I remember growing up and seeing unpleasant shows on CBBC and CITV during the 80s and 90s that looking back were pretty heavy going, especially for kids.

Ones I remember we're children's ward. Especially when the girl (who ended up playing Maria in coronation Street) died.
Also this one called Dramarama with one off stories. I remember this particular episode about a boy who steals a rabbit and his dad thrashes him with a belt.
And this drama called the secret set partly in Eastbourne where these kids mum goes missing.

Raggerty in Rupert the Bear 70s style was terrifying

ipswichwitch · 06/10/2021 14:04

I remember those public information films were got shown in school.
The worst for us was one I think called 10 little Indians, where a group of 10 kids all had horrific accidents in farms. Particularly scary for us because I went to a very rural school and 70% of us would have been involved in farming to some degree! Bloody nightmares about the boy drowning in the slurry pit for ages after!

bookworm14 · 06/10/2021 14:06

Oh god, the public information films. The one about electricity substations haunts me to this day.

Bingopants · 06/10/2021 14:11

Watched a tv production of David Copperfield in the 70s and there was a very frightening scene where David was caned.

I remember another programme that featured a house fire and the police were collecting human bones, from the ashes, for identification. Horrifying.

Bingopants · 06/10/2021 14:12

And The Singing Ringing Tree - I loved it but it was creepy.

Obsidiansphere · 06/10/2021 14:12

Oh yes the public information films 😱 I had nightmares about those, especially the drowning ones 😬

snowballer · 06/10/2021 14:20
@DeadButDelicious - Through the Dragon’s Eye haunts my nightmares even now. Charn was next level scary. I’ll never forget the scarf with ‘Help, Charn!’ written on it. Shudder!
God yes - I'd forgotten about this completely until this thread and googling pictures brought out goosebumps

LaetitiaASD · 06/10/2021 14:24

Not sure it truly freaked me out, but I recall something in the 80s... I recall a detached house with a big lawn at the front... for some reason someone had removed all of the labels from the tinned food in the larder, and every meal time the husband wife and kids would have the rather unpleasant experience of having to open cans at random and try to make a meal out of it.

TheVolturi · 06/10/2021 14:34

Not sure if it's been mentioned but Grotbags terrified me, as did Worzel Gummidge!

furbabymama87 · 06/10/2021 14:39

The Riddlers. Ugly, creepy puppet things.

Whatsitbeen · 06/10/2021 14:40

Tottie was very dark, I did love it though.

Watership down was the most terrifying but I loved that too. My brother was petrified of Dr Who but insisted on watching it anyway!

I think some of those public information adverts should be brought back to be honest. They were disturbing but very effective!

Whatsitbeen · 06/10/2021 14:42

Moon and me is the most disturbing of modern days. Collywobble is so creepy!

JorisBonson · 06/10/2021 14:42

Knightmare, when they'd wander off into the sunset and leave their mate trapped in one of those weird rooms.

JorisBonson · 06/10/2021 14:43

And the one where the girl picked up the wrong end of the sparkler!!
AnOnly · 06/10/2021 14:47

Can anyone remember a programme from the 70s or 80s where the boy was in a block of flats and the lift went down and down past the basement and there was something scary down there?

Also, what was the programme with a young boy and it had a small spinning pyramid that hovered next to him, something to do with outer space maybe? Both British programmes.

FadedRed · 06/10/2021 14:54

The Public Information films - shudder!
Anything narrated by Patrick Allan or Michael Buerk gives a cold shiver down my back.
As previously mentioned
‘Tripods’ was scary, and frustrating as the third series (presumably where humanity successfully overcame the rule of the Tripods) was never made.
Anyone else remember ‘The Children of the Stones?”
Happy Day…

I don't think it was aimed at kids but my grandparents used to let me watch strange but true it terrified me I'd hardly sleep a wink and I'd have the covers over my head all night! Also I know they are films but coraline and nightmare before Christmas spooked me, grizzly tales for gruesome kids creeped me out too.
Shock Yes, to Strange But True. I used to beg to be allowed to watch it even though I was shit scared by most of it. I had (and still have) really vivid dreams and awful night terrors - Strange But True always guaranteed a nightmare, which meant a blood-curdling scream to wake the whole house. No idea why my parents let me watch it Grin
JustDanceAddict · 06/10/2021 15:26

My ds was scared of the Numbertaker on Numberjacks (c. 2006). They basically styled the character as an undertaker!!
I don’t really remember being scared of children’s TV as a kid. Loved Children’s Ward and Dramarama. The only prog that I remember as being frightening was Dr Who.

JustDanceAddict · 06/10/2021 15:27

Although was def scared of adult progs like Sapphire and Steel!!

MrsBerthaRochester · 06/10/2021 15:54

Worzel gummige! I found him creepy and Aunt Sally terrifying. Windmill! Rod hull again creepy and Grotbags reminded me of wicked witch from Oz who still gives me nightmares!

FancyFlipFlops · 06/10/2021 16:02

Sapphire and Steel was not an adult programme it was for kids.

I was a weird child I loved watching these sorts of programmes and reading scary books as well. Any one remember a comic called Misty?

woodhill · 06/10/2021 16:05

I think S&S was for both and it was definitely scary

A dramarama episode where a girls reflection was different to her. She was stuck in the mirror - that was scary.

Watching Thundercats very first episode - I remember seeing Mumra- and then having a nightmare about him that night.

My mum would also let me watch Tales of The Inexpected with her and they were creepy. Not meant for kids though - thanks mum!
