and unlikeable! I sort of get Kate and really feel for her, but she's also really selfish. I like Frankie and for some reason like Jenny! Even though Jenny is ridiculous. I'm in two minds.

Does it get any better?

I watched a few but was also in two minds. I can see why it’s good. But it was just watching all the worst bits of being a working mum myself, which just made me feel worse about it! Plus, I just couldn’t get past how strange the main character’s lips are

Allsorts1 · 22/11/2021 22:08

I loved it! It does get better, I think season 2 was the peak

TippledPink · 22/11/2021 22:08

I liked the first series but it went downhill from there on. If you don't like the first series I wouldn't even bother watching anymore!

SirensofTitan · 22/11/2021 22:09

I enjoyed it but not because I related in any way to any of the characters, if they are a realistic portrayal of Canadians mums I wish I'd brought my children up there Smile

I don't think it's really a case of whether it gets better more of whether it's your cup of tea, I really don't think it's going to be for everyone.

I may not be the right person to ask though as I didn't find a single character in Motherland remotely like any one I've ever met in all my years of child raising Grin

User65412 · 22/11/2021 22:10

How far in are you? Its definately not as relatable as motherland but the whole context is completely different - I can in no way relate to American (Canadian?) psychologists and PR executives! It's not really about the daily grind in the same way IYKWIM.
I enjoyed it quite a bit, though! I particularly like Anne.

desperatehousewife21 · 23/11/2021 16:45

I love Anne she’s my fav character, I’ve watched all episodes and so like it but more because it’s very easy watching. Thought the most recent series was the weakest though. I liked series 1 the most.

MindyStClaire · 23/11/2021 16:47

I enjoy it. It's not the best thing on TV or anything, but it's enjoyable. Love Anne.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 23/11/2021 17:04

I didn’t find either show particularly relatable, tbh, but enjoyed both of them.

WakeUpLockie · 23/11/2021 17:07

I felt the same at first but have watched it all so 🤷🏻‍♀️😄 it is almost the exact same as The Let Down so once you’ve finished working moms you can veg out to that too 😄

RoyKentsHairyBack · 23/11/2021 18:51

I think Anne is the one with the amazing clothes isn't she?

I liked it but didn't love it. Watched maybe 2 seasons but got bored I think.

I found some of the scenes really off. There was one about breastfeeding that seemed to sexualise it and the 12 year old daughter was as well. She was flashing her knickers or something at school. Really felt that a line was being crossed.

SeasonFinale · 23/11/2021 18:59

Yes it does get better. Definitely stick with it.

Yeah I remember this. It was trying to be a bit outrageous but I didn't really find it funny. As an actual mum it would be nice to have something funny but not feeding into awful stereotypes that women have had to fight back on. I know it's supposed to support the 'working mum' but it did feel a bit anti breastfeeding, cosleeping and all that.

I sympathised with some of the characters at times but then they are completely and awfully selfish and unrealistic!

Having sex in front of am awake baby with a blanket thrown over their head 🤔 they would definitely cry!

Yeah a lot of it was really distasteful. I think because it was written by real life Kate it was supposed to be ‘by women for women’ but it was really hackneyed a lot of the time. Saying that I have watched them all and I did like the lifestyle it portrays but all the main characters were pretty horrific

Karwomannghia · 23/11/2021 19:50

I gave up on it after a couple but then gave it another go and got really into it! Think it takes a while to get over the unrealistic parts and just find it funny.

riotlady · 23/11/2021 20:06

Stick with it, it’s really funny

Mandarinsatsuma · 23/11/2021 20:15

Kate has literally no interest in spending time with her family! She's decided to go to Montreal for 3 months, leaving her husband basically a single dad and baby who she never sees as she's always choosing to stay behind at work to prove points. She then decides to go into work on her one week off as her sister is taking over at home. Whaaat? Does she have literally not interest in her baby? Mental 🤣 A man would be roasted for doing that!

Working women do love kids too! 🤦🏻‍♀️ I know the work culture is more like that over there, but it's hard to like her.

I bloody love it!

sleepyhoglet · 12/12/2021 19:19

You could try the letdown on Netflix. It's Australian but perhaps a bit too raw a comedy for me post birth!
