Came on here to see if anyone was watching the new series currently being shown on Gold. Six episodes this time, instead of the previous three, and every one an absolute joy. Superb acting, brilliant script and stunning Isle of Wight locations.
Christmas Special to follow Smile

Yes, I binged them all as I've been stuck on the sofa, unwell.

Definitely missing Bobby Ball, he had a much lighter touch than Gregor Fisher and a twinkly charm that made you forgive the jarring comments.

Really loved Esther, she was adorable. I'm guessing the relationship with Donna ended badly. Also love David, he was on top form.

Sue's character was too annoying, not surprised Simon snapped at her.

Loved Nigel Havers, just superb whereas in S1 I thought he was miscast.

It really cheered me up.

Samcro · 12/11/2021 21:10

Not finished it yet. Miss BB, new guy is just obnoxious.

TamzinGrey · 13/11/2021 09:42

I really missed BB too. Gregor Fisher's Ray is just a deeply unpleasant character with no redeeming features at all.

Yay, I was about to start a thread on the Cockfields.
It is so well written, even though Sue is annoying, the Love between her and Simon is so touching. David is so sweet, I hope he finds love soon..
Great to see David Earl make an appearance with his co writer Joe Wilkinson.
The characters are amazingly believable and not over the top.

groundcontroltomontydon · 14/11/2021 10:03

Currently blubbing my was through series 2. It captures exactly the complex and dysfunctional nature - and Stockholm syndrome-ness - of family dynamics. (Larkin was so right!) GF is brilliant but his version of Ray is much darker than BB.

groundcontroltomontydon · 14/11/2021 10:53

Gregor Fisher's Ray is just a deeply unpleasant character with no redeeming features at all.
I thought this for the first couple of episodes but then he does that thing that's so common in families: he undermines people (moaning at David, rubbishing Simon's business plans) pushing them to their limit ... and then redeems himself (David's pre-date pep talk, getting a mate to talk to Simon about business loans) and all is forgiven.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 14/11/2021 20:01

Awww
I've just watched the last episode. Sue Johnstone reminds me of my mum a bit. She's nothing like the character of Sue or barbara royle but both characters make me think of her so when he was having a go at her about the lunch it actually made me cry Sad I actually love the brother too so much he's such a sweetheart! I hope he clicks with a lovely bridesmaid at the wedding Grin

LettertoHermoine · 14/11/2021 20:08

I love it, Sue's comment " I don't know how to stop being your Mum" choked me up. David's smile cheers me up and breaks my heart at the same time. Esther is beautiful.

EachandEveryone · 30/11/2021 23:59

Oh im up to the last one. I wish more people could watch it really its a shame its not on normal telly. I loved it when they danced to Humphrey Lyttelton. It deffo has a touch of the Royles to it.

Northernlass99 · 02/12/2021 12:09

Love this. Sue Johnsons character is EXACTLY like my mother. My sister and I keep texting each other the lines as they are taken directly from my mothers mouth. I even wondered if the writers had gone method and lived with my parents for six months without me noticing. I let my mum's waffle wash over me up to a point and then I loose my temper like Simon and then I feel bad. Its such an accurate portrayal of the love but also difficulties in a family. Absolutely brilliant.

Doubleraspberry · 14/12/2021 07:33

Just did a search to see whether anyone was talking about this. We have watched the first four episodes so far (after being big fans of the first series) and agree with so much of this thread. The writing is just superb and the characters are so well drawn. I’ve also wondered whether there’s a webcam in my in-laws’ house.

I think GF’s Ray definitely has moments of trying, in amongst the bluster. It’s shades of grey with all the characters.

I wish it had a bigger audience.

JSL52 · 15/12/2021 16:14

Loved it. Missed BB also Donna- no explanation why they split.

Motherofchickens1 · 15/12/2021 22:32

I LOVE this. I swear to god its as though the scriptwriters have followed my dad and step mum around as they wrote it. There are so many little details that are hilarious. Agree that Bobby Ball is a miss though.

baggies · 15/12/2021 23:02

Just watched the Christmas special. Tears in my eyes at the end.
Both series have been a joy to watch.

jendifer · 15/12/2021 23:05

Yeah I love it, didn’t know there was a Christmas special. I’m from the island so massively enjoyed showing DH some of the locations. It’s really sweet and reminded me of The Dectectorists.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/12/2021 00:22

I binged this a while back, absolutely loved it. Lived on the island so it was lovely to see familiar places.

Thunderpunt · 16/12/2021 15:40

Oh the Christmas one was just so lovely too......

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/12/2021 13:16

The Christmas one? Was that a special? I can only find series 1 and 2.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/12/2021 13:18

Oh found it! It's on tonight, that's my evening sorted Smile

TamzinGrey · 17/12/2021 20:40

Oh dear- am I the only one who found the Christmas special disappointing then? Everything was so repetitive and predictable, and I really missed the stunning IOW scenery that we had on previous episodes.

OP posts:
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/12/2021 23:53

It wasn't as good as previous ones but I bawled my eyes out when Simon said he'd stay a few days. I've had a really hard week Blush

TamzinGrey · 18/12/2021 17:52

Maybe I should watch it again then. It was lovely when Simon said that they'd stay on, and his mum's reaction, but wasn't that something to do with the phonecall he got in the pub? I'd assumed that the only reason they were staying on was because his job had fallen through.

It was because of the conversation he had with his school friend about him losing his mum.
TamzinGrey · 18/12/2021 18:23

Yes - you're probably right, so that was a lovely decision, but what was that phone cal that upset him in the pub about?

OP posts:
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/12/2021 22:26

He wasn't upset about it ,it was just extra work and he's not good at managing his work/home life balance. After speaking to his friend he realised the work would get done when he got back but family was priority.
